Inleiding
HERENHUIS "Villa Emma" uit 1905 is tegelijkertijd gebouwd met het naastgelegen pand Nieuwlandersingel 55, naar ontwerp van de architect E. Kalverboer. Het pand maakt onderdeel uit van het complex "Nieuwlandersingel" langs de Singelgracht tegenover het Kennemerpark in Alkmaar.
Omschrijving
Het herenhuis heeft een langwerpige rechthoekige plattegrond en telt boven een souterrain twee bouwlagen en een zolder onder afgeknot schilddak met gesmoorde kruispannen. De voorgevel is boven het gepleisterde souterrain op decoratieve wijze opgetrokken in rode en gele verblendsteen, de achtergevel is wit gesausd. De schuifvensters zijn grotendeels voorzien van een vertikale roedenverdeling in de bovenlichten en gekleurd glas-in-lood in Art Nouveautrant. Boven de vensters aan de onderzijde getoogde strekken van gele verblendsteen met aanzetstukken van grijze (kunst)steen. De voorgevel telt drie vensterassen waarvan de de brede middelste in een verhoogde gevelpartij met recht gesloten geveltop waarop oorspronkelijke een puntgevel was aangebracht. Op de verdieping een dubbele glasdeur met rondboogvormige ramen en een bovenlicht onder natuurstenen latei naar een houten balkon op consoles. Het rondboogvormige zoldervenster in de geveltop is drieledig. De middelste vensteras wordt geaccentueerd door een gemetselde rondboog van gele strengperssteen. In de afgesnoten linker vensteras twee schuifvensters boven elkaar en in de rechter vensteras op de bel etage de entree. Een trap van 6 treden leidt naar de oorspronkelijke paneeldeur in Art Nouveautrant onder drieruits bovenlicht. Daarboven een verdiepingsvenster met openslaande ramen onder een bovenlicht en in het dakschild een kleine dakkapel onder zadeldakje. Aan de achterzijde is de bel etage iets uitgebouwd en bevat links een eenvoudige glasdeur met zijlicht en rechts een groot venster. Op de verdieping een balkon over de hele breedte van de gevel met rechts openslaande glasdeuren onder vijfruits bovenlicht en links een schuifvenster.
INTERIEUR. Het interieur uit de bouwtijd is grotendeels bewaard gebleven met onder meer de oorspronkelijke plattegrondindeling, tochtpui en trap, paneeldeuren en ornamentstucplafonds, schouwen en glas-in-loodramen in Art Nouveau trant.
Waardering
Het herenhuis "Villa Emma" uit 1905 is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als grotendeels gave representant van de Art Nouveaustijl, zowel uit- als inwendig, uit het oeuvre van de architect Kalverboer. Het huis heeft situationele waarde als onderdeel van het complex "Nieuwlandersingel" dat zeer beeldbepalend is gesitueerd langs de zuidrand van de Singelgracht tegenover het Kennemerpark.

Description
The mansion has an elongated rectangular floor plan and comprises two storeys above the basement and an attic under a half-hipped roof with hipped crossed tiles. The front facade above the plastered basement is built in a decorative manner in red and yellow facing brick, the rear facade is whitewashed. The sash windows are largely provided with a vertical glazing bar division in the fanlights and coloured leaded glass in Art Nouveau style. Above the windows at the lower part round-arched stretches of yellow facing brick with connection pieces of grey (artificial) stone. The front facade has three window bays of which the broad middle one is in a raised gable section with straight closed gable top on which originally a pointed gable was attached. On the storey a double glass door with round-arched sashes and a fanlight under natural stone lintel to a wooden balcony on consoles. The round-arched dormer window in the gable top is three-part. The middle window bay is accentuated by a masonry round arch of yellow pressed brick. In the blocked-off left window bay two sash windows above each other and in the right window bay on the piano nobile the entrance. A flight of 6 steps leads to the original panelled door in Art Nouveau style under three-pane fanlight. Above it a storey window with opening sashes under a fanlight and in the roof panel a small roof dormer under a small gabled roof. On the rear side the piano nobile is slightly extended and contains to the left a simple glass door with side light and to the right a large window. On the storey a balcony along the entire width of the facade with to the right opening glass doors under five-pane fanlight and to the left a sash window.
INTERIOR. The interior from the period of construction has been largely preserved with among others the original floor plan layout, draught lobby and staircase, panelled doors and ornamental stucco ceilings, fireplaces and leaded glass windows in Art Nouveau style.
Valuation
The mansion "Villa Emma" from 1905 is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as a largely intact representative of the Art Nouveau style, both exterior and interior, from the oeuvre of architect Kalverboer.
