Inleiding
HERENHUIS "Schoonzicht" in Art Nouveaustijl uit 1907, tegelijkertijd gebouwd met het naastgelegen pand Hofdijkstraat 2, naar ontwerp van de architect E. Kalverboer. Het pand maakt onderdeel uit van het complex "Nieuwlandersingel" langs de Singelgracht tegenover het Kennemerpark in Alkmaar.
Omschrijving
Het herenhuis heeft een langwerpige rechthoekige plattegrond en telt boven het souterrain twee bouwlagen en een zolderverdieping onder een afgeknot schilddak met aan de voorzijde rode tuiles du Nord en aan de achterzijde gesmoorde pannen. De voorgevel is opgetrokken in gele verblendsteen, de achtergevel in bruine baksteen. De schuifvensters onder lateien van grijze (kunst)steen zijn deels nog voorzien van de oorspronkelijke kleine roedenverdeling in de bovenlichten.
De voorgevel telt drie vensterassen, waarvan de middelste is verhoogd tot een recht gesloten topgevel met hoeklisenen die worden bekroond natuurstenen blokken. In de middelste vensteras op de verdieping openslaande deuren naar een klein balkon met gemetselde balustrade op consoles. In de geveltop een zoldervenster met kleine roedenverdeling in het bovenlicht. De linker vensteras bevindt zich in een afgesnoten geveldeel. De rechter vensteras bevat op de bel etage de verdiepte entree in getoogd portiek. Een trap van 6 treden leidt naar de oorspronkelijke paneeldeur in Art Nouveau trant. Boven de portiek een gevelsteen met de naam en op de verdieping een venster met openslaande ramen en kleine roedenverdeling in het bovenlicht. Rechts van de topgevel een later toegevoegde grote dakkapel. In de achtergevel op de bel etage een dubbele glasdeur met zij- en bovenlichten en links een eenvoudige glasdeur en venster. Op de verdieping rechts een openslaande deur naar balkon en daarboven een zoldervenster. Links boven elkaar twee rondboogvormige traplichten.
Waardering
Het herenhuis "Schoonzicht" uit 1907 is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als grotendeels gave representant van de Art Nouveaustijl, zowel uit- als inwendig, uit het oeuvre van de architect Kalverboer. Het huis heeft tevens situationele waarde als onderdeel van het complex "Nieuwlandersingel" dat zeer beeldbepalend is gesitueerd langs de zuidrand van de Singelgracht tegenover het Kennemerpark.

The mansion has an elongated rectangular floor plan and comprises two storeys above the basement and an attic storey under a half-hipped roof with red tuiles du Nord on the front elevation and hipped tiles on the rear elevation. The front facade is built in yellow facing brick, the rear facade in brown brick. The sash windows with grey (artificial) stone lintels are partly still provided with the original small glazing bars in the fanlights.
The front facade has three window bays, of which the middle one is raised to a straight closed gable with corner mouldings crowned with stone blocks. On the storey in the middle window bay, opening doors to a small balcony with masonry balustrade on consoles. In the gable top a dormer window with small glazing bars in the fanlight. The left window bay is situated in a blocked-off gable section. The right window bay contains on the piano nobile the recessed entrance in a round-arched portico. A flight of 6 steps leads to the original panelled door in Art Nouveau style. Above the portico a facade stone with the name and on the storey a window with opening sashes and small glazing bars in the fanlight. To the right of the gable top a later-added large roof dormer. In the rear elevation on the piano nobile a double glass door with side and fanlights and to the left a simple glass door and window. On the storey to the right an opening door to balcony and above it a dormer window. To the left above each other two round-arched stairwell lights.
Valuation
The mansion "Schoonzicht" from 1907 is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as a largely intact representative of the Art Nouveau style, both exterior and interior, from the oeuvre of architect Kalverboer. The house also has situational value as part of the complex "Nieuwlandersingel" which is very visually prominent situated along the southern edge of the Singelgracht opposite Kennemerpark.
