Inleiding
Meest noordelijke SMALSPOORVIADUCT annex TUNNEL, onderlangs gekruist door een vrijwel kaarsrecht ACCESPAD, dat nagenoeg bij de weg Egypte uitkomt. Over het viaduct liep oorspronkelijk het eigen smalspoor van kleiwarenfabrikant Alfred Russel. Over het accespad liep een eigen smalspoortramlijn van de kleiwarenfabrikant Gebroeders Teeuwen, die via het tunneltje het spoor van Russel kruiste. Het object dateert uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw. Het werd waarschijnlijk gebouwd in opdracht van de Gebroeders Teeuwen, mogelijk in samenspraak met Russel, en opgetrokken in Ambachtelijk-traditionele bouwtrant.
Omschrijving
Het SMALSPOORVIADUCT annex TUNNEL is opgetrokken in donkere baksteen en gemetseld in kruisverband. Centraal een verhoogde halfcirkelvormige tunnelopening. Toogboog van twee rollagen dik. De bovenranden zijn eveneens afgewerkt met rollagen. Plint van het tunnelgewelf gecementeerd. Diepgelegen, onderlangslopend ACCESPAD. Over het pad was indertijd eveneens een smalspoorlijn aangelegd. Aan weerszijden van het pad een vrij steil, kunstmatig afgegraven aarden talud.
Waardering
Het SMALSPOORVIADUCT annex TUNNEL met onderlangs kruisend ACCESPAD is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft grote cultuurhistorische waarden. Het is van belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van de sociaal-economische ontwikkelingen in de Noord-Limburgse grofkeramische industrie in het begin van de twintigste eeuw, waarvan Tegelen het centrum was. Vanwege het belang dat door deze industrie aan de grondstoffenvoorziening -en daarmee aan de transportmogelijkheden- werd gehecht is het object tevens van belang als uitdrukking van een landschappelijke ontwikkeling. Daarnaast is het object van belang vanwege het pionierskarakter. De aanleg van een smalspoornetwerk met alle bijbehorende artefacten was een innovatieve technische ontwikkeling die de eerste mechanisatie in de grofkeramische industrie illustreert. Het object bezit tesamen met de overige smalspoorviaducten ensemblewaarden vanwege de karakteristieke stedenbouwkundige situering tussen de voormalige, nabijgelegen kleigroeven en de kleiwarenfabrieken aan de Kaldenkerkerweg, die vooral in verband met de ontwikkelingen in de grofkeramische industrie aan het einde van de negentiende en het begin van de twintigste eeuw bebouwd raakte. Het object vertegenwoordigt een grote industrieel-archeologische en typologische zeldzaamheidswaarde. Most northerly NARROW-GAUGE VIADUCT and TUNNEL, crossed underneath by a virtually straight ACCESS PATH, which emerges almost at the road Egypte. Originally, the narrow-gauge track of ceramic ware manufacturer Alfred Russel ran over the viaduct. Over the access path ran a narrow-gauge tramline belonging to ceramic ware manufacturer Gebroeders Teeuwen, which crossed Russel's track via the small tunnel. The object dates from the early twentieth century. It was probably built on the orders of Gebroeders Teeuwen, possibly in consultation with Russel, and constructed in a traditional craft-like manner.
Description
The NARROW-GAUGE VIADUCT and TUNNEL is constructed in dark brick and laid in header bond. Centrally, a raised semicircular tunnel opening. Segmental arch two roll mouldings thick. The top edges are likewise finished with roll mouldings. Plinth of the tunnel vault cemented. Deep-lying, underpassing ACCESS PATH. A narrow-gauge line was likewise laid over the path at that time. On either side of the path, a fairly steep, artificially cut earthen slope.
Valuation
The NARROW-GAUGE VIADUCT and TUNNEL with the ACCESS PATH crossing underneath is of general importance. The object has great cultural-historical values. It is important as a distinctive expression of the socio-economic developments in the North Limburgian coarse ceramic industry in the early twentieth century, of which Tegelen was the centre. Given the importance attached by this industry to the supply of raw materials – and thereby to transport possibilities – the object is also important as an expression of a landscape development. In addition, the object is important because of its pioneering character. The construction of a narrow-gauge network with all its associated artefacts was an innovative technical development that illustrates the first mechanisation in the coarse ceramic industry. The object possesses, together with the other narrow-gauge viaducts, ensemble values because of the characteristic urban planning setting between the former, nearby clay pits and the ceramic ware factories on the Kaldenkerkerweg, which especially in connection with developments in the coarse ceramic industry became built-up at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. The object represents a great industrial-archaeological and typological rarity value. It forms part of the only example of narrow-gauge viaducts/tunnels in the Netherlands preserved as a complex ensemble.
