Inleiding
Meest zuidelijk gelegen SMALSPOORVIADUCT annex TUNNEL, onderlangs gekruist door een vrijwel haaks erop gesitueerd, onverhard ACCESPAD. Over het viaduct liep oorspronkelijk het eigen smalspoor van kleiwarenfabrikant Alfred Russel. Over het vrij rechte accespad voerden aanvankelijk diverse andere plaatselijke pannenbakkers hun klei af per kar. Het viaduct dateert in de kern uit het begin van de jaren twintig van de twintigste eeuw. Het werd gebouwd in opdracht van Alfred Russel, waarschijnlijk ter vervanging van een ouder viaductje, en opgetrokken in Ambachtelijk-traditionele bouwtrant. Het object verkeert in slechte staat. Vooral de westzijde van het viaduct is hersteld met in stijl afwijkende substituten, zoals een brugdekligger in beton en een bovenrand in natuursteen.
Omschrijving
Het SMALSPOORVIADUCT annex TUNNEL is opgetrokken in rode baksteen en gemetseld in kruisverband. Centraal een nagenoeg halfcirkelvormige tunnelopening. Eensteens toogboog, geaccentueerd door een bakstenen koordboog. Tunnelgewelf inwendig meervoudig versneden. Aan de oostzijde boven de boog het restant van een met bakstenen omkaderd casement waaruit de jaartalaanduiding thans is verdwenen. De bovenrand is afgewerkt met een rollaag voorzien van afgeronde einden. Aan weerszijden van de boog twee forse haakse steunberen, eveneens afgewerkt met een afgeronde rollaag.
Waardering
Het SMALSPOORVIADUCT annex TUNNEL met onderlangs kruisend ACCESPAD is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft grote cultuurhistorische waarden. Het is van belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van de sociaal-economische ontwikkelingen in de Noord-Limburgse grofkeramische industrie in het begin van de twintigste eeuw, waarvan Tegelen het centrum was. Vanwege het belang dat door deze industrie aan de grondstoffenvoorziening -en daarmee aan de transportmogelijkheden- werd gehecht is het object tevens van belang als uitdrukking van een landschappelijke ontwikkeling. Daarnaast is het object van belang vanwege het pionierskarakter. De aanleg van een smalspoornetwerk met alle bijbehorende artefacten was een innovatieve technische ontwikkeling die de eerste mechanisatie in de grofkeramische industrie illustreert. Het object bezit tesamen met de overige smalspoorviaducten ensemblewaarden vanwege de karakteristieke stedenbouwkundige situering tussen de voormalige, nabijgelegen kleigroeven en de kleiwarenfabrieken aan de Kaldenkerkerweg, die vooral in verband met de ontwikkelingen in de grofkeramische industrie aan het einde van de negentiende en het begin van de twintigste eeuw bebouwd raakte. Het object vertegenwoordigt een grote industrieel-archeologische en typologische zeldzaamheidswaarde. Het maakt onderdeel uit van het enige in complexvorm bewaard gebleven voorbeeld van smalspoorviaducten/tunnels in Nederland.

Introduction
Most southerly NARROW-GAUGE VIADUCT and TUNNEL, crossed underneath by an access path situated almost at right angles to it, unmetalled. Originally, the narrow-gauge track of ceramic ware manufacturer Alfred Russel ran over the viaduct. Initially, various other local tile makers transported their clay by cart over the fairly straight access path. The viaduct dates in its core to the early 1920s. It was built on the orders of Alfred Russel, probably to replace an older small viaduct, and constructed in a traditional craft-like manner. The object is in poor condition. Particularly the west side of the viaduct has been repaired with substitutes that deviate in style, such as a concrete bridge deck beam and a top edge in natural stone.
Description
The NARROW-GAUGE VIADUCT and TUNNEL is constructed in red brick and laid in header bond. Centrally, an almost semicircular tunnel opening. Single-brick segmental arch, accentuated by a brick voussoir arch. Tunnel vault internally multiply splayed. On the east side above the arch, the remnant of a casement framed in brick, from which the date inscription has now disappeared. The top edge is finished with a roll moulding with rounded ends. On either side of the arch, two substantial right-angled buttresses, likewise finished with a rounded roll moulding.
Valuation
The NARROW-GAUGE VIADUCT and TUNNEL with the ACCESS PATH crossing underneath is of general importance. The object has great cultural-historical values. It is important as a distinctive expression of the socio-economic developments in the North Limburgian coarse ceramic industry in the early twentieth century, of which Tegelen was the centre. Given the importance attached by this industry to the supply of raw materials – and thereby to transport possibilities – the object is also important as an expression of a landscape development. In addition, the object is important because of its pioneering character. The construction of a narrow-gauge network with all its associated artefacts was an innovative technical development that illustrates the first mechanisation in the coarse ceramic industry. The object possesses, together with the other narrow-gauge viaducts, ensemble values because of the characteristic urban planning setting between the former, nearby clay pits and the ceramic ware factories on the Kaldenkerkerweg, which especially in connection with developments in the coarse ceramic industry became built-up at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. The object represents a great industrial-archaeological and typological rarity value. It forms part of the only example of narrow-gauge viaducts/tunnels in the Netherlands preserved as a complex ensemble.
