Inleiding

Description
Introduction
In the Broek neighbourhood, north of the old village centre of Tegelen, right next to the level crossing of the Nijmegen - Roermond railway line, lies a NARROW-GAUGE TUNNEL that runs beneath the railway line. In line with the western tunnel shaft lies a retaining wall. A narrow-gauge railway ran through the tunnel for the transport of excavated clay to the clay works.
The simple tunnel was built in the nineteen-twenties of the twentieth century at the behest of 'N.V. Canoy-Herfkens Steenfabrieken' and is constructed in a businesslike and functional style with elements of Functionalism.
The tunnel is now partially filled in. The narrow-gauge railway itself has been removed.
Canoy-Herfkens received permission as early as 1893, one of the first pottery clay works manufacturers in Tegelen, for the construction of a narrow-gauge railway across municipal land. Via the narrow-gauge railway, pottery clay was transported from a clay pit of Canoy-Herfkens in the nearby hamlet of Egypte to the now largely demolished brick factory 'De Drie Kronen', situated between the Venloseweg and the Meuse. Since the (then) State Railway had to be crossed, initially only animal traction was permitted. By constructing a tunnel beneath the railway line, this problem could be overcome and a locomotive could be employed.
The issue of raw material transport led to the first mechanisation in Tegelen's coarse ceramics industry. For this purpose, an extensive network of narrow-gauge railway connections was constructed between the clay pits and the factories, initially largely for shared use. This narrow-gauge railway has been of very great significance for the development of the ceramics industry in the period from 1900 until shortly after the Second World War. It was available in track gauges of 600, 700 and 900 mm.
Raw material supply was one of the most important matters that the management of ceramic enterprises concerned themselves with. Enterprises that did not recognise this necessity in good time or were not capable of making adequate provision for it were ultimately forced to cease production.
Initially, clay extraction largely took place collectively from municipal lands; from the nineteen-thirties onwards, one sought clay pits and extraction sites outside Tegelen for raw material supply.
Description
Concrete, cast in situ NARROW-GAUGE TUNNEL, consisting of two elongated, square tunnel shafts on either side of the Nijmegen - Roermond railway line.
For separation from the parallel road Egypte-Vrijenbroekweg, a concrete retaining wall has also been constructed in line with the western tunnel opening.
Due to the raised level of the terrain on the east side of the railway, the tunnel shaft on this side has largely disappeared below ground level. Still visible are part of the shaft head and the tunnel deck.
Valuation
The NARROW-GAUGE TUNNEL with retaining wall is of general interest.
The object possesses great cultural-historical values. It is significant as a distinctive expression of the socio-economic developments in the North Limburg coarse ceramics industry in the early twentieth century, of which Tegelen was the centre. Due to the importance that this industry attached to raw material supply - and thereby to transport possibilities - the object is also of significance as an expression of a landscape development. Furthermore, the object is of significance due to its pioneering character. The construction of a narrow-gauge railway with all associated artefacts was an innovative technical development that illustrates the first mechanisation in the coarse ceramics industry.
The object possesses ensemble values due to the characteristic urban planning situation between the former, nearby clay pit in the hamlet of Egypte and the former factory complex of Canoy-Herfkens on the Venloseweg.
The object possesses great rarity value. The present object is in the given context a typological unique example that does not occur elsewhere in the Netherlands outside Tegelen.
