Introduction to complex component 1

The principal component of the complex Beikenhage is the VILLA which architects Meijers and Molema (The Hague) designed in 1913 for client W. Kreukniet, built in an architectural style related to English Country House Style. In 1917 the house was remodeled by architects Wouters and Brandes.

To the right behind the villa (north) stands an associated servant's dwelling (Pauwlaan 1). The house with associated servant's dwelling and garden layout is situated on the grounds of the country estate Backershagen.

N.B. A glazed extension has been added to the left side facade (southwest). The entrance has been modernised.

Of the garden layout, remains have particularly been preserved around the house in the form of retaining walls of the terraces. The retaining walls are built in red brickwork and furnished with plastered balls.

Description

Villa consisting of basement, bel étage and upper floor beneath a half-hipped roof with blue glazed tuille-du-Nord tiles, overhanging gutters and wind braces with block dentil mouldings. Both on the front and rear facade a projection under a roof with flashed joint. Centrally on the ridge an octagonal lantern with bronze roof covering. Furthermore the roof silhouette is enlivened by a small turret against the rear facade, three roof gables under saddle roof dormers with two nine-paned windows and tall masoned projecting chimneys on the ridge ends and at the rear. The facades are roughly plastered above a high plinth of red brickwork. The columns, balustrades and mouldings above windows are executed in sandstone. In the gable tops and under some windows vertically plastered imitation timber-framing. In the facades composite casement windows with sandstone drip mouldings, glazing bars in the fanlights and panel shutters on both sides of the windows.

Centrally in the symmetrical front facade (southeast) a strongly projecting higher-built facade section, of which the largest part has a round convex bulge. On both sides of the projection a broad window area with a balcony with balustrade on Doric columns with entasis in front of it. The columns stand on parapets of red brickwork with sandstone coping. In the projection five-part windows under fanlights, with imitation timber-framing between the ground floor and first floor. On the second storey three recessed four-paned windows. In the gable top an oval oeil de boeuf. Both above and below the balconies double terrace doors with fanlights. Below the balconies with sidelights, above with shutters and glazing bars in the doors.

To the right of the left side facade (southwest) a small one-and-a-half-storey extension, beneath a half hipped roof. Furthermore mainly cross windows with shutters.

On the right in the rear facade (northwest) a projection, on the left a tower with convexly curved front facade beneath a lead-clad small cupola. At three heights in the tower across the entire width windows with vertical mullions. Between the two lowest windows imitation timber-framing. Above and below the windows mouldings. In the rear facade furthermore small irregularly placed windows and a stained-glass window of the staircase. Arched rolls above the windows in the plinth. At the height of the staircase a wooden door with spy-window, which opens onto a wooden platform with balustrade. A door also emerges from the projection onto this platform. In front of the right side facade (northeast) on the ground floor there is a canopy consisting of a hipped roof on short columns, which are supported on a high parapet. The design is the same as the support of the balconies in the front facade. Below the canopy in the facade a groined portal with sandstone voussoirs. To the left of the entrance a convex window beneath a half dome with slate in Rhenish bond. Furthermore mainly cross windows with shutters.

Of the INTERIOR the following have in particular been preserved: The hall spanning two storeys with panel doors and glazed doors with cut glass in glazing bars; oval windows at the top of the doors and oval fanlights; lambrequins with panels; a wooden stair with a handrail with carved balusters; a gallery with balustrade on keystones and wooden carved small columns; a ceiling with rounded corners; a stained-glass stair light from atelier Bogtman (Haarlem), which was designed by Hen Ames and depicts a man with the initials J.Z.-P.T.H.

Further in the house among others still fine brickwork round arches and groined openings, suite doors with cut glass such as the hall doors. In the central room on the ground floor a marble fireplace in the corner and a stucco ceiling with garlands and torches. Wooden panelling in the lantern and under the roof.

Valuation

The villa with associated interior elements from 1913 and terrace layout is of general importance owing to cultural-historical and architectural-historical significance as a design in the manner of English Country House Style, developed within the transformation of Wassenaar into a villa village.

In urban planning terms the villa is of general importance owing to its landmark location on the Rijksstraatweg and as a spatial component of the country estate Backershagen.

The exterior of the villa is virtually intact; of the interior some elements have been preserved.
