Inleiding

- als representatief voorbeeld van een landhuis uit het eerste kwart van de 20ste eeuw gebouwd in Traditionalistiche trant, geïnspireerd op de Hollandse 17de-eeuwse classicistische bouwkunst en de Engelse landhuisstijl;

Introduction

COUNTRY HOUSE 'De Pauwhof' was built in 1912 by the architect Jos Th.J. Cuypers (1861-1949) in Traditionalist style, inspired by Dutch 17th-century classical architecture and English country house style.

The building was internally converted into a hotel and residence for an artist, whereby the original floor plan layout was largely preserved. The existing roof dormers were probably enlarged, the kitchen at the rear was extended and the loggia on the upper storey was enclosed. Until 1993 the building functioned as such. The windows on the upper storey had lower shutters.

Description

White-rendered, partly cellar building with a rectangular, symmetrically arranged main volume, consisting of two storeys and attic storey under a hipped roof with red improved Dutch tiles. At the rear (northeast) there is a two-storey extension under a flat roof. The hipped roof has white-painted rendered chimneys with white-painted renderings at the ridge corners, between which is a small bell cast under a tent roof. On the southwest and northeast roof slopes three roof dormers with opening six-pane windows.

The facades are cornice-topped facades with a wooden gutter board gutter list. The single and combined window arrangements are predominantly cross windows with glazing bars. The southwest facade situated on the garden side has over its full width a masonry terrace with breastwork at the short sides and in the middle a flight of three steps. The symmetrically arranged front facade (southwest) has a slightly projecting central section with a door arrangement, surrounded by fluted pilasters and entablature. The door arrangement consists of double opening single-pane doors with fanlight. On either side are narrow sidelights with calf, consisting of six-pane lower and four-pane upper windows. On the upper storey windows with fixed vertical mullion and two opening four-pane windows.

The left side facade (northwest) has to the left of centre a yellow brick step with herringbone motif and with teak entrance door with mirrored arch. Calf in the form of mirrored arch with fanlight above in the form of a peacock. To the right of this a lamp in the form of a torch. To the right of this surrounded by white-washed brick roll course terracotta relief, representing a peacock.

The right side facade (southeast) has on the ground floor to the left an oriel window with bevelled sides.

The rear facade (northeast) has to the right a two-storey building with to the right of this a door.

In the INTERIOR the floor plan has been largely preserved.

Valuation

The COUNTRY HOUSE is of general importance due to architectural and cultural-historical value

- as a representative example of a country house from the first quarter of the 20th century built in Traditionalist style, inspired by Dutch 17th-century classical architecture and English country house style;

- as an example from the oeuvre of architect J.Th.J. Cuypers, who together with J. Stuyt devoted himself in the period 1900-1915 to the design of villas and country houses.

The complex is reasonably intact in main structure, material use and detailing, both externally and internally. The country house is of importance due to the spatial, functional and stylistic coherence with the associated garage.

The country house is of urban planning importance as part of one of the first villa developments, which took place at the beginning of the 20th century on the edges of existing country estates, whereby the structure and layout thereof were maintained as much as possible.
