Inleiding complexonderdeel 1

Introduction to complex component 1

RESIDENTIAL HOUSE of the country house type with integral garage, named 'Schouwenhoek' was built on commission of Amsterdam merchant Clemens J. Heinrich Berlage in 1928, after the earlier design from 1917-1918 had burned down.

The first design was made by The Hague architect J.J.(Co) Brandes (1885-1955), in collaboration with J.T. Wouters. Initially the house was intended as a summer house with bicycle shed and had a thatched roof, which however burned down in 1928. Co Brandes subsequently rebuilt it on commission of W.J. Hasekamp from Schiedam, whereby in particular the entrance section and the tower with staircase were retained. The bicycle shed was replaced by a garage and the roofs were covered with slate tiles.

The building style of the country house was influenced by English and German country house construction, but the facade treatment is expressionistic in the application of decorative ornamental brickwork and glazed relief tiles. The building style of the house is characteristic of the early work of Brandes who is especially known as a pioneer of the Nieuwe Haagse School architecture from the nineteen twenties.

N.B. In the period 1994-1998 a major renovation took place, in which a large number of the original interior details were lost and various windows were replaced. The roof covered with slate tiles was replaced with thatch.

Description

Detached residential house consisting of ground floor, roof and attic storey. On a complex floor plan with as a basis a staircase in the form of a tower-like building mass projecting above the roof line on a square floor plan, which is covered by a tent roof. Around this are grouped building masses with different roof heights and roof shapes, most with steep continuous curved roof sections; on the front, side and rear sides projecting gable ends with terracotta panels, provided with Indian motifs; on the front side this is the built-out entrance portico resting on decoratively embellished pillars open on two sides, which connects to the tower with the staircase. To the left of it a built-up wall with round-arched gateway, which connects to garage

The facades above the trash-stone frame composed of crackle hand-formed bricks are built up. The single and composite window sections have steel frames with inward opening windows, some provided with stained glass-in-lead.

In the INTERIOR of importance are among other things the staircase and the chimney.

Valuation

The country house 'Schouwenhoek' is of general importance because of cultural historical, architectural historical, urban planning and ensemble value:

-as an example of a richly decorated residential house in the style of English and German country house construction

-as an image-determining work from the oeuvre of architects J.J. Brandes and J.T. Wouters

-as an image-determining residential house located in the villa development of Wassenaar

-because of the mutual coherence with the other complex components
