Inleiding complexonderdeel 1
Hoofdonderdeel van het complex Nijenstede wordt gevormd door het WOONHUIS van het type landhuis, gebouwd in 1915 in opdracht van Ewald Behle naar tekeningen van de architectencombinatie J.T. Wouters en J.J. Brandes in een op de Engelse Landhuisstijl geïnspireerde bouwstijl.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaand tweelaags pand met een rechthoekige plattegrond vanaf een trasraam, afgesloten door een natuurstenen sierband, opgetrokken in rode baksteen (kettingverband). Het overstekende zadeldak met dwars- en steekkappen is gedekt met leien in Maasdekking. Boven de voor- en de achtergevel bevindt zich een hoge, vierkante uitgemetselde schoorsteen. De vensters van het pand zijn voorzien van een roedenverdeling en bezitten natuurstenen lekdorpels. Langs de onderdorpels van de vensters op de verdieping loopt een uitkragende deels natuurstenen, deels bakstenen sierband langs de gevels. De gevels zijn verder rijkelijk voorzien van siermetselwerk, bouwkeramiek en natuurstenen sierbanden. Voorgevel aan de straatzijde (west) met middenrisaliet waarin de entree geplaatst is. Deze bestaat uit een rondboogvormige teakhouten deur met ruitjes en traliewerk, omgeven door een natuurstenen omlijsting waarboven in een natuurstenen plaquette de naam van het pand "Nijenstede" in haut-reliëf gehakt is. De entree is bereikbaar via een bordestrap omgeven door een met siersmeedwerk ingevulde, natuurstenen balustrade. Rechts naast de entree een dubbel vierruits venster, op de verdieping een driedelige meerruits vensterpartij tussen penanten met siermetselwerk. Boven dit venster bevindt zich een dakkapel met een samengestelde vensterpartij. Links naast de entree een tweelaagse driezijdige uitbouw die deel uitmaakt van het risaliet. Op de begane grond zijn de vierruits vensters die in de drie zijden geplaatst zijn omgeven door een natuurstenen omlijsting die overgaat in de omlijsting van de deur. Op de verdieping zijn in de drie zijden negenruits vensters geplaatst. In het terugliggende bouwdeel rechts van het risaliet zijn op de begane grond twee vierruits vensters geplaatst, de verdieping bezit twee zesruits vensters met daartussen siermetselwerk. Het linker geveldeel volgt de rooilijn van het risaliet maar wijkt op de verdieping terug zodat een balkon ontstaat. Ter plaatse van de begane grond enkele en dubbele vierruits vensters, de verdieping bevat een meerruits dubbele balkondeur met aan weerszijden siermetselwerk.
De kopse gevel aan de rechter zijde (zuid) is een puntgevel met een zevenzijdige serre-achtige uitbouw voorzien van twaalfruits venster in de gevelzijden. De borstwering van het balkon dat op de verdieping van de uitbouw geplaatst is, is gedecoreerd met siermetselwerk, verticale natuurstenen banden en een natuurstenen afdekking. Het balkon is bereikbaar via een meerruits balkondeur, geflankeerd door siermetselwerk. In de top een driedelig meerruits venster, siermetselwerk, natuurstenen banden en een natuurstenen topinvulling. De achtergevel (oost) heeft een middenrisaliet dat als vleugels, geflankeerd wordt door eenlaagse uitbouwen. De balkons op deze beide bouwdelen, worden door middel van het balkon op de verdieping van het risaliet, met elkaar verbonden. Op beide verdiepingen zijn in het middenrisaliet drie meerruits vleugeldeuren geplaatst. Daarboven bevindt zich een dakkapel met een samengestelde vensterpartij. De linker vleugel heeft in de oostzijde een meerruits vensterpartij en in de beide zijgevels meerruits terrasdeuren die toegang geven tot het aan de oost- en de zuidzijde gelegen terras. De rechter vleugel is eveneens voorzien van een meerruits vensterpartij in de oostgevel, heeft een meerruits terrasdeur in de linker zijgevel en loopt rechts om de hoek naar de noordelijke zijgevel van het pand. Aan weerszijden van het risaliet voor de achtergevel zijn op de verdieping dubbele meerruits terrasdeuren geplaatst. Boven de gevel aan iedere zijde een dakkapel.
De kopse noordzijde is een puntgevel die deels schuil gaat achter de aanbouw van de achtergevel waarin een meerruits vensterpartij geplaatst is en een driezijdige erker met meerruits venters. Op de begane grond, rechts van de aanbouw is een meerruits venster geplaatst, op de verdieping twee zesruitsvensters en in de top een driedelig meerruits venster, siermetselwerk en natuurstenen elementen.
INTERIEUR De oorspronkelijke indeling is bewaard gebleven. Vermeldenswaard zijn onder meer de met marmer uitgelegde hal, de bewerkte schouwen, stucplafonds, de lambrisering met, in sommige vertrekken, daarin opgenomen kasten en de trap met een smeedijzeren, gebogen balustrade.
Waardering
Uit 1915 daterend landhuis Nijenstede, hoofdonderdeel van het gelijknamige complex is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde:
- als vroeg voorbeeld van een landhuis op de perceelsgewijs uitgegeven grond die als nieuw te stichten villapark van het voormalige landgoed "Oud Wassenaar"was afgekaveld.
- als voorbeeld van een landhuis gebouwd in een op de Engelse Landhuisstijl geïnspireerde bouwstijl. Daarnaast is het pand een voorbeeld uit het oeuvre van de architectencombinatie J.T. Wouters en C.C. Brandes die een groot deel van het ontwerpen van de nieuw te bouwen landhuizen in het villapark op zich namen.
Het pand is gaaf in hoofdvorm, materiaalgebruik en detaillering. Het interieur bevindt zich in de oorspronkelijke staat en bezit enkele bijzondere interieuronderdelen.

Detached two-storey building with a rectangular ground plan from a plinth course, enclosed by a natural stone decorative band, constructed in red brick (chain bond). The overhanging gabled roof with cross and corner purlines is covered with slate in Maas covering. Above the front and rear façade is a high, square rendered chimney. The windows of the building are provided with glazing bars and possess natural stone drip moulds. Along the undersills of the windows on the upper storey runs a projecting partly natural stone, partly brick decorative band along the façades. The façades are further richly provided with decorative brickwork, building ceramic and natural stone decorative bands. Front façade on the street side (west) with central risalit in which the entrance is placed. This consists of a round-arch-shaped teak wooden door with panes and trellis work, surrounded by a natural stone surround above which on a natural stone plaque the name of the building "Nijenstede" is carved in high relief. The entrance is accessed via a flight of steps surrounded by a natural stone balustrade filled with ornamental ironwork. The left wing has a multi-light window arrangement in the east side and in both side façades multi-light terrace doors providing access to the terrace located on the east and south side. The right wing is likewise provided with a multi-light window arrangement in the east façade, has a multi-light terrace door in the left side façade and runs around the corner to the northern side façade of the building. On either side of the risalit facing the rear façade are double multi-light terrace doors on the upper storey. Above the façade on each side a roof dormer.
The gable end on the north side is a pointed gable which is partly concealed behind the extension of the rear façade in which a multi-light window arrangement is placed and a three-sided bay window with multi-light windows. On the ground floor, to the right of the extension is a multi-light window placed, on the upper storey two six-light windows and at the top a tripartite multi-light window, decorative brickwork and natural stone elements.
INTERIOR The original layout has been preserved. Worthy of mention are among others the hall laid out in marble, the worked fireplaces, stucco ceilings, the wall panelling with, in some rooms, cabinets incorporated in it and the staircase with a curved wrought-iron balustrade.
