Inleiding complexonderdeel 1

Via vier traptreden komt men in de lagere gelegen tuin.

Introduction to complex component 1

The main component of the country estate Arcadia is formed by the RESIDENTIAL HOUSE of the country house type that was designed in 1917 on commission of Mrs N.C.H. Parqui-de Boer in a New Historicising style, which is inspired by Dutch Classicism with influence from English country house style. The country estate is situated in villa park Groot Haesebroek. In line with the then prevailing interest and fashion for furnishing period rooms, various spaces on the ground floor in particular have been furnished in Neo-style. The country house is centrally located on the site, to the southeast of the forecourt situated at the Schouwweg.

Description

Detached building mass on virtually rectangular plan, consisting of basement, two storeys and attic storey under a slightly flattened hipped roof, covered with dampened improved Dutch tiles and hip and ridge tiles at the location of the central projections and the extensions. Among other features, chimneys are present on all four ridge corners. Dormer windows under ridge tiles have a triangular pediment and double casement windows. In the middle of the roof slope the roof light of the staircase is visible.

The facades above the water moulding are of wall brick, built up in red wall brick with Flemish bond, with the doors and windows covered by stretches with sandstone setting and closing stones. Sandstone is furthermore applied in, among other things, the columns and the balcony sections. The straight-edged facades have a main cornice as closure with a wooden cornice resting on gutter blocks. The single and composite window and door sections consist predominantly of single and double casement windows, or doors with fanlights, all provided with glazing bars. Most windows are fitted with venetian blinds.

At the symmetrically arranged front facade facing the forecourt (northwest), the three-window-width central projection is crowned by a triangular pediment and flanked by cornice-topped facades of three window units, which are wider than the central projection. In front of the central projection is a columned portico as entrance section, consisting of eight Doric (half) columns, which support a balcony with balustrade. Decoratively forged ironwork closes off the sides of the portico. Its terrace is accessible via two granite entrance steps. The teak wooden entrance door is provided with carved ornament in Neo-Louis XV style with copper fittings. The two-pane side lights have stained glass with lead came windows.

On the storey in front of the balcony is a tripartite triplicate light with yellow cathedral glass separated by moulded pilasters. The triangular pediment has in the middle a round, four-pane oeil-de-boeuf. The right cornice-topped facade section has three windows at basement level. The front facade is closed off by blind walls of the rectangular extensions of the side facades.

At the left side facade (northeast) the right part consists of one storey with a balcony above it, provided with a balustrade comparable to that of the front facade. On the ground floor there is one window and on the storey a double French window. The two-storey left section has a window on the ground floor and storey with above it at an angle a tripartite window of a (Flemish) dormer under a ridge tile, which breaks through the cornice. In front of the two-storey section stands a slightly narrower, single-storey extension on a rectangular plan under a hipped roof. On the northeast side is a moulded staircase with retaining walls leading to double casement doors, which are flanked by narrow windows. The southeast side facade has one window.

The rear facade (southeast) has a symmetrical arrangement. Comparable to the front facade, the central projection is crowned by a triangular pediment, albeit that the projection extends to the attic storey and breaks through the cornice. In front of it, on the ground floor, is a semi-circular columned portico, consisting of four Doric columns and two half-columns, which support a balcony with balustrade. Below this is a double terrace door with a round-arched fanlight, provided with radiating glazing bars. The flanking narrow windows likewise have a round-arched fanlight. On the storey above, a double French window is flanked by narrow side windows. The right side facade section has on the ground floor a bay window with bevelled sides with on the balcony above a moulded, decoratively pierced balustrade. On either side of the bay window is a narrow window. On the storey is a window to the left of the double French window and two to the right. The right side facade (southwest) has a comparable arrangement to the northeast side facade. On the ground floor the facade on the right is partially whitewashed, at the location of a no longer existing conservatory. Here is now a double door with side and fanlights, for a broad terrace with retaining walls. Via four steps one enters the lower-lying garden. On the storey two windows are placed symmetrically in the facade. In the central axis is a comparable Flemish dormer as on the northeast side. At the left single-storey section steps with retaining walls lead to a service entrance with a window to the left. The balcony above is comparable in arrangement to that at the northeast corner.

INTERIOR. In the interior, which has been very well preserved in terms of plan and detailing, the New Historicising style is likewise evident, as well as the influences of English country house style, in combination with period rooms in various Neo-styles. Striking is the use of much marble, which the vestibule and various toilet and bathroom facilities have. The grey-veined marble floors and tall wainscoting are of grey-veined marble with black marble edging. Single and double washbasins on iron legs are likewise of marble. Also in the corridor and hall black and white marble in geometric block pattern, and in various rooms the chimneys have marble breasts. Parquet, among others with herringbone motif, appears in various rooms. Most spaces have stucco ceilings with simple moulded edging, partly with cassette pattern. Other original details such as fittings, marble chimneys (including green).

From the vestibule comes a spacious hall with an open staircase, consisting of winder stairs with intermediate landings and executed wainscoting and wooden, decoratively carved balusters and newel posts and stair light, provided with stained glass with lead came. The transversely placed corridor has round-arched passages, walls with simple moulded wainscoting and panelled doors with door moulding and main cornice. Opposite the staircase is (on the southeast side) a barrel-vaulted passage, consisting of double doors with side lights and barrel-vaulted fanlight, which leads to the living room. On the southwest side are the service rooms with among other things a service staircase, basement with storage cupboards and a modernised kitchen. The spaces on the southeast side are connected to each other by sliding doors en enfilade.

The living room in Old Dutch style has a ceiling with main and subsidiary beams and panelled wainscoting and a Tudor-arched passage to the terrace doors. Dining room to the southwest of this has dark low dark wooden wainscoting, display cabinets and moulding of, among others, the doors and the bay window. The room to the northeast of the living room is in Regency style and is finished with a high, Ionic, fluted Ionic pilaster articulation, wainscoting, closed off by an Ionic main cornice with guttae. Above the brown-veined marble chimney breast is a frieze.
