Inleiding complexonderdeel 4

Introduction to complex component 4

Garden and park layout belonging to the country estate Ter Veken consists of a landscape park and a geometric garden. From 19th-century cartographic material it appears that Terveken comprises a wooded, partly hilly interior dune with sand extraction channels, which belongs to 'Het Zwarte Hek'. This land originally formed the replacement holding of country estate Wiltrust, which in 1854 came into the possession of Frederik Hendrik. The excavations presumably already took place in the 18th century. Another 18th-century component is formed by the viewing mound near the house, the so-called Parnassus mound. The existing structure was probably adapted for the landscape park layout around 1908-1915. In front of the house there was originally a geometric garden layout in the New Architectural Garden style, which however was replaced by a lawn. In 1937 a garden layout was added around the house in the form of a Rock garden in Japanese style, which has been retained.

Description

The landscape park with its hilly layout extends around the country house, from which various paths lead through the park. The park layout is characterized by open and partly also enclosed spaces with varied planting, which is bounded by drainage channels. Various vistas have been created. Especially along the drainage channels on the northwest side, the somewhat winding course of the banks has created a strong spatial effect. Around the elevated house there is a spacious lawn, which is bounded by various groups of trees and rhododendrons. In the various lawns stand several solitary specimens, including a conifer, cedar and a red beech. For example, a beech stands to the east of the country house and on the bank of the northwestern drainage channel.

A striking element is the dune mound located north of the house, artificially thrown up in the 18th century (called viewing mound or Parnassus mound), planted with various oak trees. The hilliness and planting also provide additional depth effect. To the southeast along a path towards the northwestern drainage channel stands a row of birch trees. North of the mound stands a small open meadow. Northwest of the house is an elongated vegetable garden with grape conservatory and flower greenhouse. The approach road and the ditch to the southwest of it is flanked by a beech avenue. The conservatory to the southeast of the house is surrounded by a terrace layout with multiple levels, whereby the retaining walls constructed of off-quality brick have openings for rock plants. At the conservatory the stairs are flanked by mortared flower boxes. The terrace along the house and the paths in the borders are paved with flagstones. The planting consists among other things of azaleas and conifers and yews in various forms. On either side of the stairs, two conifers on either side of the stairs provide some degree of symmetry.

Valuation

The garden and park layout at the country estate Ter Veken is of general importance due to its garden and cultural-historical value

- as a landscape park layout and garden layout with rock garden in Japanese garden style, preserved intact in structure and partly in detail.

- due to its ensemble and situational value through the special spatial and visual relationship of the park with the house, whereby the path and channel pattern, the planting and hilliness of the land create depth effect.

- due to the spatial and functional relationship with the other complex components, in particular with the vegetable garden.
