Inleiding complexonderdeel 1

Introduction complex component 1

The main component of the country estate Ter Veken is the RESIDENTIAL HOUSE of the country house type built on commission of N.W. van Es by The Hague architect L.A.H. de Wolf (1871-1923) of the architecture firm Wolf. He designed in the period 1908-1911 a house in Country House style that aligns with the tradition of the Neo-Historicist style.

The inspiration from the English country house style, which gained popularity in this period, is evident among other things in the prominent entrance hall with a so-called 'inglehook' or 'cosy corner'. This is a bay-window-like extension with a monumental fireplace, flanked by fixed seating benches.

The lower window frames were originally flanked by shutters.

On commission of Mr. and Mrs. Van der Ven-Meissner, The Hague architect A. Mulder J. Jzn adapted the interior somewhat in 1928, which among other things involved the joining of the drawing room and conservatory in the interior into one reception room.

The country house lies partly due to its position against the uneven terrain on the south and east sides. It adjoins the forecourt on the southwest side.

Description

A freestanding, symmetrically arranged rectangular building mass consisting of a basement, two storeys and an attic, of which the main volume is covered by a hipped roof with hip rafters at lower ridge heights. The roof is covered with reddish-brown glazed (Echt-type) interlocking clay tiles and zinc ridge and hip tiles. The ridge direction runs parallel to the Schouwweg. On the ridge are three chimneys. The elevations are long elevations, built of (mis-coloured) hard grey brickwork (Flemish bond) with above the basement window a continuous roll moulding. Sandstone setting and weathering stones are found in part of the lintels above the single and composite window and door openings and in the round-arched relieving arch above the entrance portico. Decorative blocks are found among other things at the level of the alternating lintels of the windows. (Escauzijn) hard stone is used for drip mouldings, corner stones, steps and stoop. Below the windows a decorative 'beard' is laid out. The less representative windows and doors are covered by lintels or roll mouldings without decoration. At the level of the ground floor and upper floor is a roll moulding. Some of the windows at the hall and (northwest side) have leaded glass and reinstalled stained glass. Most of the windows with casement windows and T-sash windows have glazing bars in the fanlight. These fanlights, as well as the large window frame of the stairwell, are partly provided with leaded glass. The roof dormers have double windows with six-pane fanlights. The basement windows are provided with security bars.

Centrally in the symmetrically arranged front elevation (southeast) is a rectangular conservatory with balcony above, provided with a simplified iron balustrade. The double conservatory doors, which like the conservatory windows are provided with fanlights with glazing bars, give access to a raised terrace paved with flagstones and a long staircase to the rock garden, which has a terraced layout. In the side walls of the conservatory are basement windows. The door opening of the balcony on the upper floor has double doors and sidelights, likewise provided with glazing-barred fanlights. On either side of this central middle section are two windows on the ground floor and upper floor. On the attic in the middle is a substantial rectangular roof dormer with three pairs of double casement windows.

The main entrance is located on the left in a two-storey extension under a hip rafter from the left side elevation (southwest). The extended round-arched entrance portico is paved with hard-fired tiles and accessible via a staircase of more than 10 steps, of which the lowest is flanked by a wall on which a simple iron handrail is placed. Above the entrance portico hangs a lantern. The teak entrance door, provided with carved work, has side and fanlights with glazing bars. In the portico are tall, narrow side windows. On the upper floor is one window. The right recessed elevation section has two windows evenly distributed across the elevation on the ground floor and upper floor. On the attic is one roof dormer with double casement window. At the rear elevation (northwest) the presence of the basement is evident, which is accessible from this side. The irregular window arrangement is related to the function of the rooms behind. In the rectangular extended section in the middle is the 'cosy corner' which is covered by an adjoining hipped roof with a sag, on which a laid-out chimney is placed, which projects through the eaves of the main roof. To the right of this is a single-storey extension above the basement (toilet) with to the right of it a light well with stairs to the basement access. A second entrance to the service rooms in the basement is located on the left in the elevation. On the left on the upper floor is a large three-part window frame of the stairwell. The roof dormers on this side of the roof have been renewed and fall outside national monument protection.

The right side elevation (northeast) has on the right an extended two-storey section under a flat roof, one window unit wide. The left recessed elevation section is two window units wide. The basement has here one three-part window frame. On the attic one roof dormer with double casement window is installed.

In the INTERIOR the floor plan layout and detailing have been largely preserved including among other things the panelled doors. The floor of the hall and vestibule are of marble, as well as the approximately 160 cm high walls of the vestibule. In the hall is the extended 'cosy corner' in Old Dutch style with a fireplace with sandstone pilasters, dated 1661 and back wall with Delft blue tiles. The stairwell has a wooden balustrade. Mantelpiece of the fireplaces, the wainscoting and the fixed benches are of wood. In the living rooms occur stucco ceilings with geometric pattern and herringbone parquet. One fireplace with white-veined black marble and an oak surround and one heavy sandstone, relatively low fireplace. In the basement are the service rooms, including a kitchen which retains its original layout.
