Inleiding complexonderdeel 2

Introduction complex component 2

(AUTOMOBILE) GARAGE with SERVICE DWELLING (2) for the chauffeur belonging to the country estate Ter Veken was designed in 1911 by The Hague architect L.A.H. de Wolf (1871-1923), in the same style as the manor house, which is related to Transitional Architecture.

The garage is situated on the Schouwweg and is separated from the manor house by a ditch. It is located to the southeast of the drive.

Description

Detached building mass on rectangular plan consisting of two storeys under a hipped roof with zeeg, covered with reddish-brown Tuile-du-Nord tiles. On the ridge two identical chimneys with iron weathervane are placed. On the northeast and southwest sides respectively one and two roof dormers are located. Above the plint covered with a damp-proof course, the facades are built up in grey brick (Flemish bond) with fine-jointed masonry.

Natural stone is used for the corner and closing stones in the courses above door and windows, in the corbel arch above the double garage door and for the decorative blocks on either side of the doors and windows. The spandrel bands at the level of the lower and upper sills of the first-floor windows are of orange facing brick. The wooden projecting gutter has carved gutter brackets. The windows with glazing bars have for the most part shutters with hourglass motif in red/white/green. A number of the windows have two-paned lower windows with glazed fanlights. Each facade has on the first floor corner pilasters, which are coupled together by a projecting masonry frieze, creating a spandrel field. The front facade facing the drive (northeast) has in the middle a wooden double corbel-arched garage door with decoratively forged hardware. To the right of it is the entrance door to the upper dwelling, a panel door, provided with a barred light. To the right of the garage door is a six-paned window. On the first floor two windows are symmetrically placed in the facade. On the left side facade (southeast) two windows are symmetrically placed in the facade on the ground floor and first floor.

At the right side facade (northwest) are a series of four small windows of the staircase and on the left on the first floor is a window. The rear facade has on either side of the central axis on ground floor and first floor one window and on the left in the facade a pair of smaller windows.

The INTERIOR is largely in original condition. On the ground floor is the automobile garage with repair pit. On the northeast side is a staircase to the dwelling section on the first floor.

Valuation

The garage with service dwelling is of general importance due to cultural and architectural-historical value and due to typological value:

- as a functional component of the complex, built by analogy with historical country estates.

- as a good example of an (automobile) garage with chauffeur's dwelling from circa 1911, well-preserved in main form, material use and detailing, in the tradition of Transitional Architecture. It dates from the early period of a typologically new building type, which came into fashion in the early 20th century especially among the wealthy manor and country houses.

- due to the high ensemble value as part of the country estate Ter Veken and due to its defining location along the Schouwweg on the drive to the manor house.
