Inleiding complexonderdeel 1

Description
Introduction to main component 1
Belonging to the country estate complex is the COUNTRY HOUSE Huis Hoekenburg dating from approximately 1809. In the early seventeenth century the country seat Hooghenburgh is already mentioned; in 1684 it receives its present name. In the south-east facade is a stone from 1809 with the names of the commissioners A.F. and A.H. Thorbecke, cousins of the statesman Thorbecke. The interior with the Baroque paintings and the staircase date from 1809. In 1909 Hoekenburg came into the hands of J.D.M. de Voogt of the oil concern Deterding, later director of the Bataafse Petroleum Maatschappij. He had a wrought-iron gate installed at the entrance of the drive, which since 1973 has stood at the Parkweg near the park Vreugd en Rust. He also realizes a high conservatory of two storeys on the south-west facade, which was demolished in 1929. The house was in use between 1929-2000 by Effatha, the institute for deaf and hard-of-hearing children. The present appearance of the building dates from 1929 when the building was raised with a mezzanine according to a design by the architect A.T. Kraan of Kraan Groenewegen Verwijs in Leiden and the facades and the top gable on the Vliet side were altered. The present appearance of the building thus dates from 1929. In 1954 the large veranda on the south-west facade of the house was demolished and the coachhouse on the north-east facade, which had already been greatly altered in 1929, was replaced by a school building. The intermediate wing connecting Hoekenburg and the coachhouse was greatly altered in the process. The original jalousies have all disappeared. The dormer windows have been removed. The interior from 1809 has been largely preserved during the renovations.
N.B. The new construction on the north-east side is not included in the protection. The mezzanine contains new casement windows. In the late eighties a renovation took place, during which among other things various rooms were provided with a lowered ceiling.
Description
The house is built from a rectangular ground plan in rendered brick. It consists of two storeys with a mezzanine. The truncated hipped roof is covered with damped Tuiles du Nord. The building is connected by an intermediate wing, which is under a continuous roof and identical in detailing to the main volume, with the new construction on the north-east side. A low, sandstone plinth runs all round. Moreover, ashlar courses have been applied all round, consisting of stretcher courses of green, glazed bricks. The sash windows have 10-pane fanlights, sandstone sills and courses consisting of green, glazed stones. Below the mezzanine is a projecting wooden moulding running all round. The facades are finished with again a wooden moulding running all round. The symmetrical north-west facade consists of seven bays. The middle bay has a single-storey projection in the centre, in which the entrance is situated. On the projection is a balcony with wrought-iron railings and cemented balusters with sandstone heads. There are double glazed doors with 10-pane fanlight. The facades of the projection have projecting wooden mouldings. In the projection are elongated 18- and 27-pane windows. The entrance consists of a door in eighteenth-century style with an 18-pane fanlight. The fanlights of the windows on the first storey are provided with stained glass with portraits in medallions.
The right side facade (south-west side) has a terrace, which is screened off from the garden by open-work brick walls. There are natural stone coping stones and plinths on which the brick balusters rest. This screening is currently closed off. The principal facade is on the side of the Vliet (south-east side). This facade consists of seven bays and the three bays wide set-back intermediate wing. The middle bay of the main facade risalts slightly and cuts through the moulding below the mezzanine and subsequently the roof cornice. This risalit is crowned by a pediment. Between the first and second storey a tile tableau has been applied with the name of the house 'Hoekenburg'. At the apex the risalit is flanked by pilasters with inward-turning double doors between them provided with an iron railing. In the pediment is a round pivot window and stucco work with floral motifs. On the first storey on either side of the risalit are two windows placed with a double terrace door between them. Originally the fanlights were provided with stained glass. On the second storey three double casement windows have been placed on both sides. The step and coping stones and plinth of the mortared balustrade of the terrace consist of natural stone.
INTERIOR. The house has an asymmetrical layout. In the entrance lobby is a marble floor. Against the walls marble plaques (fastening finished with bronze ornamental knobs) have been applied. There is a stucco ceiling and a double entrance door with cut glass in door and fanlight and with bronze handle. To the left of the hall is a centrally located corridor with rooms on either side. In the hall and the corridor is marble wainscoting and marble dados and at the end of the corridor marble-faced wooden wainscoting. In the hall above the wainscoting are wall paintings in Neo-Baroque detailing with floral motifs and polychrome flower still lifes applied. A beam under the ceiling is supported by consoles with painted vertical decorative lines on the wall below. Along the staircase is wooden wainscoting applied with wall paintings in Neo-Baroque detailing with floral motifs and polychrome flower still lifes above it. Along the underside of the staircase and on the ceiling in the hall are panels with profiles within which paintings of swallows, swans and other birds are applied. Under the landings of the staircase and above the doors in the stairwell are paintings with cherubs and floral motifs applied. On the landing (in the hall) are stencilled paintings within profile mouldings in Neo-Baroque form. The wooden staircase rail is provided with a relief-carved festoon. The balusters are coupled in pairs in a rhythmic ascending manner, continuing to and including the highest storey. Above the stairwell is staircase lighting with stained glass in muted ochres. Above the door to the front middle room (water side) is a grisaille painted with dolphins and cherubs. Furthermore in the room itself is a polychrome stucco ceiling in Neo-Empire style. In the room on the left at the water side a papier-mâché ceiling with coving has been realized. The ceiling consists of a geometric pattern with Neo-Baroque mouldings in green and gold, floral motifs, palmettes and trompe l'oeil painting with cherubs. On the landing is among other things a room with a polychrome Neo-Empire stucco ceiling.
