Inleiding complexonderdeel 2

Introduction to complex component 2

The country house complex includes a COUNTRY HOUSE Huis Arentsburgh built in 1912, on an older building site, by the architects J.J., M.A., and J. van Nieukerken in The Hague in neoclassical style. The very first house on this plot was built in the fifteenth century and was inhabited by Jacob Arentz, namesake of the house. The original gardens of Arentsburgh, which extended as far as the Pr. Mariannalaan, were laid out around 1685. In front of the country house - in a remnant of the garden of Arentsburgh - stands a natural stone plinth in Louis XIV manner, originally belonging to Hoekenburg, to which a modern sundial has been added.

Between 1925 and 2000 the house was used by Effatha, as a school building for deaf and hard of hearing children. Extensions and alterations to the house took place in 1925-1930 under the direction of architect A.T. Kraan of Kraan Groenewegen Verwijs in Leiden and in 1953. In the draught vestibule there is a draught door with stained glass with the text 'And they brought unto him one that was deaf' presented by parents 17 June 1954, made by H. Liefkens in The Hague.

N.B. The extension on the north-east side is not included in the protection by the national authorities.

Description

The house is constructed from a near-square ground plan in two storeys with an attic storey in brick (Flemish bond). The hipped roof covered with slates in overlapping tile pattern has brick chimneys at the corners, which are clad in zinc all around. On the Vliet side there are hipped roofs at the location of the two projecting corner pavilions.

The facades are subdivided with windows provided with a fixed and a casement window with fixed fanlights above. The sills and lintels consist of natural stone. Decorative wrought-iron wall anchors of two types are incorporated on the front and rear facades. Staff anchors are located on the side facades. The facades are finished all around with a wooden cornice with dentil moulding.

The symmetrical, five-bay wide front facade (north-west side) has in the centre the entrance section with two windows on either side and on the second storey five windows. On the roof three dormer windows are placed, which are crowned with pediments. The dormer windows contain double casement windows with single-pane fanlights. In front of the entrance lies a hard stone step. The natural stone entrance section consists of a richly profiled panelled door with segment-arch-shaped three-part fanlight and side lights. All lights are provided with stained glass. In the fanlight is a lantern with a crown as decoration. The side lights are provided with wrought-iron ornamental railings. The richly profiled panelled door has an oak leaf relief. In front of the light in the door is ornamental wrought-iron railwork. The entrance is enclosed by a classicist assembly of Doric pilasters with an entablature and in the pediment an eagle with a castle tower. In the frieze the name Arentsburgh is inscribed in relief. In the spandrels '1913' is inscribed in relief.

The wooden canopy is supported by carved corbels.

In the asymmetrical south-west facade there are multiple windows of different types and a (non-original) dormer window.

The south-east facade is asymmetrical due to the conservatory on the left side. The five-bay wide facade has two-bay wide projecting corner pavilions. In the centre there is an entrance with double terrace doors and pilasters on either side and a pediment for closure. The conservatory has continuous windows with fanlights and a double garden door. The conservatory is finished with a wooden moulding and a balustrade around the balcony. The two windows in the right pavilion are provided with a relieving arch. These arches are enriched with sandstone setting and closing stones. On the second storey six windows are installed. On the roof three later added dormer windows stand. The terrace has a red tile floor, hard stone step treads and hard stone balustrade.

INTERIOR. The predominantly classicist detailed interior consists on the ground floor of a draught vestibule, large hall, narrow flights of stairs with intermediate landings and a number of rooms around them. To the rear right is a conservatory. There are among others panelled doors with profiling of the panels, profiled stile and rail work and original hinges and fastenings, strip parquet floors, stucco ceilings, marble fireplaces in classicist and Empire style and interior shutters. The entrance vestibule is equipped with barrel vaults, stucco ceiling and marble floor and on the entrance hall side wooden pilasters and a round arch motif. The entrance hall is equipped with a three-part ceiling with stucwork and a wooden fireplace with pilasters, cornice with dentil moulding and marble profiling around the hearth. Between the entrance hall and the stairwell a beam with dentil moulding is installed and below it pilasters along the walls. The director's office (to the left of the entrance) has wooden wall panelling with panels and around and above the panelled doors a stacking of pilasters, entablature and still life paintings. Iron grilles are installed for the built-in heating. In the room to the right of the entrance there are paintings with floral still lifes and putti.

The ground floor toilet is provided with hand-painted tiles in polychrome flower and vase motif. In the conservatory there is a tile floor with green and cream-coloured tiles and a decorative border all around. The wooden staircase has classicist stair balusters and richly detailed balusters finished by a closed moulding with dentil moulding and blank-finished stair rail. The richly worked stair baluster on the ground floor is provided with an eagle with a shield bearing the coat of arms of the De Man family in its claws. Along the staircase wooden panelling in classicist style has been realised. On the first floor there are among others barrel vaults, panelled doors with original rail and moulding work, some rooms with stucco ceilings and a simple marble fireplace.
