Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The former MUNICIPAL SLAUGHTERHOUSE from 1928 was built in functionalist style. It is located on the industrial estate de Kets, slightly to the north of the original centre of Kaatsheuvel and on the border with the municipality of Sprang-Capelle. It served as a slaughterhouse for Kaatsheuvel and Sprang-Capelle until around 1948. Around 1952 it was converted into a residence. In the process, the layout was altered and the ceramic wall tiles were removed.
The increasing meat consumption at the end of the nineteenth century led in the large cities to the establishment of municipal slaughterhouses, where hygiene was better assured and better control was possible. During the interwar period, the rural municipalities followed suit, as a result of stricter legislation.
Following German example, a strict spatial separation was introduced in the abattoirs between slaughtering and meat processing. For hygiene reasons, the slaughterhouse was increasingly situated on the edge of the centre.
Description
The single-storey building is constructed on a cruciform ground plan, which was prompted by the separation of functions, with the central slaughter hall presumably housed in the central nave, the slaughtering site in the western aisle, meat processing in the eastern aisle and mechanical refrigeration in the lower southern outbuilding. The flat roof, with slight slope, has a broad overhang, which ensured that as little direct sunlight as possible entered. The high-placed, right-angled windows with glazing bars, which are found all around, provided sufficient light and air, without overlooking. In the side wall of the eastern side wing, these windows were removed during the conversion of around 1954. Below the high-placed glazing bars in the three northern facades and the southern facade of the eastern side wing, a right-angled window with double casement has been installed. In the front facade a door has been placed beneath a two-pane fanlight. Various decorative brick bonds are applied in the facade. The slightly projecting plinth and band under the roof edge consist of a darker stone in horizontally placed half-brick bond. At eye level runs a slightly projecting speckled course of the same stone.
In the angle of the western and southern wing, an outbuilding was later placed one bay long and one wide, constructed in differing brick bond.
Valuation
The municipal slaughterhouse is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as a representative of the type of rural slaughterhouse. It is recognisable as such by its location, layout and construction method. It has architectural-historical value as a representative of functionalist building style during the interwar period in the countryside. It has ensemble value due to its location on the industrial estate outside the centre of Kaatsheuvel and on the border with Sprang-Capelle. It is rare as one of the few remaining representatives—and in Brabant the last representative—of this formerly common type. Despite the alteration to the interior, it has been reasonably well preserved.
