Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Former Roman Catholic HBS, nowadays called Citycollege St. Franciscus, built in 1922-1923 to a design in Wrightian style by P.G. Buskens and (his then assistant) H. Sutterland jr. The school replaced a property remodelled by Buskens on the Boompjes where the Catholic HBS had been housed since its foundation in 1919.
N.B. In 1962-1964 the school was extended with a (north-western) wing on the G.W. Burgerplein, designed by E.H. and H.M. Kraayvanger. In 1993-1994 the property was renovated and an extension of six classrooms was built in the courtyard to a design by P. Stipkovits, wherein the choice of materials and formal design sought to align with the Buskens design.
Description
The school building, situated on a rectangular plot, has roughly an L-shaped floor plan whereby the L-shape was originally enclosed by a western and northern low bicycle shed and a caretaker's residence of two storeys situated between them, thereby leaving a courtyard in the middle. Nowadays the courtyard is bounded on the north by the extension from the nineteen-sixties, and its southern part was built on in 1994. The school is built of light red thin hand-moulded brick (Limburgian manufacture) with sills, lintels, bands and strings of Ettringer tufa stone. The building consists of a composition of seven horizontal rectangular building volumes of unequal height and width with flat roofs. The number of storeys varies from one to three, increasing in height from front to back and towards the middle. Of the front on the Beukelsdijk, only the left section (two storeys) lies in the building line of this street, the remaining parts are set back in steps: successively on the right the corner block on which the (present) name of the school is displayed "Citycollege Sint-Franciscus" (assembled from the original metal lettering), in the middle a low section next to the entrance (rector's office), to the left behind it a tall section, on the right a slightly lower section, in which the entrance is situated. Behind it a section with three storeys, bounded on the left side by the tower which is also composed of various parts and therefore steps back in height. The flat concrete roofs have projecting eaves with an egg-and-dart-like decorative band as well as a moulding. Besides differing in height and position, the building volumes also differ from each other through the application of different (composite) window openings. The windows have wooden frames and are provided at the top with (projecting) lintels and under-sills of tufa stone. The lintels are more robust than the under-sills. The most characteristic windows consist of one-, two- or three-light windows which, like the lintels and under-sills, project slightly from the facade plane and are provided with narrower (mullioned) lower and fanlights. The fanlights slope inward and are separated from each other by undulating profiled glazing bars. Above the main entrance (entrance section no longer original), reached via a natural stone staircase, is located a concrete canopy above which a narrow strip of windows is installed. Above this is a loggia, which is cut wider at the top. Originally above the loggia was the (old) name "R.K. Hoogere Burgerschool". The building is closed off at the front by a low brick wall with wrought-iron decorative edging with a scroll motif. The entrance is marked by two square pillars on which wrought-iron bowls rest. (Originally the corner volume on the right was also bordered by a low wall.) The tower has two narrow horizontal windows on the east and west sides and two on the south side. On this side there is also a clock face in the lower section. The various tower sections are chamfered with an edge of decorative brickwork. The facade on the Velsenluststraat consists of two projecting end sections and a recessed middle section, varying in height (low-high-intermediate). They contain various window divisions, composite, elongated and square. On the corner of Beukelsdijk/Velsenluststraat was originally a natural stone sculpture of the Sacred Heart. The image was probably shot to pieces during the war. The facade on the courtyard side is relatively quiet. The west (rear) facade of the wing on the Velsenluststraat contains on the ground floor, far right on either side of the rear entrance reached by a staircase, two-light windows with lower and fanlights and to the left of these six single windows with lower and fanlights. On the upper storeys there are five two-light windows with lower and fanlights. Far right there is still a window series with on each storey a three-light window strip. The tower contains on the ground floor a door and on the north and west side between the first and second storeys two-light narrow rectangular windows. The rear facade of the wing on the Beukelsdijk contains on the ground floor on the left an entrance section, reached by a staircase, with on the left a double door and on the right an internal staircase upwards. On the right in the facade is a single and a two-light window with lower and fanlights and on the upper storey four windows each with a (wider) three-light fanlight.
In the interior of the school building, directly behind the main entrance is the central hall, situated at the point where the two wings connect. This also contains the main staircase. From the hall on the left is the chemistry laboratory. On the first storey above this is the hall (originally and/or chapel). This originally had wooden wainscoting and a moulded ceiling. The original (Art Deco) leaded glass windows were replaced shortly after the war by stained-glass windows with religious scenes, designed by Father Van den Berg. From the hall straight through are the various other classrooms on either side of a wide corridor, in three storeys one above the other. At the end of this corridor are the gymnastics rooms, one of which has been converted into a canteen. The stairs have hard stone treads and mouldings on the balustrades. A number of rectangular (upright) windows in the stairwells still contain the original leaded glass windows with Art Deco motif.
Valuation
The Roman Catholic HBS, nowadays Citycollege St. Franciscus, built in 1922-1923 in Wrightian style is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural historical value, as well as being of importance within the oeuvre of architect P.G. Buskens.
