Inleiding

Waardering

De TUINAANLEG is van algemeen belang:

- de aanleg heeft tuinarchitectuurhistorische en stedenbouwkundige waarde vanwege de typerende opzet en de karakteristieke vormentaal;

- de aanleg heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een door S. van Ravesteyn ontworpen dierentuinaanleg;

Introduction

The garden layout of the zoo can be divided into two parts. The largest part was laid out according to the design by Van Ravensteyn and the smaller part is a later added layer on the southwest side. The layout of this later added layer falls outside the protection. The part included within the protection consists in outline of the central axis, water features, the path system, the squares and the open grazing areas. Through the introduction of a new zoo concept, part of the original grazing areas and path layout has been altered. Furthermore, the central axis has been interrupted and the original furnishings (planting, boundaries and fences) in the relevant areas have been removed. In the area around the Rivièrahal, the large carnivore enclosure, the bear theater and near the main entrance, the layout and path system according to the original plan is still largely recognizable.

Description

GARDEN LAYOUT (2). The terrain is divided by the central axis which originates in the southwest corner at the bear theater and originally ended in the northwest corner at the giraffe house and the tearoom. Due to changes on the north side of the terrain, the axis has become approximately one third shorter and now ends at the pond. On the axis are located the most prominent buildings and the pond. The Rivièrahal is the most dominant. Around the axis of symmetry, the main paths wind with alternating curved forms, widenings and round squares. A second, secondary axis concerns a water axis which has been laid out from the east as a continuation of the Statensingel towards the tower. The undulating formal language of the path system is reflected in the demarcation of the beds, water features and ponds. Most of the wooden animal enclosures are also curved into the bending of the paths as well as the concrete parapets and edgings in the ground, which emphasizes the articulation of the paths. Originally there were four round squares on the corners of the pond, each designed differently by means of sculptures. Of these squares only the southwest square with a large round concrete pond basin with a fountain in the form of a boy with fish still remains intact. To the northwest, a round, sunken and bordered planted bed still reminds one of the former square. To the southeast, the sculpture depicting a girl figure with geese and fish has been moved slightly. The northeast square has disappeared entirely. In the footpath to the east of the Triviaal is a concrete bridge with a round iron railing on cast iron vases and on both sides J-shaped end pieces. The grazing areas, although not all intact and recognizable as such, are shaded to the north of the pond in a radiating arrangement.

Valuation

The GARDEN LAYOUT is of general importance:

- the layout has garden architectural history and urban planning value because of its characteristic design and the distinctive formal language;

- the layout has cultural-historical value as an example of a zoo layout designed by S. van Ravensteyn;

- the object has ensemble value because of its coherence with other complex components.
