Inleiding
KANTOORGEBOUW voor de 'Scheepsvaartvereeniging-Zuid' (SVZ) een in 1907 opgerichte werkgeversorganisatie voor de behartiging van scheepvaart- en havenbelangen, gebouwd in 1920-1922 in Expressionistische stijl naar ontwerp van architect W. Kromhout Czn, op voorspraak van de heer A.J.M. Goudriaan, bestuurslid van de vereniging. Het gebouw diende ter vervanging van de vestiging van het voormalige SVZ-kantoor aan het Willemsplein.
N.B. In 1987 verhuisde de SVZ naar het Adriaan Volker Huis aan de Oostmaaslaan. In dat zelfde jaar betrok de Vereniging Humanitas het pand.
Omschrijving
Het geheel vrijstaande voormalige SVZ-kantoor is gesitueerd op een rechthoekig bouwterrein op de hoek van de Pieter de Hoochweg en de Willem Buytewechstraat en heeft een symmetrische plattegrond met drie, rond een rechthoekige kern geplaatste ellipsvormige volumes. Het gebouw is onderkelderd en boven een plint van baksteen in paars-rode kleur opgetrokken in rode baksteen met terracotta geveldetails in de vorm van sier- en sluitstenen, venster- en waterdorpels uit het atelier van Willem Brouwer. De verdiept liggende kozijnen van de deuren en gevarieerde vensters zijn van hout. De plasticiteit van de gevel wordt versterkt door gemetselde lisenen, horizontale gevelbanden en uitkragende 'boegen'. Achter de hoger opgetrokken buitenmuren bevinden zich platte met mastiek bedekte daken. Op de hoeken van de dwarsvleugels, verscholen achter een hoger opgetrokken borstwering, zijn terrassen gesitueerd. Het pand bestaat uit een terugliggend, drie bouwlagen tellend, rechthoekig bouwvolume parallel aan de Pieter de Hoochweg, geflankeerd door twee aan scheepsboegen refererende uitstekende dwarsvleugels aan beide uiteinden. Aan de achterzijde bevindt zich een bouwvolume van twee bouwlagen. Over de lengte-as van het gebouw bevindt zich een hoger bouwvolume met in het hoogste deel aan de zuid- en noordzijde een scheepsmast. In de voorgevel aan de Pieter de Hooghweg is boven het hoofdvolume in een omkaderd geveldeel in terracottategels gemetseld: SCHEEPVAARTVEREENIGING-ZUID. Het terugliggende centrale geveldeel aan de Pieter de Hoochweg is symmetrisch gecomponeerd rond een monumentale ingang met een brede, deels gemetselde, deels natuurstenen, trap en een omlijsting van decoratief metselverband. De dubbele stalen deur bevat decoratieve verticale vensters met smeedijzeren siertraliewerk. Boven de deur in het omlijste deel een strook vensters met afgeschuinde bovenlichten. De ingangspartij wordt geflankeerd door twee smallere met lisenen omlijste geveldelen, waarin zich op de begane grond en de eerste verdieping brede vensters bevinden met vierkante vierledige bovenlichten. Op de tweede verdieping boven het middendeel een strook van zeven smalle vensters met bovenlicht en links en rechts drie smalle vensters. In de kopse gevels van de dwarsvleugels op de begane grond en op de eerste verdieping twee hoge smalle vensters met tussenliggende lisenen doorlopend in het boegvormig bouwvolume erboven. De zijgevel aan de Willem Buytewechstraat bevindt zich achter een eenvoudig ijzeren voetinghek, waarvan het metselwerk doorloopt in de plint van de gevel. Deze, eveneens symmetrisch gelede, zijgevel heeft in het midden twee zijingangen, van elkaar gescheiden door de gemetselde console van het uitkragende bouwvolume erboven, dat doorloopt in de 'scheepsbrug' dwars over het gebouw. De verdiepte vensters zijn alle aan de bovenzijde voorzien van markiezen. Op de begane grond aan weerszijden direct naast de ingang een breed venster met glas-in-lood bovenlichten en daarnaast een smaller venster. Op de eerste verdieping in het uitkragende bouwdeel boven de ingang twee smalle vensters en aan weerszijden hiervan een groot venster conform de begane grond en ernaast een klein rechthoekig venster. In een iets terugliggend geveldeel op de eerste verdieping een klein rechthoekig venster. In het hoger opgetrokken uitkragende bouwdeel in het midden twee smalle rechthoekige vensters met een boegvormige bekroning. De geleding van de noordelijke zijgevel is op de eerste en tweede verdieping identiek an die van de zuidelijke zijgevel: in het uitkragende middendeel twee hoge smalle vensters waarnaast een breed zesledig venster en een smal rechthoekig venster. In de dwarsvleugels op de eerste en de tweede verdieping een rechthoekig venster. In het één verdieping hoger opgetrokken dwarsvolume bevindt zich links en rechts een deur geflankerd door een rechthoekig venster. De achtergevel heeft in de verschillende bouwvolumes rechthoekige schuifvensters met bovenlichten. De uitbouw aan de achterzijde bevat zes kleine boegvormige erkers met smalle rechthoekige glas-in-loodvensters voorzien van siertraliewerk. Het oorspronkelijke interieur uit de bouwtijd is grotendeels bewaard gebleven. Het voorportaal heeft een houten tourniquet die toegang geeft tot de centrale hal. Deze is wit gepleisterd boven een borstwering van geelgroene baksteen en een donkere bakstenen bies. De vloeren zijn geplaveid met natuursteen (Rouge Royal en Comblachien). De hal en het trappenhuis worden verlicht door grote veelhoekige glas-in-loodvensters in het trappenhuis. De marmeren trap heeft een houten trapleuning met een smeedijzeren balustrade, vervaardigd door kunstsmederij Winkelman & Van der Bijl, geplaatst op grote grijs-bruin getinte marmerblokken. Achter het trappenhuis op de begane grond bevindt zich de vergaderzaal met een eenvoudige lambrizering van gepolitoerd vurehout, waarin met contrasterend donker gelakt hout een horizontale geleding is aangebracht en waarin de verwarmingselementen zijn verhuld bij de vensternissen. De zaal wordt verlicht door een legraam van glas-in-lood met geometrische motieven van glazenier W. Bogtman uit Haarlem. In de zaal is nog het oorspronkelijke speciaal gemaakte houten meubilair, in Art Déco stijl, aanwezig. De zaal wordt verlicht door eenvoudige Gispen plafondlampen.

OFFICE BUILDING for the 'Scheepsvaartvereeniging-Zuid' (SVZ), an employers' organisation for the promotion of shipping and port interests founded in 1907, built in 1920-1922 in Expressionist style to the design of architect W. Kromhout Czn, at the instigation of Mr A.J.M. Goudriaan, board member of the association. The building served to replace the former SVZ office on the Willemsplein.
N.B. In 1987 the SVZ moved to the Adriaan Volker Huis on the Oostmaaslaan. In that same year the Humanitas Association moved into the premises.
Description
The entirely detached former SVZ office is situated on a rectangular building plot at the corner of the Pieter de Hoochweg and the Willem Buytewechstraat and has a symmetrical ground plan with three ellipsoidal volumes arranged around a rectangular core. The building has a basement and is constructed above a plinth of brick in purple-red colour in red brick with terracotta facade details in the form of ornamental and closing stones, window and drip mouldings from the studio of Willem Brouwer. The recessed door and window frames are of wood. The plasticity of the facade is enhanced by mortared pilasters, horizontal facade bands and projecting 'arches'. Behind the higher-built external walls are flat roofs covered with mastic. On the corners of the transverse wings, concealed behind higher-built parapets, are terraces situated. The building consists of a recessed three-storey rectangular building volume parallel to the Pieter de Hoochweg, flanked by two transverse wings projecting at both ends that reference ship bows. On the rear side is a two-storey building volume. Along the longitudinal axis of the building is a higher building volume with on the highest part on the south and north side a ship's mast. In the front facade on the Pieter de Hooghweg is above the main volume in a framed facade part in terracotta tiles mortared: SCHEEPVAARTVEREENIGING-ZUID. The recessed central facade part on the Pieter de Hoochweg is symmetrically composed around a monumental entrance with a wide, partly mortared, partly natural stone, staircase and a framing of decorative brickwork bond. The double steel door contains decorative vertical windows with wrought-iron ornamental grilles. Above the door in the framed part a strip of windows with chamfered fanlights. The entrance section is flanked by two narrower facade parts framed by pilasters, in which on the ground floor and the first storey are broad windows with square four-part fanlights. On the second storey above the central section a strip of seven narrow windows with fanlight and left and right three narrow windows. In the gabled ends of the transverse wings on the ground floor and on the first storey two high narrow windows with intervening pilasters continuing in the bow-shaped building volume above. The side facade on the Willem Buytewechstraat is situated behind a simple iron footrail fence, of which the brickwork continues in the plinth of the facade. This, likewise symmetrically divided, side facade has in the middle two side entrances, separated from each other by the mortared console of the projecting building volume above, which continues in the 'ship's bridge' transversely across the building. The recessed windows are all provided with awnings at the top. On the ground floor on either side directly next to the entrance a broad window with leaded-glass fanlights and next to it a narrower window. On the first storey in the projecting building part above the entrance two narrow windows and on either side of these a large window conforming to the ground floor and next to it a small rectangular window. In a slightly recessed facade part on the first storey a small rectangular window. In the higher-built projecting building part in the middle two narrow rectangular windows with a bow-shaped crown. The articulation of the northern side facade is on the first and second storeys identical to that of the southern side facade: in the projecting central section two high narrow windows next to which a broad six-part window and a narrow rectangular window. In the transverse wings on the first and second storeys a rectangular window. In the transverse volume built one storey higher are situated on the left and right a door flanked by a rectangular window. The rear facade has in the various building volumes rectangular sash windows with fanlights. The extension on the rear side contains six small bow-shaped bays with narrow rectangular leaded-glass windows provided with ornamental grilles. The original interior from the time of construction is largely preserved. The entrance vestibule has a wooden turnstile which gives access to the central hall. This is white-plastered above a parapet of yellow-green brick and a dark brick band. The floors are paved with natural stone (Rouge Royal and Comblachien). The hall and the staircase are lit by large polygonal leaded-glass windows in the staircase. The marble staircase has a wooden handrail with a wrought-iron balustrade, manufactured by the metalworking studio Winkelman & Van der Bijl, placed on large greyish-brown tinted marble blocks. Behind the staircase on the ground floor is the meeting room with simple panelling of polished spruce wood, in which with contrasting dark lacquered wood a horizontal articulation is applied and in which the heating elements are concealed at the window locations. The room is lit by a structural glass frame of leaded-glass with geometric motifs by glazier W. Bogtman from Haarlem. In the room is still the original specially made wooden furniture, in Art Deco style, present. The room is lit by simple Gispen ceiling lamps.
Valuation
Former office building for the Shipping Association-South executed in rich expressionist manner with internally and externally many references to the shipping industry which was so important especially in Rotterdam, of general importance because of the great visual impact, architectural and cultural-historical value.
