INLEIDING

Description
INTRODUCTION
Former OFFICE BUILDING of the Rotterdamse Lloyd, built in 1920-'22 on the Lloydpier in business-expressionist style. W. Kromhout Czn. designed the panelling of the meeting room and the director's offices.
N.B. The building nowadays functions as a collective building for various businesses and enterprises. The building has a new main entrance.
Description
The office building comprising three storeys and a basement is constructed on a rectangular ground plan around a reinforced concrete skeleton in dark red brick with natural stone sills, corner stones and closing stones under a flat roof. The windows and doors of the building are set in steel frames. The various entrances are accessible via natural stone stairs. The facades, except for the virtually blind east facade, are strongly articulated vertically by brick pilasters between the window axes. These terminate slightly above the roofline with natural stone closing stones. Just above ground level, in the middle below the ground floor windows, are small air vents. The windows vary per storey in size and subdivision. On the ground floor the windows are largest and have a small (sixteen-pane) glazing bars. The first floor contains slightly narrower cross windows. The cross windows on the third floor are even smaller and lower. At both floors they are provided with small glazing bars in the fanlights. Directly above the rollers of the windows throughout the building is a small sawtooth ornament in the brickwork. Below the windows on the ground floor is a facade surface built in relief work. The windows on the upper floors are provided with natural stone drip moulding. The front facade, on the west side, is twelve window bays wide between two corner projections that are slightly higher, the corners of which on the ground floor and on the second floor are chamfered and suggest ship's bows. In the left corner projection, in the slanting facade surface on the ground floor, is a long six-pane window under a natural stone lintel. Above this, resting on a natural stone console, a bay window with two narrow windows with fanlight. On the second floor there is here a small balcony with natural stone balustrade and in the slanting facade surface a simple door. Above this, attached to the natural stone closing stone, an iron flagpole holder. To the left of the higher corner section 'ANNO' is carved, to the right of this '1922'.
The right corner projection, behind which is located on the first floor the former director's office, is chamfered on the ground floor and on the second floor in accordance with the left corner projection. At the top of this facade section the monogram of the firm (RL) is set in natural stone here. The main entrance is located in the front facade slightly to the right of centre (between the second and seventh window bay from the right).
In the higher corner section of the southern facade, which is eighteen window bays wide, under an iron lintel is situated a simple wooden service entrance. At the level of the fifth, sixth and seventh window axis from the right, behind a natural stone loading platform are respectively a large and a small double loading door. The latter with an iron hoisting bar and under an iron lintel.
In the interior, the following are particularly important: the representative hall with sea-green tiles and a meandering white banding, the coffered ceiling and floors of Norwegian granite, the central staircase with an iron balustrade featuring Art Deco motifs, the oak panelling of the director's offices and meeting room on the first floor, designed in 1920 by W. Kromhout Czn., with marble fireplaces, parquet floors and stucco ceilings.
