Inleiding

Introduction

Residential house built in the style of traditionalism, within the built-up area, situated behind the building line, dating from circa 1908. The building was constructed on the orders of the former mayor Claessen van Melick. Against the right side gable at the rear is an extension in one storey under a lean-to roof. The extension is not described here.

Description

Two-storey building, with rectangular ground plan, and attic storey under a gabled roof with pantiles. Two chimneys at ridge ends. The roof has a profiled wooden gutter on brackets at the front, at the rear a zinc gutter.

The house is built in red brick in Flemish bond with open-jointed red joints and a white mortared plinth. The front facade has a projection in yellow/grey sandstone.

Segmental arch windows under curved surround, with sandstone lintels in the front facade. The remaining windows have mortared lintels. The front facade is regularly divided, with four facade openings in the first storey, three of which are casement windows with leaded glass in the fanlights.

To the left of the right window is a shallow entrance portico with an authentic wooden front door with leaded glass panels and in the fanlight also leaded glass. The plinth of the front facade is mortared and painted. A sandstone staircase with two steps leads to the door. In the second storey are four casement windows, with leaded glass fanlights. The front facade is enlivened with a horizontal band featuring a tooth pattern beneath the windows of the second storey. Beneath the roof gutter a dentil motif is applied. Ornamental corner pilasters are also present.

Both right and left side gables are virtually blank, except for the double round-arch gable windows.

The rear facade has two windows with glazing bars in the first storey, left and right. In the centre a door with sandstone lintel. To the left of the door a small leaded glass window. Above the door a transom window with glazing bars in leaded glass. In the second storey are two windows with glazing bars, left and right. There are also ornamental wall anchors.

The building has an intact interior. In almost all rooms and in the hall there are still stucco ceiling ornaments depicting fruit, flowers and doves. The building is also structurally intact. There is a central corridor, with an authentic wooden staircase with balusters at the end. In the hall the walls are lined with marble up to the ceiling and there is a pointed arch on two consoles. In the hall is an authentic tiled floor in grey-black.

On the left is a living room en suite, separated by tall authentic doors. In the front room the authentic panelled doors are still present and there is a black marble fireplace with some pieces in red marble. The wooden floor has been renewed. In the back room on the left is a fireplace in black marble with small green elements.

To the right of the hall are the dining room and the kitchen. In the first room to the right of the hall, the dining room, a marble chimney piece and authentic panelled doors.

All windows have been renewed in wood according to the old model. In the hall next to the staircase is a removable partition. The kitchen has been renewed and there is a new floor in the extension kitchen and in the living room to the left of the hall. In the hall the walls have been lined with marble up to the ceiling. The fanlights of the windows in the front facade are leaded glass and date from circa 1925. The ironwork at the front of the building was replaced in 1957 and has brick columns with a mortared diamond-shaped capital. The wrought iron railings are placed on a brick wall with a saddle back.

Valuation

The former mayor's residence is of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a typological development. The building possesses architectural-historical value because of the applied building style and in particular because of the use of sandstone in the front facade and the rich interior furnishing. The building is finally of general importance on the grounds of the high degree of architectural integrity of exterior and interior and the typological and supra-regional architectural-historical rarity.
