Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Neo-Gothic CEMETERY CHAPEL at the edge of the cemetery in Melick, municipality of Roerdalen, on top of the Kerkberg.
The chapel originally formed part of the parish church of Melick as the middle of three radial chapels, situated on top of the Kerkberg. The neo-Gothic church was built by master mason Martinus Pollard from Maasniel, according to a design by architect Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers. On 9 April 1867 Reverend H. Peys laid the foundation stone of the new parish church, which was to replace the old dilapidated church. On 14 October 1884 the church was consecrated by Mgr. Paredis, Bishop of Roermond.
On 9 February 1945 the retreating German occupiers blew up the tower of the church. Due to an excessively heavy explosive charge, the entire church was destroyed. The middle of the three radial chapels, however, remained intact and was put into use as a cemetery chapel.
Description
The CEMETERY CHAPEL has a hexagonal ground plan in one storey under a constrained tent roof with bitumen covering. An iron cross stands on the roof. The chapel is constructed of brick.
The masonry is executed in stretcher bond. Three of the six facades are cemented. On the rear side there is a stone tablet in a niche commemorating the consecration of the church in 1884. On the corners of the facade surfaces there is in each case a two-part buttress with two natural stone coping strips. The chapel has along its entire perimeter both a projecting plinth with natural stone coping strip/drip moulding as well as a horizontal natural stone band, which likewise serves as drip moulding. Under the roof edge runs a band of natural stone which also supports the roof. The facade openings are pointed arch-shaped and have natural stone sills and steps. The windows have yellow leaded glass panes. The pointed arch-shaped entrance is doubly stepped. At the entrance there also remain on each side natural stone bases, which served as supports and connections to the former church. These bases also appear at the front buttresses.
In front of the chapel two saint statues have been placed which remained from the old church, namely St. Apollonia and St. Paul.
In the INTERIOR the chapel ceiling with ribbed vaulting. The ribs rest on pilasters in the side walls. On these pilasters also rest the six pointed arches which are found in the walls of the chapel.
The walls are plastered. The wooden altar with wooden tabernacle and cross are placed against the rear wall in a pointed arch. In the two remaining facade surfaces we find two empty niches with two grave stones below them.
Valuation
The architectural-historical values of the cemetery chapel on the Kerkberg are determined by the particular importance of the chapel for the history of architecture and by its own particular place within the oeuvre of architect Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers. The object further has a particular decorative design and coherence of exterior and interior. The chapel possesses cultural-historical value as an expression of the emancipation of Roman Catholic religious observance in Limburg.
The chapel is a relic, recalls in this form the Second World War and has historical significance both in material and symbolic terms. The object makes an intact impression and is situated within an ensemble: the cemetery in Melick, municipality of Roerdalen. The chapel is of rare value given the number of cemetery chapels that still remain in the province of Limburg. The chapel is of general importance due to the architectural-historical and cultural-historical values, the ensemble value, the high integrity and the rarity.
