Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
PAVILION ("Pavilion J") of the St. Servatiusgesticht built in 1905-1907 to the design of Henri van der Plas and originally intended for 50 sufferers of epilepsy. The pavilion has, in deviation from the other pavilions of the institution, only one storey and is located in the rear part of the layout to the east of the central axis. Behind Pavilion J there is still an original GARDEN.
Description.
Detached pavilion with a rectangular garden adjoining the south facade, surrounded by a hedge with large swing gates in it. The garden has a walkway paved with red clinker bricks in the form of two touching ovals, according to the condition in photographs from around 1908. The lobes within the paths are filled with grass and planted with some shrubs and trees and the garden furthermore has simple ornamental planting. In the southeastern corner of the garden lies slightly elevated a garden house (see monument number 5638253).
The pavilion has one storey and a high roof space built on a mainly H-shaped ground plan with an extension on the east side in which originally some isolation cells. The composite hipped roof has hipped Tuile du Nord tiles and is crowned at the ridge ends with zinc ridge irons. For drainage a simple wooden profiled gutter on small, profiled gutter brackets. The brick facades with low plastered plinth possess the general characteristics of the pavilions described in the complex description (monument number 5628231). The facade openings are almost all in their original position, but almost all windows have been replaced with plastic examples with glazing bars according to the original model.
The front facade, like the rear facade, has an almost symmetrical layout with corner risalits, whereby the symmetry is broken by the extension on the east side. In the front facade a regular division with large arched windows to the model usual for the institution with in the middle an opening with a door from the third quarter of the twentieth century. The right side facade has several similar windows as aforementioned at irregular distances from each other. Around the middle window building traces in the masonry. Presumably a door was replaced here once with a window.
The left side facade has, in connection with the corridor behind, an original side entrance with above it a loading hatch in a stepped gable. The rear facade has in the left risalit in which were originally located toilet spaces, a series of small six-pane arched windows on continuous water table. Between the risalits a slightly projecting originally open veranda consisting of nine upright frames on a stone balustrade. In the balustrade two openings to the garden. The veranda is now completely closed with modern windows and doors and finished inside, with preservation of the original structure.
The interior has retained the main layout with a continuous central corridor in the width of the building, but has been completely modernized internally. The opening in the front facade has broken the structure of the large dormitories originally present on this side. The construction of the high, partially still unfinished roof truss structure has been retained.
Valuation.
Pavilion J with its associated garden is of general, cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance as an essential component of the psychiatric institution St. Servatius which was built at the beginning of the twentieth century according to the pavilion system.
The building is of typological value in conjunction with the other preserved pavilions of the institution because they by their situation in the layout, their specific spatial layout and facade treatment are illustrative of the categorical treatment by social class and disorder which characterized institutions in this period.
Because of the presence of an adjoining patient garden, the building furthermore provides a very complete and original picture of a treatment pavilion of a psychiatric institution from this period.
