Inleiding.
PAVILJOEN ("Paviljoen G") van het St. Servatiusgesticht in 1905-1907 gebouwd naar ontwerp van Henri van der Plas en oorspronkelijk bestemd voor 60 behoeftige rustige patiënten. Het paviljoen is vooraan in de noordoostelijke hoek van de aanleg gelegen en heeft een representatieve voorgevel met opvallende koepeldaken. Achter paviljoen G bevindt zich geen besloten achtertuin meer. In de rechter zijgevel wijzen bouwsporen op een verdwenen glazen verbindingsgang.
Omschrijving.
Vrijstaand paviljoen van twee bouwlagen en een zolderverdieping op samengesteld grondplan met aan de noordzijde twee hoekrisalieten bekroond door forse koepeldaken. Het samengestelde schilddak is belegd met gesmoorde muldenpannen en wordt bekroond door pironnen op de nokuiteinden. De koepeldaken zijn belegd met leien en versierd met blinde oeil-de-boeufs. De koepel staat op een vijfzijdige, zich verjongende tamboer als overgang tussen de veelhoekig risaliet en de in omtrek cirkelvormige koepel. De koepels worden afgesloten door een blinde lantaarn rondom gedecoreerd met cirkels en gedekt door een tweede koepeltje bekroond door een smeedijzeren siernaald met windvaan.
De gevels met gecementeerde, deels gefrijnde plint bezitten de algemene kenmerken van de paviljoens zoals beschreven in de complexomschrijving (monumentnummer 5638231), zij het dat paviljoen G rijker is uitgevoerd met een aan de voor- en zijgevels uitkragende gootlijst op een uitgemetseld boogfries waarin toepassing van hardsteen. De omlopende bakgoot wordt ondersteund door rijker gesneden consoles en in de voorgevel komen grotere, samengestelde vensters onder korfboogvormige bovenlichten voor.
De voorgevel kent een voornamelijk symmetrische indeling met vensters zoals beschreven. De afgeschuinde hoeken van de vijfzijdige risalieten zijn afgezet met rode verblendsteen. In de risalieten bevinden zich naast genoemde vensters ook blinde vensters.
De rechter zijgevel heeft een bijna symmetrische indeling in vijf vensterassen. De bredere middenas heeft in de eerste bouwlaag een entree met dubbele deur voorzien van ruitindeling. De deur heeft een korfboogvormig bovenlicht met tussen deur en bovenlicht een extra lichtstrook. De verdieping bevat enkele blinde vensters. Voor de gevel een rolstoelbaan en nieuwe stoep van drie treden. De drie rechter assen van de eerste bouwlaag zijn in zichtbaar nieuwer metselwerk uitgevoerd. Hier bevond zich vermoedelijk de aansluiting van de thans verdwenen glazen verbindingsgang.
De linker zijgevel heeft links een platgedekte oorspronkelijk uitbouw over twee bouwlagen voorzien van kleine wc-raampjes in de eerste bouwlaag. Rechts hiervan vensters zoals beschreven.
De achtergevel bezit rechts een gemetselde eenlaags uitbouw. De serre die zich tegen de achtergevel bevindt sluit tegen deze uitbouw aan. Deze vermoedelijk oorspronkelijk open veranda is vermoedelijk in het eerste kwart van de twintigste eeuw met glas dichtgezet en bestaat uit een constructie met standvinken op een hardstenen balustrade. De veranda is grotendeels met een lessenaardak afgesloten, maar geheel links en ongeveer in het midden platgedekt. Ter hoogte van deze platten bevinden zich in de tweede bouwlaag deuren.
Het interieur heeft de hoofdopzet met een doorlopende middengang in de breedte van het pand bewaard, maar is wat afwerking van deuren, vloeren en plafonds betreft volledig gemoderniseerd. In de kelder zijn nog wel diverse vloeren belegd met patroontegels bewaard, voorts de hardstenen bordestrap in de noordwestelijke risaliet en de houten constructies van de hoge onbeschoten kap en koepeldaken.
Waardering.
Paviljoen G is van algemeen, cultuur-historisch en architectuur-historisch belang als essentieel onderdeel van de psychiatrische inrichting St. Servatius die aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw volgens het paviljoenstelsel werd gebouwd.
Het pand is in samenhang met de andere bewaard gebleven paviljoens van typologische waarde omdat ze door hun situering in de aanleg, hun specifieke ruimtelijke opzet en gevelbehandeling illustratief zijn voor de categoriale behandeling naar sociale klasse en stoornis die inrichtingen in deze periode kenmerken. Description.
Detached pavilion of two storeys and an attic storey on a composite ground plan with two corner risalits on the north side crowned by substantial dome roofs. The composite hipped roof is covered with damaged pantiles and crowned with roof finials at the ridge ends. The dome roofs are covered with slate and decorated with blind oeil-de-boeufs. The dome stands on a five-sided, tapering drum as a transition between the polygonal risalit and the circular dome in outline. The domes are closed by a blind lantern decorated all around with circles and covered by a second cupola crowned by a wrought-iron ornamental spire with weathervane.
The facades with cemented, partly finely-picked plinth possess the general characteristics of the pavilions as described in the complex description (national monument number 5638231), albeit that pavilion G is executed more richly with a projecting gutter line on the front and side facades on an arched frieze in which hard stone is used. The surrounding rain gutter is supported by more richly carved consoles and in the front facade larger, composite windows appear under basket-arch shaped fanlights.
The front facade has a mainly symmetrical layout with windows as described. The bevelled corners of the five-sided risalits are marked with red facing brick. In the risalits, in addition to the mentioned windows, there are also blind windows.
The right side facade has an almost symmetrical layout in five window axes. The wider central axis has an entrance on the ground storey with double door provided with glazing division. The door has a basket-arch shaped fanlight with an extra light strip between door and fanlight. The upper storey contains some blind windows. In front of the facade a wheelchair ramp and new step of three treads. The three right axes of the ground storey are executed in visibly newer brickwork. Here was presumably the connection of the now disappeared glazed connecting corridor.
The left side facade has on the left a flat-roofed originally extended projection over two storeys provided with small toilet windows in the ground storey. To the right of this windows as described.
The rear facade has on the right a mortared single-storey extension. The conservatory attached to the rear facade adjoins this extension. This presumably originally open veranda is presumably glazed in the first quarter of the twentieth century and consists of a construction with standposts on a hard stone balustrade. The veranda is largely closed with a lean-to roof, but entirely on the left and approximately in the middle flat-roofed. At the height of these flat roofs there are doors on the second storey.
The interior has retained the principal layout with a continuous central corridor in the width of the building, but is completely modernised as regards the finish of doors, floors and ceilings. In the basement various floors are still preserved laid with patterned tiles, further the hard stone staircase in the northwestern risalit and the wooden constructions of the high unplastered roof truss and dome roofs.
Valuation.
Pavilion G is of general, cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance as an essential component of the psychiatric institution St. Servatius which at the beginning of the twentieth century was built according to the pavilion system.
The building is of typological value in conjunction with the other preserved pavilions because through their location in the layout, their specific spatial arrangement and facade treatment they illustrate the categorical treatment according to social class and disorder that characterized institutions in this period. Pavilion G is of urban planning value within this because of its prominent location at the front of the layout and has a particular architectural appearance with, among other things, neo-baroque dome roofs, whereby the pavilion also possesses an architectural rarity value.
