The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

Parts of the LAYOUT of the grounds of the Sint-Annagesticht, created in the years 1907-1911 under the influence of the landscape style and mixed garden style and consisting of two main avenues and an oval lawn in front of the administrative building.

The layout originally consisted of two elongated north-south main avenues for the development of the grounds and various avenues and (winding) paths for the connection between the pavilions. Each pavilion was provided with its own patient garden with ornamental planting. The built-up part of the grounds was furthermore characterized by a strong park-like layout with tree planting and ornamental flower beds. This park-like character of the central part of the grounds is still recognizable in the presence of monumental, solitary trees. The institution was also rebuilt according to a pavilion model after the Second World War. As a result, the grounds are still characterized, albeit in a different form, by independent units with enclosed gardens.

Description.

The grounds of the Sint-Annagesticht are accessed by two north-south main axes. These avenues as well as the oval open lawn in front of the administrative building are included in the protected designation. The main avenue that runs from the Noordsingel to the northern boundary of the grounds has the character of a driveway up to the forecourt building. This access lane is now closed off from the Noordsingel. Originally the access was emphasized by a monumental entrance gate. The avenue has a slightly winding course and is for the most part planted with oak trees. At the northern boundary the access is marked by simple fencing, provided with presumably newly rebuilt brick fence pillars with saddle-back copings, and simple wrought-iron swing gates. The spacious lawn in front of the broad entrance building to the west of the access lane originally possessed a central section with ornamental planting and some garden ornaments. The oval lawn is still bordered by a curved avenue and is now provided with some solitary trees. The western avenue, planted mainly with lime trees, runs from the rear of the main building to the farmhouse in the north. Along this avenue there originally took place the connection between the farmhouse and the central kitchen via a narrow-gauge railway.

Valuation.

The avenues and the oval lawn are of general and cultural-historical importance because they are well-preserved and recognizable components of the original park-like layout of the psychiatric institution Sint-Anna which was built at the beginning of the twentieth century according to the pavilion system. Furthermore, because of the age and the ornamental qualities of the layout and planting. Finally, as an essential element within the pavilion system through which an important episode in the history of mental health care is expressed.
