The register's description

Waardering

STATIONSGEBOUW (A), gebouwd in 1886.

The MAIN BUILDING (A) is laid out on a rectangular plan and occupies a considerable part of the elongated platform. The main building is provided with a composite hipped roof, covered with concrete tiles and provided with continuous wooden gutters. The roof plane is interrupted by a higher-raised section counting three window bays with an autonomous hipped roof and a two-bay-wide transverse arm with between the end facades a gabled roof with a slightly higher ridge. The majority of the building is one and a half storeys high with an attic, whereby at the level of the floor the platform canopy here is executed as a lean-to roof, enclosing the entire building. Most of the window openings in the facades are terminated at the top by a segmental arch, with the arch infills in some places still filled with the original decorative brickwork or tilework. This decorative brickwork, which especially still occurs in the gable ends, is different in each arch field. The segmental arches are laid in contrasting brick colours and provided with ashlar-executed quoins and jamb stones equipped with diamond heads. Between the two continuous decorative bands which occur on the ground floor at the height of the segmental arches, there is decorative brickwork executed with the help of flemish bonds. Decorative brickwork with flemish bonds is also present in some blind recesses. Most of the window and door surrounds have chamfered sides with alternating yellow and flemish bond moulding stones. The facades are terminated with a brick frieze consisting of lattice work that is interrupted at regular intervals by ashlar consoles which carry the gutters. Only the facades in the aforementioned higher building volume are closed off with a semicircular arch frieze that carries the gutters. The building is provided with a continuous stone plinth and on the corners there are chamfered corner stones. The FRONT and REAR FACADES are almost identical to each other. The presence of a platform with an iron balustrade, resting on the canopy at the location of the transverse arm and higher building volume, forms the greatest difference. With exception of the two and two and a half storey building volumes, three window bays of the front facade each correspond with a roof dormer. Each of those roof dormers is provided with a wooden pilaster surround and wooden cheeks and is equipped with a pointed slated roof with an iron crest. The windows on the ground floor have mostly new infills. The first storey has two-light windows in the form of a horizontal rectangle in a segmental window. In the autonomous higher hipped roof with the ridge parallel to the track on the front and rear sides a Flemish gable, there are two chimneys on the left slope, one on the front slope, one on the right slope and a low one on the ridge. The higher chimneys are provided with surrounding bands and ornamental iron wall anchors. Only on the front side to the left of the transverse arm there is a high chimney and in the right slope of the composite roof. The front and rear side of the higher building section has a symmetrical, three-bay-wide, arrangement and is emphasised by a central risalit which at the gutter level transitions into a gable with a superstructure crowned by a decorative iron element. The triangular part of the gable is bounded by an applied climbing frieze. A part of the risalit below the gable is bounded by pilasters executed in various brick colours on worked consoles on which the building date is indicated. The middle gable opening on the ground floor was originally provided with a wide infill. The first storey has three rectangular window frames with a concluding segmental arch at the top. Two of the windows have a vertical central mullion with on either side a two-light sash window. The left window is executed as a casement window with a two-light fanlight. Above each of these windows there are two coupled rectangular small windows with an iron window grille and a semicircular closing with decorative brickwork in the arch field. Above the middle small windows there is between the arches a circular field with a filling of decorative brickwork. To the left and right of this there is a large ornamental wall anchor. The gable end is separated from the risalit by a profiled horizontal moulding. In the triangular gable plane above there is decorative brickwork in flemish bond and a blind recess with decorative brickwork and a semicircular closing. As for the rear, all windows have been renewed here as well, while on the first storey some windows have been altered. In the transverse arm there are on the first storey (renewed) casement windows under two-light fanlights. The arch field of the semicircular window has a modern infill. The gable end of the transverse arm is characterised by a climbing frieze, a horizontal dentil course and a superstructure with iron crest. This is moreover provided with a central pilaster with a supporting console on which a lion's head is depicted. The LEFT SIDE FACADE has on the ground floor a modern infill and nowadays serves as the main entrance to the ticket window section. The first storey has three two-light windows in the form of a horizontal rectangle. The RIGHT SIDE FACADE has at platform level three segmental blind recesses. The brickwork of the recesses is decorated with flemish bond motifs. The first storey has three windows as mentioned for the other facades.

The INTERIOR of the building has been renovated.

Valuation

STATION BUILDING (A), built in 1886.

- Of architectural historical significance as a good and intact example of a station building from the second half of the 19th century executed in predominantly neo-renaissance style. The building possesses aesthetic qualities such as good proportions and fine detailing.

- Of urban planning significance because of its location between two important tracks, on the route 's-Hertogenbosch - Utrecht and Tiel - Gorinchem. The building forms a relationship with the other components.

- Of cultural historical significance. As an example of a rarely occurring type of island station, it demonstrates a typological development of station construction in the Netherlands in the late 19th century.
