Inleiding
Fraai bronzen CHRISTUSBEELD uit 1926 vervaardigd door de Brusselse gieterij Verbeyst naar ontwerp van de Wageningse beeldhouwer AUGUST FALISE (1875-1936) geplaatst op een bakstenen sokkel. De sculptuur symboliseert het Heilig Hart. De reeds sinds het begin van het Christendom bestaande verering van Heilig Hart van Christus komt tot grote bloei na de visioenen van Margaretha Maria Alacoque in de zeventiende eeuw in Paray-le-Monial. In deze visioenen toont Christus zijn brandende hart, brandend van liefde voor de mensen, brandend van verlangen naar wederliefde. In 1856 kreeg de Heilig-Hartverering een eigen feestdag toegewezen en werd in 1899 nog eens gepromoot door paus Leo XIII. Menige parochie voelde dan ook de noodzaak om bij de kerk in een plantsoen een H.Hart op te richten. De steeds belangrijker worden H.Hartdevotie wordt ook steeds nauwer verbonden met het huisgezin waaraan het H.Hart wordt toegewijd. In het eerste kwart van de twintigste eeuw wordt het interieur van de katholieke woning dan ook vaak gekenmerkt door een H.Hartbeeld in de woonkamer. Bekende uitingen van de H.Hart devotie zijn ondermeer de Sacre Coeur (start bouw in 1876) in Parijs en de oprichting van Heilig Landstichting bij Nijmegen vanaf 1911. In 1928 wordt het H. Hartfeest een feest van de eerste rang. Dit gegeven is mogelijk ook mede de aanleiding geweest tot het oprichten van dit H.Hartbeeld.
Het beeld bevindt zich in de kern van Oosterbeek voor de aan noordzijde van de Utrechtseweg gelegen neo-gothische R.K. St. Bernulphuskerk met naastgelegen pastorie. Het beeld is georiënteerd op de Utrechtseweg. Oorspronkelijk stond het beeld in de as van de kerk, nu links daarvan. Omschrijving Het bronzen beeld is geplaatst op een door een halfsteens rollaag afgesloten vierkante bakstenen sokkel. In elke zijde bevindt zich een rechthoekig verdiept veld ingevuld met verticaal geplaatste strekkenlagen. Het bakstenen veld aan de voorzijde voorzien van een mozaïek uitgevoerd met een gele omlijsting waarbinnen een wit veld met de in zwart uitgevoerde tekst OOSTERBEEK / AAN / CHRISTUS / 1931. Tussen het woord Christus en het jaartal 1931 bevindt zich een in grijs en rood uitgevoerd CHIRO-teken. Dit mozaïek is een recent vervaardigde kopie van het origineel dat nog bewaard is gebleven. De bronzen sculptuur bestaat uit een halve bol voorzien van een fries met golfmotief en de volgende signaturen AUG. FALISE 1926 en VERBEYST FONDEUR BRUXELLES. De op deze bol staande Christus draagt een tot de voeten reikende mantel en houdt zijn armen gespreid. De handen zijn van stigmata voorzien. Op zijn borst bevindt zich een afbeelding van brandend hart tegen de achtergrond van een kruis als symbool van liefde. In het beeld bevinden zich twee kogelgaten uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

Fine bronze CHRIST STATUE made in 1926 by the Brussels foundry Verbeyst after a design by the Wageningen sculptor AUGUST FALISE (1875-1936) placed on a brick pedestal. Description The bronze statue is placed on a square brick pedestal closed off by a half-brick course. On each side there is a rectangular recessed field filled with vertically placed stretcher courses. The brick field on the front is provided with a mosaic executed with a yellow border within which a white field with the text in black OOSTERBEEK / AAN / CHRISTUS / 1931. Between the word Christus and the year 1931 there is a CHI-RHO sign executed in grey and red. This mosaic is a recently made copy of the original, which has been preserved. The bronze sculpture consists of a hemisphere provided with a frieze with wave motif and the following signatures AUG. FALISE 1926 and VERBEYST FONDEUR BRUXELLES. The Christ standing on this hemisphere wears a mantle reaching to the feet and holds his arms spread wide. The hands bear stigmata. On his chest is an image of a burning heart against the background of a cross as a symbol of love. The statue contains two bullet holes from the Second World War.
