Inleiding

Description
Complex component 27
Introduction
The unfinished H. HARTBASILIEK, consisting of an atrium and the beginnings of a transept arm and now the main building with exhibition space of the Bijbels Openluchtmuseum, was built in 1932-1936 on commission of the Heilig-Land-Stichting according to designs by architect J. Stuyt in collaboration with his son Giacomo.
Stuyt's first design for the H. Hartbasiliek dates from 1916 and concerns a pure central plan building based on a quatrefoil ground plan with corner towers and radiating chapels. The pyramidal composition of the building mass consists of a central dome, four half-domes above the transept arms and small half-domes above the radiating chapels. However, the first works do not take place until 1932, after a second (simplified) design was made by Stuyt in collaboration with his son Giacomo. The second design concerns a block-shaped cruciform basilica with central dome, four minaret-like corner towers, flat-roofed transept arms and an atrium. This design was only partially executed. In 1932, in the context of public works, groundwork was carried out and the foundations for the basilica were laid. A year later the atrium was completed and in 1935-1936 part of the adjoining transept arm was finished. After that, building activity came to a complete standstill. The modern extension for museum staff on the right side falls outside the protected area. The object is located in the southwestern part of the grounds of the Bijbels Openluchtmuseum, and is situated at the end of the Profetenlaan: the entrance to the museum. On the opposite side of this axis, on Nijmegen territory, lies the Neboklooster, also designed by Stuyt, dating from 1926-1928.
Description
The atrium is a courtyard surrounded on four sides by a flat-roofed gallery with round-arched arcade. The regularly and symmetrically arranged front facade has three high round-arched passages in the centre and two projecting towers with dome (copper covering) at the corners. The smaller round-arched openings of the corner towers are placed in corresponding spandrels. The gallery on the front has the same floor level as the courtyard. From this gallery, stairs lead to the higher-level remaining galleries. The side galleries are flanked on their outer sides by lower extensions with rooms. The gallery on the east side of the courtyard is incorporated into the beginning of the transept arm and is thus effectively a narthex. The atrium is built in yellow brick and laid in various bonds (including upright and Flemish bond). The columns and pillars of the arcade have recessed joints. The galleries are vaulted by spherical vaults in half-brick bond. The outer facades are finished with an outlined zigzag moulding.
The beginning of the transept arm adjoining the atrium concerns the substructure and two flanking corner towers. These components are built up to the height of the planned sloping gallery. This rectangular building volume has a width of five plus two half bays and is four bays deep. The regularly arranged facades of yellow brick are laid in Flemish bond and articulated by pilaster strips. The recessed wall openings are finished with round arches. On the atrium side, above the three main entrances is a concrete balcony on four sturdy consoles. The interior elevation consists of four-sided unreinforced pillars, wall arches and spherical vaults covered with white plaster.
Valuation
Unfinished H. HARTBASILIEK from 1932-1936.
- Of architectural-historical value as an essential component of a collection of buildings and objects in oriental style (in terms of design, use of materials and/or detailing) which together form the complex Heilig-Land-Stichting. The object stands out for the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design, such as a remarkable form, distinctive use of materials and careful detailing. The object is a fine example of the work that architect J. Stuyt created on commission of the Heilig-Land-Stichting. What was to have been the most important monument on the site remained unfinished. The object is nonetheless of particular significance for the oeuvre of architect J. Stuyt and forms a curiosity within national architectural history.
- Of urban planning value as an essential component of the complex Heilig-Land-Stichting which is of national significance in terms of cultural and architectural history. The object is of particular significance because of its striking setting, which is linked to the development of the complex and the layout of the circular route over the site.
- Of cultural-historical value as an essential component of the complex Heilig-Land-Stichting which forms a special and also rare expression of a religious development.
