Inleiding

Description
Complex component 22
Introduction
The PASTORIE was built in 1913-1915 on behalf of the Heilig-Land-Stichting according to the design of architect Jan Stuyt (assistant draughtsman J. Margry) in collaboration with artist Piet Gerrits. The final design dates from June 1913. On 7 September 1913 the contract was signed with contractor Jac. van Groenedaal from Breda for the construction of "church with towers and dome, sacristy, cloister and pastorie with museum, connecting corridors etc.". Until shortly after the Second World War, a museum gallery was housed in the single-storey north wing. Drawings and models by Piet Gerrits were exhibited here and furthermore " ... everything that familiarises us with everyday life particularly of Israel". The building is now used as a pastorie and parish house. Furthermore, a room on the upper floor is rented out. The pastorie is situated south of the Cenakelkerk to which it is connected by a corridor. Higher up on the east side of the pastorie is the Roman Catholic cemetery. On the west side of the pastorie, a few metres lower, a large forecourt has been laid out. Whereas the church and the pastorie originally still had a crucial significance within the objective and design of the Heilig-Land-Stichting, these buildings are now no longer part of the current Biblical Open-Air Museum but function as an independent parish complex.
Description
PASTORIE of one and two storeys with flat roofs on a U-shaped ground plan around a patio. The elongated eastern wing has mostly two storeys and a balcony on the patio side. The single-storey north wing and the one and two storey south wing embrace the patio which is closed off at the front by an arcade of three round arches. The white rendered brick facades are closed off under the roof overhang by a tile frieze of black and ochre-coloured tiles in block pattern. At regular intervals there is a white tile with the Jerusalem cross in red. The substantial overhang of the flat roofs rests on stepped brackets. The recessed wall openings are provided with a profiled rendered frame. The frames in combination with the windows set back in the wall form a striking facade relief with much light and shadow play. The majority of the windows consist of a tall rectangular wall opening with profiled frame in which four-, six- or twelve-pane casements and two-, four- or eight-pane fanlights are placed, all with sills. These windows are single or multiple in the predominantly asymmetrically laid out facades. On the ground floor the windows can be closed by (roller) shutters. In the middle of the patio a small fountain has been placed. In line with this is the main entrance. This entrance, as well as the former museum entrance in the north wing, consists of a double zinc-clad door, a fanlight and a rendered frame with architrave. The rear facade (east side) has a broad central projection with a double door in the middle. To the left of this projection is a service entrance in the first storey (panelled door with panes in the upper panels under a two-pane fanlight) and in the second storey a composite stairwell window. The SPATIAL LAYOUT is intact with the exception of the museum gallery. Behind the main entrance there is successively a large hall and the so-called Oriental Room. On the south side a corridor with stairwell adjoins the hall from which the meeting room, kitchen, scullery and upper floor are accessible. On the north side of the hall there is a connecting corridor to the church from which the former museum gallery (now fitted out as a residence), the library and archive room together with safe are accessible. The particularly rich INTERIOR, in which notably the meeting room and the so-called Oriental Room stand out, has been largely executed according to the design of P. Gerrits. The furnishing of the meeting room consists among other things of a parquet floor, brown and ochre-yellow painted walls, panelled doors, a metal fireplace from the Koninklijke Haardenfabriek E.M. Jaarsma (E.M.J. no.3), furniture and upholstery according to the design of P. Gerrits (for example a vicar's chair in Assyrian style and curtains). The Oriental Room has in the middle of the floor a square with inlay work of balata, depicting the four rivers of paradise Gihon, Phison, Tigris and Euphrates; ochre-yellow painted walls with red and blue horizontal bands and a flower frieze; a tableau with a representation of Mary (signed Piet Gerrits with the inscription: "...AND HE DWELT AMONG US ST JOHN 1-14"), a ceiling painted as a starry sky, a metal fireplace with a stone chimney-piece provided with a flame motif in relief, against the chimney a representation in relief of the appearance of Christ in a mandorla to Margaret Mary Alacoque. The hall and corridors have a white tile floor with geometric patterns of small squares in blue and black. The wooden staircase has two runs, an ornate newel post with grooves, baluster-shaped balusters and profiled handrails with curled ends. The kitchen has a white/blue chequered tile floor, a granite worktop with stone sink and panelled doors with oval door knobs, a servant's bell, a simple chimney-piece containing an AGA cooker, a kitchen cupboard with vitrine. In the scullery there is a similar worktop with water pump, a similar chimney-piece and a tile floor laid in a diamond pattern in the colours white, ochre and black. In the library the built-in cupboard wall and chimney-piece have been preserved.
Valuation PASTORIE from 1913-1915.
