Inleiding
Boven Hem is Maria in orantehouding afgebeeld. Boven hen zweven even zovele olielampjes.

Introduction
This CHURCH BUILDING, dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua but better known by the name "Cenakel Church", was built in 1913-1915 on commission of the Holy Land Foundation according to a design by J. Stuyt (assistant draughtsman J. Margry) in collaboration with artist P. Gerrits. In the period 1921-1932 the INTERIOR was furnished by P. Gerrits with mosaics and paintings. Initially Mgr. W. van de Ven commissioned architect Jos. Margry in view of his good contacts with the Rotterdam patron Grewen (founder of the St. Anthony Fund). After Margry's death, Suys, who had meanwhile been appointed building chaplain, appointed the experienced architect J. Stuyt as chief architect. The son of the deceased Margry assisted him as assistant draughtsman. After the definitive building site for the church became known in February 1913, the definitive design was ready in June 1913. On 7 September 1913 the contract was signed with contractor Jac. van Groenedaal from Breda for the construction of "church with towers and dome, sacristy, cloister and rectory with museum, connecting corridors etc.". Responsible for the reinforced concrete construction of the dome, with its exceptional cross-section of approximately 14.5 metres for that time, was engineer J. Wiebenga of the executing Breda firm Stulemeijer. The blessing of the church took place on 6 January 1915 and the consecration on 11 June 1915.
The Cenakel Church had essentially three functions. First, it was a pilgrimage church because the Cenakel (that is to say the hall of the Last Supper) was one of the places visited by the pilgrim on his journey through the Holy Land Foundation. Once the mosaics and paintings in the interior were completed, the emphasis in the circulation route shifted from the Last Supper to events that took place after the Resurrection. With a large influx of pilgrims, these could be addressed in the forecourt from the loggia in the front facade. Furthermore, continuous adoration of the Sacred Heart took place in this church in a large adoration chapel in accordance with the Cenakel Church of Jerusalem. This task was initially entrusted to the Daughters of the Heart of Jesus and from 1928 transferred to the sisters Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre. The Cenakel Church also served as the parish church for the faithful of Meerwijk. Nowadays the Cenakel Church fulfils only this latter function. The Cenakel Church is situated between the cloister "Casa Nova" and the rectory to which it is connected by corridors. Further up on the east side of the church is the Roman Catholic cemetery. A large forecourt has been laid out on the west side. Although these buildings originally had a crucial significance within the objectives and design of the Holy Land Foundation, they are now no longer part of the current Biblical Open-Air Museum and the church and rectory function as an independent parish complex.
Description
The Cenakel Church combines an axial layout with a nave conceived as a central structure and covered with a dome. From west to east the GROUND PLAN consists in succession of: a portal between two towers; a western arm with a chapel on either side; an octagonal nave with three circular chapels on the north and south sides; a rectangular choir flanked by ancillary spaces; a semicircular apse and curved sacristy around it.
The various spaces each have in the ELEVATION their own independent building volume. The bell towers of the west section are slender and tall and are terminated by angled tent roofs. The middle bay of the west section has three entrances, a loggia terminated with a rounded arch and a closing gently sloping gabled roof. The adjoining lower western arm also has a gabled roof with gentle slope. The flanking side chapels have flat ceilings. The nave comprises a cylindrical building body with drum and terminating dome vault. The lower side chapels, coupled in groups of three, are terminated by adjoining small domes. The middle bay adjoining the nave with gently sloping gabled roof is as high as the western arm. The higher-built choir is terminated by two interlocking gabled roofs. The semicircular apse is terminated by a calotte. The lower ancillary spaces of the choir and the sacristy surrounding the apse have flat roofs. The white rendered FACADES are provided with a black-painted plinth and are terminated by stepped corbelling. Only the rendered plinth of the towers is not plastered. At some locations a white tile with the Jerusalem Cross depicted in red has been applied in the plasterwork. Most of the windows are terminated with rounded arches and are executed singly, in two parts or three parts in various formats. Above the windows plaster eyebrows (possibly coupled) have been applied. In the left tower and in the adjoining bay there are some round windows. In the former sisters' sacristy a series of square windows (four-pane drop windows) have been installed. The coupled or uncoupled stone lintels are white-rendered. The three straight-edged entrances on the front have zinc-clad double doors. In the overlying loggia terminated with a rounded arch, a mosaic (P. Gerrits, 1919-1921) of the Last Supper has been applied against the rear wall. In the centre of the symmetrical composition stands Christ with bread in His hands. Above Him Mary is depicted in orans position. The twelve apostles are grouped around a table around Christ. Above them float an equal number of oil lamps. Far left Judas flees (the only one without a halo) the composition. His oil lamp is extinguished. At the level of the bell storey both towers are provided on all four sides with tall louvre openings (three coupled tall rounded-arch openings with copper-coloured painted zinc louvers). All sloping roofs and domes are covered with copper. The tent roofs of the towers and the domes are each crowned with a sphere with cross. On the reinforced concrete dome vault copper-covered scallops have been applied. In the well-preserved and exceptionally richly executed INTERIOR the number three plays an important role. Apart from three entrance doors, the passages to the nave also have three arches, as do the passages from the nave to three side chapels and the three passages from the choir to the chapel of perpetual adoration and the opposite wall. The windows are likewise each placed in series of three. The numerical symbolism refers to the New Jerusalem as mentioned in the Revelation of the Gospel of John. The decoration programme executed by P. Gerrits dates from two periods and is accordingly distinguishable in two styles. In the early work from the period 1915-1928 there is a striving towards unity in decoration and architecture. The ideas of the Beuron School play an important role here, which finds expression among other things in symmetrical compositional schemes and little depth effect. The mosaics created from 1923 onwards in among others the apse belong to this first period. Depicted is the "New Paradise" with angelic hosts on clouds beneath which are stylised palm trees and water with flowers and fish. Above the angels an Alpha and Omega motif has been applied and a cross with gems in a circle. All against a golden background. The paintings in Keimfarbe (casein paint), belonging to the second period, have been applied in the years 1928-1932 throughout the church with the exception of the apse and the first chapel to the right of the priest's choir. These paintings are executed in a narrative and more realistic manner full of movement and are reminiscent among others of Giotto for whom Gerrits had great admiration. The paintings tell the story of what happened after the death of Jesus with the spreading of the word of Jesus being central. Thus among others the following themes are depicted: the encounter of Mary Magdalene with the gardener at the empty tomb of Jesus, the Ascension, Saulus at the gate of Damascus, the address of Peter on the first Pentecost and the first Church Council. The dome is provided with a representation of the Holy Spirit as a dove surrounded by a radiant halo against the background of a starry sky. Almost all windows are to a greater or lesser extent furnished with coloured stained glass arranged in various geometric patterns. The floors of the church are laid in a checkerboard pattern with grey and red tiles. The former adoration chapel of the sisters on the north side of the choir was created in 1928 following the combination of three rooms. The chapel contains an altar with two fine wooden-carved angels from circa 1915. The altar was originally placed in the apse. The present high altar, positioned in the priest's choir, consists of a marble mensa on four small columns and a transenna at the front with above it a freely floating baldachin of polychrome wood with four crosses and a roundel with Holy Spirit dove. In the priest's choir stands a 2.70 metre high cross with corpus from circa 1920. The pew arrangement has been preserved. Among the preserved liturgical vessels and furnishings are included a monstrance and ciborium designed by Piet Gerrits.

Cultural-historical description
Introduction
The PALACE OF PILATE, the buildings located around the FORECOURT and the EASTERN ALLEY with a SCULPTURE of a sleeping woman were built in the 1930s-1940s on commission of the Holy Land Foundation according to a design by PIET GERRITS. Within the complex of the Holy Land Foundation, the buildings form part of the theme of the "Passion of Christ". The palace with forecourt and the alley situated behind it are located at the north-eastern edge of the devotional park. The palace was built to visualise the first station concerning the condemnation of Christ.
Only in 1940 were the polychrome concrete soldiers executed in high relief affixed to the rear walls of the galleries. Originally, in addition to these soldiers, free-standing figures were also placed in and in front of the palace depicting events, such as the mockery of Christ. The covered shopping street located on the south-western side of the square consists of a street with shops on both sides which are closed by wooden shutters. A drainage channel runs through the middle of the paving. In the street is a sculpture of a sleeping woman. The alley opens onto a small market square which forms the starting point of the "Oriental" or "Hellenistic" street laid out since 1970.
Description
The PALACE OF PILATE is built on a U-shaped plan and has one storey beneath a flat roof. The monumental building stands on a podium with a monumental staircase set back in the space between both wings. The blocky volumes of the building are provided with white-rendered plasterwork which is enlivened by parts of the front facade being rendered orange whilst two columns flanking the main entrance to the palace are painted red.
The FRONT FACADE of the palace is symmetrically arranged and has in the centre the entrance reached by means of the aforementioned staircase provided with rendered casing which is fitted with a double door. Above the entrance a Roman eagle is depicted. On either side of the entrance is a tall rectangular window which is provided with a window filling with Oriental motifs. The gallery in front of the entrance section is supported by two Tuscan columns. The facades of the wings situated along the gallery each possess a panel door. Both projecting wings are provided with galleries with round-arched arcades. Between the arches wooden railings are placed. Against the rear wall of the galleries are Roman soldiers executed in high relief and polychrome painted. The wings each possess on the upper storey two coupled windows. The REAR FACADE is accessible via two alleys located on either side of the building. The rear facade has on the ground floor several blind arcades and on the upper storey in the central section coupled blind windows placed at regular intervals. At the height of the wings are on the upper storey on the right four narrow tall windows fitted with four-light windows. At the far left are four narrow tall windows placed two by two with three-light windows of which the glass has disappeared. The INTERIOR of the palace has in a room to the left of the central entrance door against the rear wall an arched door recess in which a sculptural group of three polychrome painted Roman soldiers. Some freely positioned sculptures have disappeared. Patterns are scratched into the artificial stone floor tiles.
The EASTERN ALLEY is located on the south-western side of the square in front of the palace and is accessible from the square at two points via two entrance buildings with domes. The alley is built with residential houses and shops with annexed workspaces for craftspeople and has an irregular course. The alley is partly built over whereby the built-over sections are vaulted over with barrel vaults among others. The paving consists of an irregular pattern of cobblestones and natural stone slabs. The houses are, like many buildings on the site, built at three-quarters of the true size and give more of a picture of the building stock in early twentieth-century Palestine than of the building stock in the time of Jesus. The terraced blocky houses with flat roofs are provided with plasterwork whereby blocks of marl stone are often left exposed at the corners of the buildings. The SCULPTURE seated on the eastern side of the street on a stoep built from limestone blocks in front of one of the residential houses depicts a sleeping woman.
