Inleiding
Voormalig SCHOOLGEBOUW (5), genaamd Pastoor Hesseveldschool gebouwd als onderdeel van het COMPLEX Gerardus Majellakerk door de architect Jan Stuyt, 1926. De in oorsprong L.O. meisjesschool, in rationalistische trant, is aan de noord/noordoostzijde van het complex gesitueerd. Het hoekpand ligt binnen de rooilijnen van het rechthoekige terrein van de R.K enclave rond de kerk.
Omschrijving
Het langwerpige pand, dat evenwijdig aan de straat is gelegen, telt drie bouwlagen onder een omlopend schilddak waarin aan de voorzijde twee driehoekige dakkapellen (met halfronde raampjes) en aan de achterzijde, in het verlengde van de muurdammen, vier schoorstenen zijn aangebracht. De bakgoot is in het dakoverstek opgenomen dat aan de onderzijde middels latwerk decoratief is ingedeeld. De gevels zijn in baksteen (kruisverband) opgetrokken en ter hoogte van de plint voorzien van een omlopende sierband van rode baksteen voorafgegaan door een streklaag in rode baksteen. Een kleurrijk omlopend fries van siermetselwerk sluit de gevels af, maar wordt in de achterzijde door de vensters doorbroken. De vensters worden alle door een betonnen rand omlijst en rusten op natuurstenen lekdorpels.
De voorgevel (Obiplein) is symmetrisch ingedeeld, waarbij de vensters zijn geconcentreerd om het midden. De centraal geplaatste entree heeft in het portiek een smeedijzeren hek. Boven het portiek komen per verdieping acht naast elkaar geplaatste raampjes voor. Ter weerszijden van het middendeel is per verdieping een draairaam met bovenlicht aangebracht.
De linker zijgevel (Halmaheirastraat) is behoudens een venster, dat per verdieping rechts in de gevel is geplaatst, blind uitgevoerd. Ter hoogte van de verdiepingsvloeren is een gevelsteen geplaatst met: 'Ao.MCMXXVI.D' (1926) en boven in een ruitvormige steen: 'PASTOOR / HESSEVELD / L.O. / SCHOOL'.
De achtergevel heeft drie vensterassen van drie gekoppelde stolpramen met gedeeld bovenlicht. Alleen op de begane grond komt in de twee linker assen een deur voor in plaats van een stolpraam. De vensters op de derde bouwlaag onderbreken het fries.
Waardering
Het voormalig schoolgebouw uit 1926 is van algemeen belang wegens architectuur historische waarde. Voorts wegens cultuurhistorische waarde als illustratie van maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen binnen het katholicisme, waarbij kerkelijke- en onderwijsgebouwen werden geconcentreerd. Former SCHOOL BUILDING (5), named Pastoor Hesseveldschool built as part of the COMPLEX Gerardus Majellakerk by architect Jan Stuyt, 1926. Description
The elongated building, which is positioned parallel to the street, has three storeys under a continuous hipped roof with two triangular roof dormers (with semi-circular windows) on the front and four chimneys on the back, in line with the wall buttresses. The rainwater gutter is incorporated in the roof overhang which is decoratively divided at the underside by means of latticework. The facades are constructed in brick (Flemish bond) and at the level of the plinth are provided with a continuous ornamental band of red brick preceded by a stretcher course in red brick. A colourful continuous frieze of decorative brickwork closes off the facades, but is interrupted on the back side by the windows. All windows are framed by a concrete edge and rest on natural stone drip mouldings.
The front facade (Obiplein) is symmetrically arranged, with the windows concentrated around the middle. The centrally placed entrance has a wrought-iron gate in the porch. Above the porch, eight small windows placed side by side appear per storey. On either side of the middle section, a casement window with fanlight is installed per storey.
The left side facade (Halmaheirastraat) is executed blind, except for a window placed on the right in the facade per storey. At the level of the storey floors, a facade stone is placed with: 'Ao.MCMXXVI.D' (1926) and above in a diamond-shaped stone: 'PASTOOR / HESSEVELD / L.O. / SCHOOL'.
The back facade has three window bays of three coupled sash windows with shared fanlight. Only on the ground floor is there a door in the two left bays instead of a sash window. The windows on the third storey interrupt the frieze.
