Inleiding

Introduction

Former RECTORY (2), St. Vincentius House, built as part of the GERARDUS MAJELLA CHURCH COMPLEX by architect Jan Stuyt, 1926 in rationalist style.

The detached corner property with a remnant of the former garden wall is situated on the north/northwest side of the complex at the corner of Ambonstraat and Obiplein.

Description

The property has a composite ground plan, comprises three storeys under a composite flat roof. On the flat section of the roof fitted with a rain gutter, with several roof windows, two chimneys. The facades are built in brickwork (Flemish bond) and have sandstone bands running around the cross windows and a hardstone plinth. The transition to the upper floors is articulated by a sandstone band and a moulded cornice of the same material. The facades are terminated below the roof projection by a continuous decorative brickwork frieze in a zigzag pattern with blue tiles on a rendered ground. Below this is a moulded sandstone cornice. All windows are straight-topped. The window types present vary from simple sash windows (limited to the ground floor), hopper windows (most common) with divided fanlight designed as hopper, and three-part windows which occur only in the left side facade and as stairwell light in the front facade. All windows rest on natural stone lintels.

The five-bay wide front facade facing Obiplein has in the left part a recessed section with three paired stairwell windows with leaded glass and fanlights above the front door per floor. Together with the hardstone textless facade stones with moulded cornice at the height of floor levels, they mark the central axis. The shallow doorcase rests on hardstone jambs and matching threshold. The original panelled door fitted with a door light is flanked by a side light on each side. A band which as it were relieves the shallow portico, continues at the height of the alternating thresholds of the three paired simple sash windows in the left part. Only on the second floor are there two further windows of the standard type with hopper window. The projecting right part of the facade has two window axes with two paired simple windows on the ground floor and two hopper windows on each floor.

Adjoining the front facade, a brick garden wall runs parallel to the street, with seven round arches filled with decorative brickwork, which are covered by a double saddle back. The garden wall leads after a right angle by means of five arches to the church building behind. The left side facade contains three window axes and per floor a three-part window with the exception of the central axis where two hopper windows are placed on the first and third storeys.

The rear facade shows similarities to the front facade in window arrangement and in the projection of the facade, but is point-symmetrical. As on the front side, the left part of the facade recesses in the rear facade. The facade has three window axes of which the two left correspond with the window axes from the right part of the front facade. The third window axis, where the stairwell is located in the front facade, contains paired casement windows on the floors and one on the ground floor. The projecting right part has a door with ornamental bar and matching fanlight on the right. On the top floor are two hopper windows.

The right side facade is symmetrically arranged with a central axis containing a panelled door with fanlight and ornamental bar. On each floor there is a standard-type hopper window. To the left and right of this axis the same windows appear, except on the ground floor where there are two paired sash windows.

Valuation

The former St. Vincentius House from 1926 with remnant of the garden wall is of general importance for its architectural historical value. Also of cultural-historical value as an illustration of social developments within Catholicism, whereby church and school buildings are concentrated. Furthermore, ensemble value due to the architectural, spatial and historical-functional relationship with the other components of the Gerardus Majella complex.
