Inleiding

Introduction

Steel bascule bridge located near the Spagnumweg in Griendtsveen. The total of four bascule bridges were built around 1905. These served and serve for the passage of traffic in this village.

Description

Steel bascule bridge of the so-called type A1.

The leaf has a load-bearing structure of steel beams with a wooden deck laid over them.

The structure is no longer authentic while the leaf is also no longer movable. Originally two beams or railings ran alongside the leaf which moved with the leaf. With a renovation this beam was replaced by a small fence work for safety reasons. The leaf rotates in two forged eyes which are attached to the underside of the bascule posts.

The bascule bridge is built according to the Amsterdam type. The bascule gate consists of two freestanding bascule posts which are connected to each other only by two tie rods. These tie rods are bent towards each other in the middle and coupled together. Each of the two bascule posts is built up from two U-profiles which are back-to-back with the web against the flanges of an I-profile riveted together. On top of the posts is a steel cap in the form of a tent roof. The bascule posts are supported by each two braces of round steel in longitudinal direction and one in transverse direction.

The balance is built up from two balance beams with between them a structure of rails and diagonals. Both beams are executed as I-profile, as well as the diagonals and rails between them which function as a kind of counterweight. A ballast box is absent, so the bridge will not be entirely balanced. Also at the location of the pivot points an I-profile is present as a transverse rail. Above the leaf between the beams a cross-bracing is applied, while both ends of the beams are connected by a tube profile or round iron. The balance rotates between the two bascule posts. From the end of both beams a chain runs to the leaf. On both beams a tie structure is mounted, with at the location of the pivot points two struts in inverted V-form. The tie rods of this structure consist partly of round steel. The ends consist of two flat steel profiles which fork around the beam and are hinged attached to it. Above the leaf between the round steel and the fork a tensioning device or turnbuckle is located. The bridges are moved by means of a steel winch mechanism. This winch is driven by hand by means of a crank. From the winch a chain runs horizontally to the underside of one of the bascule posts and from there via a pulley to a second pulley attached to the end of the balance at the base.

Via this pulley the chain runs back to the underside of the bascule post where it is secured. The speed of movement is thereby halved, as well as the force required to turn the crank.

Valuation

The bascule bridge is important for the development of the peat village Griendtsveen. The bridge is also important for the typological development of bascule bridges and for the history of construction technology. The bridge possesses high-quality aesthetic qualities.

The bridge is part of the peat village Griendtsveen of which the cultural-historical value is considerable. The bridge possesses in terms of construction technology a intact and recognizable structure. In terms of design such a bridge does not exist elsewhere in the Netherlands. On the basis of this value the bascule bridge at the Kanaalweg in Griendtsveen is of general importance.
