Inleiding

Description
Introduction
On the edge of the old village centre of Weurt, in a very striking location on the south side of Pastoor van der Marckstraat, the main street of the village, stands the VILLA "ROOZENBURG", currently in use as a residential house. The villa has the form of a T-shaped farmhouse and, given the materials used, was built around 1875. The influential Braam family is named as the client. The villa has characteristics of the eclectic style in which neoclassical elements predominate. In 1949 the villa underwent renovation on the first storey of the front section. The ceiling was lowered. As a result, the window openings in three gables at the top were filled with a strip of ornamental brickwork. The interior was also adapted. In particular, the large room on the north-west side was given an interior in the style of the Delft School with a fireplace with chimney in fine brickwork, wainscoting and associated original fixed furniture. The villa was restored in the mid-1980s by architect D. Wijma from Velp.
Surrounding the villa, and in particular between Pastoor van der Marckstraat and the building, there is a substantial garden. The symmetrically laid out garden has a gravel path in front of the front section, surrounded by lawns. The gravel path leads to a roundel with planting borders which in turn connect to a gravel path around the house. Along the avenue there are conifers clipped into conical form and on the street side there is a row of monumental chestnuts and a weeping beech. Unfortunately, the old wrought-iron garden gate with gate is now missing from the street. Behind the house there are somewhat younger trees, including many chestnuts. The garden is further enclosed by hedges on the east, west and south sides.
Description
The residential house is built as a substantial block-shaped VILLA with two storeys and a hipped roof with four octagonal chimneys, with matching soot caps, at the corners of the flat roof. The roof is covered with dampened Roman tiles which are not the original roof covering. In the roof sections above the north, east and west gables there is a symmetrically placed roof dormer with a segmental arch-shaped zinc roof, matching cheeks and a curved casement window. The roof dormer in the front roof section also has wooden scroll-shaped claw pieces and in the arch above the window a baroque scrolled pediment.
Against the rear gable of the villa stands a single-storey rear building on a rectangular ground plan with a gabled roof with a half-hipped end above the rear gable, roof gutters and a (non-original) roof covering consisting of dampened improved Dutch tiles. The front section is partially cellar-vaulted (north-west side). The building has a grey-painted, rendered plinth and brick gables in bond alternated by rendered, broken white-painted decorative elements (corner pilasters, frieze of the main cornice, central risalite and moulded window surrounds). The plinth is finished with a drip moulding, connected to the rendered drip edges under the window openings of the ground floor. The window openings and door openings are closed by slightly curved segmental arches. At the rear building, the (stone) segmental arches are mortared. At the front section, the segmental arches are incorporated in a moulded, rendered window surround with a baroque scrolled pediment at the apex. On the upper floor of the front section, a rendered, grey-painted drip moulding is also incorporated in the gable. At the location of the window openings, the rendered drip moulding also serves as a drip edge.
The five-bay FRONT GABLE (north gable) has a symmetrical arrangement with a rendered corner pilaster on the gable corners. Per storey there is decoration with a rectangular casement that is ornamented at the top with neo-baroque leaf decoration. In the central axis there is a rendered risalite with portico and balcony and in the frieze the name "ROOZENBURG" is painted on a panel with some kind of mirror or shouldered arch closure on both corners. In the portico there is a finely worked panel door with a frame with cast-iron door grille and a single-pane curved fanlight with leaded glass. The portico has a bead moulding with a richly executed scrolled pediment with leafwork in the arch. On both sides of the risalite there are two segmental arch windows with moulded rendered surrounds and keystone with flower decoration, crowned by a kind of cartouche on the arch, glazing bars with bead moulding and T-sash window with leaded glass in the fanlight. The window openings were lowered in 1949 by the installation of an arch drum with recessed ornamental brickwork. Above the portico in the central risalite is a balcony on richly worked consoles with scrolls, leafwork and a female head. The underside of the balcony consists of a panel with bead elements in a diamond pattern. The balcony floor has a richly moulded wooden surround in the form of a classical main cornice. The balcony railings are of wrought iron with twisted balusters and cast-iron components with scrolls and leafwork. On the balcony are double inward-opening balcony doors with panel and frame with a curved fanlight with leaded glass. The balcony door glazing bars have a bead moulding and are placed in a segmental arch recess with moulded surround and scrolled pediment. On the floor on both sides of the risalite there are two window openings of the same type as on the first storey. However, here the openings are not lowered and the T-sash windows still have curved fanlights with leaded glass. The arch has a scrolled pediment instead of a keystone with cartouche. The gable is finished with a classical main cornice, consisting of a moulded architrave, rendered frieze with rectangular panels, alternated by classical consoles, which support the wooden, moulded cornice of the rainwater gutter. The entire main cornice is detailed at the location of the risalite and corner pilasters.
The SIDE GABLES (east and west gable) of the front section are three-bay with the same elements as in the front gable (corner pilasters, plinth with drip moulding, drip moulding on the floor, rendered moulded window surrounds and classical main cornice with panels and consoles in the frieze). All windows have scrolled pediments in the arch. The window openings on the ground floor and on the first floor in the central axis are filled with brick (blind execution). On both gables, the left axis on the ground floor and on the first floor has a window opening with T-sash window with a fanlight with leaded glass. On the RIGHT SIDE GABLE (west gable), the window opening on the ground floor is provided with a mortared arch drum as also in the front gable. The remaining window openings are still authentic. Both side gables also have a rectangular garden door opening broken through in 1949 on the right axis of the ground floor with rendered flat surround. Double outward-opening garden doors with leaded glass frames and double fanlight with leaded glass have been fitted in the gable opening. The fanlights of the doors in the right side gable are curved. The window opening on the first floor in the right axis has a T-sash window with curved fanlight with leaded glass. The REAR GABLE (south gable) of the front section is completely blind-executed on both sides above the adjoining roof of the rear building (with the exception of a small rectangular window opening above the junction of the eastern roof section of the rear building). Corner pilasters are absent and below the main cornice there are wall anchors. The REAR BUILDING has a rendered plinth with drip moulding and brick gables in bond. In the SIDE GABLES (east and west gable) there are wall anchors below the roof gutter. In both side gables there are two window openings, closed by mortared (stone) segmental arches with T-sash windows with curved fanlights with leaded glass. The garage door opening on the right in the REAR GABLE (south gable) was broken through later and is therefore not original. In the axis of the rear gable there is a door opening on the ground floor which is closed by a mortared (stone) segmental arch and contains a non-original door and a fanlight with leaded glass. On the attic floor there is a window opening which is closed by a mortared (stone) segmental arch and provided with a casement window. The mortared drip edge is rendered and painted white.
The layout of the building is still original. To the east and west of the broad corridor that runs through the front section to the rear building are the various rooms. In the INTERIOR of the house there are, among other things, still old panel doors with interior door frames, a stairwell with staircase, worked staircase elements from the building period. In the front section on the ground floor in the large room on the north-west side there is an interior in the style of the Delft School with wooden wainscoting, a main and minor beam ceiling with key pieces under the main beams, a mortared fireplace with chimney and original fixed furniture associated with the interior. The cellar located on the north-west side under the front section has barrel vaults and consists of two separate rooms.
Valuation
VILLA "ROOZENBURG" built around 1875 in an eclectic style with various neoclassical elements.
- Of architectural historical value as a good and intact example of a (village) villa with a very striking, stately and richly detailed front section. The building is also a good example of a rurally located townhouse in which urban architecture is combined with a customary layout for a (T-) farmhouse. The villa possesses various valuable and characteristic details (including a balcony with richly worked consoles). The villa possesses an interesting, legible building history with clear elements of the 1949 renovation. Of great importance for the monumental appearance of the villa are the large trees and the stately laid out garden.
- Of urban planning value due to the location of the villa on the edge of the historic village centre of Weurt on the main street of the village. Through the monumental design of the front section, the image of the surroundings is largely determined. The villa is one of the best known and most character-defining buildings of the old village centre. The villa "ROOZENBURG" is therefore also of importance for the historic village structure that developed along an old exit road to the city of Nijmegen.
- Of cultural historical value as a typical example of a (village) villa which, through the presence of a business section, has the appearance of a large, richly designed (T-) farmhouse but was primarily not of agricultural function. Villa "ROOZENBURG" was built at the instigation of the influential Braam family which, like, for example, the brick manufacturers Burgers, played a major role in the economic and social life of the local community and the immediate surroundings.
