Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Just outside the village of Weurt lies a former DIKE MAGAZINE that was built between 1900 - 1910 in a traditional style. The former dike magazine now serves as a studio but is still owned by the polder district Groot Maas en Waal. The dike magazine was built for the storage of material and equipment for carrying out maintenance to the dike in the area south of the Waal. The building is situated on the inner side of the dike, partly against the dike slope and partly on the dike at the junction of Dijkstraat with the Dijk to the northeast of the R.K. Sint Andreaskerk of Weurt. In the municipality of Beuningen there are three other dike magazines downstream (at Beuningen, Ewijk and Winssen) along the Waal which together with this dike magazine are characteristic of the historical river landscape.
Description
The former DIKE MAGAZINE has a rectangular ground plan with two storeys on a basement. This basement is partly sunken into the dike body. For half its length the building stands at the level of the road running over the dike. For the other half the building lies against the dike slope. The dike magazine has a gabled roof with overhang on continuous beams with wooden wind braces. The roof is covered with smoke-fired roof tiles and partly with red roof tiles. The facades are built up in dark red brick (waal format) in cross bond with blocklike decorations on the corners (consisting of five brick courses) in black-grey ornamental brick and below the overhanging roof of the gable ends a climbing frieze of blocks in black-grey ornamental brick. Further, yellow ornamental brick is applied as banding to decorate the facade surfaces in the first storey just above the sills of the window openings. At the height of the transition between the first and second storey, a double banding (yellow ornamental brick / three courses of masonry / yellow ornamental brick) is present in all facade surfaces. The segment arches of the two door openings in the gable ends of the first storey are also formed in the middle with yellow ornamental brick as an imitation keystone. This also applies to the segment arches of the window openings in the side facades in the first storey. The yellow ornamental brick is finally applied as a kind of keystone in the frame of the oeil de boeuf (oculus) (below - above / left - right) in the gable ends. The frame of the oculus is further executed in black-grey ornamental brick. The doors, windows and louvre shutters are painted dark green.
Both gable ends (EAST and WEST FACADE) have the same layout. In the first storey there is a broad arched door opening, closed by a brick-and-a-half segment arch, built up from alternating dark red brick and black-grey ornamental brick with a higher imitation keystone consisting of five vertical courses of yellow ornamental brick (two-and-a-half bricks high). In this imitation keystone there is a contemporary wall anchor replacing an ornamented cast-iron wall anchor. In the edge joints there are hardstone thumb blocks. The arched double doors are secured with a brick band as a sill. In the centre of this sill there is a hardstone block. In the second storey there is a window opening closed by a segment arch. In the left edge joint there are hardstone thumb blocks from which the arched, secured shutter is hung. In both gable ends there is a blind oeil de boeuf (oculus) with a circular half-brick roll in black-grey ornamental brick with four, two-brick-wide imitation keystones in yellow ornamental brick. The layout of both side facades (SOUTH and NORTH FACADE) is approximately the same. The south facade is however higher because it contains the basement in which four strong cruciform wrought-iron anchors are attached which anchor the dike magazine to the dike body. This prevents the building from sliding down the sloping dike body. Both the first and second storeys have three arched window openings with brick weathered sills in both facades. These window openings are closed by brick-and-a-half segment arches. In the first storey these are provided in the middle of the segment arch with an imitation keystone built up from yellow ornamental bricks. This imitation keystone is three stretchers high and five courses wide. In these imitation keystones there are ornamented cast-iron wall anchors (south facade). These anchors were later replaced in the north facade by contemporary wall anchors. The window openings in the first storey are closed by wooden louvre shutters for ventilation. The window openings in the second storey are provided with arched six-pane iron windows.
The INTERIOR is partly original and partly adapted to the current function of the building as a studio.
Valuation
Former DIKE MAGAZINE from ca. 1900 - 1910.
- Of architectural historical value as a good and reasonably intact example of a dike magazine from the early 20th century. A dike magazine was built for the purposes of dike maintenance. In contrast to other, purely functionally designed dike magazines, the design of this dike magazine can be called rich. This is evident from the use of ornamental masonry in various colours of ornamental brick.
- Of urban planning / landscape value as part of the buildings on the dike and because of the location of the dike magazine on the inner side of the dike on the dike to the northwest of the R.K. Sint Andreaskerk. The dike magazine forms an indispensable part of the historical river landscape and through its clear building mass and rich design fits well with the image of the river landscape formed by the river Waal with its floodplains, dikes, dike vegetation and buildings.
- Of cultural historical value as a good example of the functional and typological development of the dike magazine. The building is also important because of its appearance and designation as a dike magazine, a building of industry and technology. Dike magazines, dikes, pumping stations and locks play an important role in the history of the river area and form a symbol of the continuous struggle against water.
