Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
MANSION with IRON RAILING enclosing front and side garden, located at the corner of Fransestraat and St. Annastraat. The property is situated on Fransestraat, but has its principal facade on St. Annastraat. This facade will therefore be described as the front facade.
The property was built as a dwelling house, dates from circa 1900 and is built in the neo-Renaissance style. It was presumably built at the same time as the three adjacent properties on St. Annastraat, which show similarities in architecture and detailing.
Description
The brick property, laid in running bond, is constructed on a rectangular ground plan and comprises three storeys under a flat roof. The uppermost storey has on the front and left side a steeply sloping roof section covered with suppressed Hamerpannen with flat edge. The facades are provided with plastered ashlar bands, heavy cornice bands corner blocks and starter and closing stones. Front and left side facade have a plastered plinth with false joints in the front facade and the risalit in the left side facade. The leaded glass in the windows contains yellow, green and colourless glass, partly executed in cathedral glass.
The FRONT FACADE is dominated on the left by a tall wooden bay window, which ends in a tent roof with curved roof planes, covered with slate, partly in rens or scalloped covering, partly in Meuse covering. The ridge is provided with a bell turret (?). The bay window is provided with richly detailed woodcarving. The windows on the ground floor are fitted with leaded glass. The front and side planes of the tent roof contain a roof dormer with an adjoined saddle roof. To the right of the bay window, the facade contains on both the ground floor and first floor two single-pane sash windows. On the ground floor the fanlights are fitted with leaded glass; on the first floor both the lower and upper windows are fitted. The lower windows on the first floor contain in the middle a rectangular stained-glass medallion with on the left a large sailing ship and on the right a landscape with Dutch flag. The facade is finished with a cornice, with a gutter behind the cornice. The roof plane above the windows contains a roof dormer with tent roof with curved roof planes and broad cheeks.
The LEFT SIDE FACADE contains in the middle a risalit, which projects through the gutter and ends in an adjoined gable. The gable has a plastered finish with curved pediment with a ball on top. Behind the risalit is the staircase. The risalit contains from bottom to top a ball window, a two-light window, a T-window with semi-circular fanlight and at the top a round blind window. The two-light window is fitted with leaded glass. The lower windows contain in the middle a rectangular stained-glass medallion with on the left a landscape with cattle and on the right an (as yet unknown or entirely fanciful) city gate. The semi-circular fanlight is also fitted with leaded glass. The right part of the facade contains on the ground floor on the left the entrance with altered door and semi-circular fanlight and on the right a single-pane sash window; the first floor has two single-pane sash windows. The roof plane above the right window contains a roof dormer with tent roof with curved roof planes and broad cheeks.
The left part of the facade contains a blind window and two small windows on the ground floor and a single-pane sash window and one small window on the first floor.
Of the REAR FACADE the right part projects far forward. Here on the ground floor is a broad opening, presumably from a former garage. The first and second floors each contain a 2-pane cross window with single-pane fanlight. On the left, the facade contains on the ground floor a conservatory with multi-pane fanlights fitted with yellow cathedral glass. Above the conservatory a balcony, accessible via a 2-pane cross door with divided fanlight. The second floor has a 2-pane cross window with single-pane fanlight.
The INTERIOR contains rich stucco ceilings with central and corner ornaments. The hall contains on the walls panels with border mouldings and corner ornaments. The passage from hall to staircase hall is provided with ornamental stuccowork. The staircase contains turned wooden stairs and matching balusters. Further there are panelled doors with moulded frames, sliding doors between front and rear rooms and on the ground floor a black marble fireplace with green and white veined inlay pieces.
The ironwork around the front and side garden is original in the location of the side garden. Around the front garden it has been renewed and is not entirely identical to the original ironwork.
