Description of component 2: HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the historical country estate Broekhuizen.

Park of considerable size, whose character is determined by the layout begun towards the end of the eighteenth century under the direction of J.G. Michael, but largely executed by J.D. Zocher senior and J.D. Zocher junior and completed before 1821 in mature landscape style, in which as the principal element of the preceding formal layout a large part of the former driveway in the axis of the main building, now the central vista avenue, is incorporated.

The composition of the park, which since the completion of the layout has undergone no essential changes, is determined on the one hand by the direction of the land division with respect to the Langbroekerwetering and on the other hand by the oblique boundary with respect to this direction between the former jurisdictions of Darthuizen and Leersum.

The first-mentioned direction is followed by the main axis running across the central vista avenue and the main building, along which four open spaces visualised by enclosing woods are arranged one behind the other, respectively separated by coulisses at the places where said woods approach each other most closely and by the main building between the second and third space; to the north the first space narrows into the central vista avenue.

With the second direction, namely that of the aforementioned old boundary between Darthuizen and Leersum, the eastern boundary of the park coincides over a considerable length; parallel to this is the second important axis in the composition arranged over a body of water, which largely fills the space behind the main building and - in an extension of the park - to the north accentuates a sightline to the house Bremweg 10.

The park contains the following elements of historical layout, the enumeration of which begins on the northeast side:

I. The central VISTA AVENUE (former driveway); Avenue laid out in the axis of the main building before 1775, shortened to its present length during the conversion of the park to landscape style (from the Rijksstraatweg to the ha-ha mentioned under III. sub a), at the same time closed off by an entrance gate on the southwest side of the Middenweg/Bremweg and subsequently disused as a driveway within said gate. A portion of the avenue is paved with clinkers.

The avenue is provided in layout with a planting of beeches (Fagus sylvatica) in square formation and - as regards the portion within the mentioned gate - in three rows on either side; to the north of the gate the planting on the west side is reduced to two rows and on the east side the planting of three rows is partly reduced to one.

II. The AVENUE, formed by the section of the Broekhuizerlaan that connects the Bremweg via a bridge (see III. sub c) with the Langbroekerweg. The straight section of this avenue running parallel with the vista avenue is a remnant from the time of the formal layout in the eighteenth century. The avenue in its present form was laid out in the early nineteenth century with a planting of beeches (Fagus sylvatica) interrupted in width by the vista mentioned under III. sub c (Note that this planting is now not present in the vicinity of the aforementioned interruption).

III. The four open spaces mentioned in the introduction, namely:

a. The DEER PARK. This space, laid out as pasture with undulating, gently hilly surface, opens out to the northeast into the vista avenue, is bounded on the northwest and south by woods (see X. sub a and b), passes to the southwest into the lawn described below sub b and continues to the southeast across the boundary of the park marked by a ditch into the pastures to the south and southwest of the farmstead Schevickhoven, thereby originally offering a view of the funerary monument of the family Van Nellesteyn built in 1819 on the Donderberg (Note that this view is now blocked by undergrowth).

The deer park, where ha-has form part of the northeast and southwest ends, contains as an essential part of the composition a seepage ditch (see IX. sub a), a path (XI. sub d) and furnishings consisting of a number of tree groups - including one composed of beeches (Fagus sylvatica) - and a number of solitary trees - mainly beeches including a copper beech (Fagus sylvatica "Atropunicea") -. Originally there was also a deer shelter, which was shaped like a log cabin, and was destroyed by fire.

b. The so-called LAWN, located to the southwest of the deer park and adjoining it. This space, laid out largely as grassland, extends to the southwest before the main building and to the north of it, as part of a vista extending to the shore of the body of water (see IX. sub b); to the southeast the ground rises to a mound thrown up against the lower storey of the orangery, which in appearance supports the upper storey of it. For the rest the space is bounded by wooded areas (see X. sub a and b).

The lawn contains paths and footpaths (XI. sub c and f), and furnishings consisting of two solitary trees - respectively a copper and a common beech (Fagus sylvatica "Atropunicea" and Fagus sylvatica) - a rhododendron copse (genus Rhododendron) against the southern edge and - before the main building - a formal ornamental element in the form of a palmette added in 1908 by Hugo A.C. Poortman, laid out in box (Buxus sempervirens) (Note that the aforementioned common beech is now replaced by an oak).

c. The so-called POND SPACE. The space behind the main building, which extends to and passes into the round pasture described sub d.

This space, which - because it is largely occupied by the body of water (IX. sub b) - is here designated by the name "pond space", is provided with extensions to the northwest and north, forming respectively vistas over the Langbroekerweg towards the Traay and over the Broekhuizerlaan towards the house Bremweg 10.

Of these extensions the first originally contained, and the second still contains, brook-like sections of the body of water. The space is bounded by wooded areas (X. sub c, d and e), which follow the shores of the body of water, except to the southeast where they leave open a section planted with grass in layout, while also behind the main building at the width of the latter in layout a grassland extends along the pond shore.

The open terrain along the southeastern pond shore is - like the vista to the northwest - furnished in layout with a number of solitary trees and tree groups, including many beeches (Fagus sylvatica) and some copper beeches (Fagus sylvatica "Atropunicea"). In the vista a rhododendron copse (genus Rhododendron) is laid out. The northern vista in the form of a "brookdal" contains a brick arch bridge (over the "brook"), over which the Broekhuizerlaan is led (Note that both vistas are now partly blocked by planting and undergrowth, the open eastern shore of the body of water has partly become overgrown with undergrowth and some solitary trees are dead or no longer present).

d. The so-called ROUND PASTURE, located to the southwest of the pond space, is one of the oldest components of the original layout in landscape style. The round pasture is laid out in the form of a pasture with undulating edges, surrounded by coppice sections (X. sub f), interrupted for a vista towards a next space (VIII. sub a), and by part of the wood mentioned under X. sub e. The mentioned coppice sections are accompanied on the inside by a watercourse (IX. sub d).

The pasture is furnished in layout along the southwestern edge with two solitary horse chestnuts (Aesculus hippocastanum).

IV. The former KITCHEN GARDEN AND ORCHARD belonging to the earlier formal layout. The kitchen garden/orchard is bounded on the southeast and southwest sides by a moat (see IX. sub c) and on the northwest over a considerable length by a brick garden wall (see component 5 for this).

The terrain also contains as a remnant of the old layout a round pond created at a former path crossing.

V. The apparently also belonging to the earlier formal layout former SECOND ORCHARD, a narrow, elongated rectangular strip of ground, located between the eastern boundary of the park and a path (VI).

This former orchard contains no details of old layout anymore.

VI. A PATH, planted on one side with a row of oaks (Quercus robur), located between the kitchen garden and the orchards (see IV. and V.) and the wood mentioned under X. sub d.

VII. An AVENUE, standing perpendicular to the path described under VI. This avenue, which flanks the south side of the kitchen garden/orchard, is planted in layout with two rows of beeches (Fagus sylvatica) (Note that the planting of this avenue is now largely disappeared).

VIII. An area playing a determining role in the composition of the park, located between the terrain enumerated so far and the Gooyerdijk, consisting of the following components:

a. An OPEN SPACE located to the southwest of the round pasture (see III.d.) in the form of a pasture bounded in a straight line according to the land division along the Langbroekerwetering.

This space, which is given form by avenues and a coppice strip (see X. sub g, h and i), serves as an additional space in the sightline that runs over the pond space (see III.c.) and the round pasture.

b. An OPEN SPACE located to the southeast of the round pasture in the form of a pasture, which is surrounded by an avenue and coppice sections (see X. sub i and j) and which - to the length of the connection to the landscape-style laid out park components - is bounded by a winding line, but for the rest by the straight lines of the land division along the Langbroekerwetering.

This pasture serves together with the surrounding woods as a scene of a view from the pond space and the round pasture and is furnished in this connection with some solitary trees and tree groups.

IX. The park contains, apart from the drainage ditches present for water management reasons, the following watercourses and water bodies playing a role in the composition:

a. In the deer park (see III.a.), a broad SEEPAGE DITCH which - laid in a gentle S-curve - follows a "brookdale" and passes to the southwest on the one hand into the former ha-ha and on the other into a lateral arm of a ditch (see III. sub a) along the boundary of the park.

b. The LARGE BODY OF WATER which, "issuing" from the northern extension of the pond space (see III.c.), flows under the bridge also mentioned there, widens pond-like as background to the extension of the lawn (see III.b.) and after a narrowing at the height of one of the wooden bridges mentioned under XI. sub g widens to a large pond with undulating shorelines, in the northwestern part provided with two islands, in order - narrowed to "river" - to turn towards and end in the open space, where it connects on the one hand with the lock system present there and on the other with the moat described sub c.

The pond shore was altered in form around 1900 - to the width of the central risalit of the main building - in a formal sense in connection with the laying out of a formal garden layout between the main building and the pond.

c. The MOAT lying along the southern and eastern and a small part of the western side of the kitchen garden/orchard, which is interrupted in the east by a broad dam.

d. The round pasture (see III.d.) is surrounded along the inner edge by a DITCH, which widens pond-like at the height of the vista towards the open space (VIII. sub a).

e. A WATERCOURSE, which follows the outside of the coppice bank enclosing the southeast and southwest sides of the round pasture, subsequently - at the height of the vista towards the open space (VIII. sub a) - widens pond-like and as a winding "river" separates the coppice mentioned under X. sub f and g in order - outside the park - to continue as a drainage ditch running parallel with the Gooyerdijk.

X. The park contains the following space-defining woods and wooded areas:

a. The northwestern boundary of the brookdale (see III.c.) and the western edge of the deer park and lawn (see III.a. and b.) is formed in layout by a WOOD, which - as regards the part belonging to the protected layout - continues beyond the deer park between the vista avenue and Broekhuizerlaan (see I. and II.) to the Bremweg and terminates in a crescent-shaped section to the south of the vista avenue.

At the northern end of the deer park this wood is laid out as a transparent beech wood (Fagus sylvatica). The wood contains the driveways mentioned under XI. sub a and b.

b. The eastern boundary of the adjoining parts of the deer park and lawn is formed in layout by a WOODED AREA, which on the south side extends to the orangery, the grounds beyond it and the second orchard (see V.); the northern half of the wooded area is contained between the mentioned seepage ditch and its lateral arm (IX. sub a).

The wooded area contains parts of the paths and footpaths mentioned under XI. sub c and d.

c. A WOODED AREA, which separates the western and northern extensions of the pond space (see III.c.) from each other. This wooded area extends from the main building to the Broekhuizerlaan; it is interrupted by the - spanned by a wooden bridge - narrowing in the large body of water (see IX.b.).

The edge of this wooded area is accentuated in layout by four copper beeches (Fagus sylvatica "Atropunicea"), two by two placed on either side of the entrances to the aforementioned bridge (Note that only two of the four copper beeches are now present).

The wooded area contains a small part of the round walk around the pond mentioned under XI. sub g.

d. The southern boundary of the lawn, the southeastern edge of the pond space and the northern boundary of the open space (VIII. sub b) are formed by a WOOD, which extends behind the orangery to the path described under VI.

The wood contains the paths mentioned under XI. sub h and part of the paths mentioned under XI. sub f and g.

e. The northwestern boundary of the pond space to the southwest of the western vista is formed by a WOOD, of which the southwestern end forms part of the northwestern edge of the round pasture (see III.d.). To the northwest this wood borders on the oak avenue mentioned below sub h. The wood also extends over the two islands in the large body of water.

f. The northeastern, southeastern and northwestern edges of the round pasture are formed in layout by COPPICE STRIPS, which are contained between the ditch and watercourse (IX. sub d and e) and are bounded on the northwest by the oak avenue mentioned below sub j.

They contain the round walk mentioned under XI. sub i.

g. The northwestern boundary of the space mentioned under VIII. sub a is formed by an AVENUE, planted in layout with beeches (Fagus sylvatica) and by a background COPPICE WOOD that extends to the oak avenue mentioned below sub j.

h. The southwestern and northwestern boundary respectively of the spaces mentioned under VIII. sub a and b is formed by an AVENUE of three rows of oaks (Quercus robur) planted in triangular formation in layout.

i. The southern boundary of the spaces mentioned under VIII. sub a and b is formed in layout by a COPPICE STRIP extending along the Gooyerdijk, which also runs along the coppice wood mentioned sub g and which is reinforced in the sharp angles with the also mentioned sub g avenues by small COPPICE SECTIONS. The southeastern boundary of the space mentioned under VIII. sub b is formed in layout by a COPPICE STRIP.

j. An AVENUE, planted in layout with two rows of oaks (Quercus robur), which branches off from the Langbroekerweg and subsequently in the extension of the straight section of the Broekhuizerlaan (see II.) according to a route belonging to the formal layout of the seventeenth/eighteenth century leads to the Gooyerdijk. This avenue also forms the boundary of the park on this side.

XI. The park contains the following paths and footpaths belonging to the historical layout:

a. In the wood mentioned under X. sub a. the DRIVEWAY belonging to the landscape-style layout, disused in the twentieth century, which branches off from the vista avenue (see I.) just before its end, crosses the wood in a gentle curve and at the transition between the deer park and the lawn (see III.a. and b.) terminates in the present, recent driveway (Note that this driveway is now unusable through overgrowth).

b. In the wood mentioned above sub a. likewise lies the presumably first used in the twentieth century DRIVEWAY which branches off from the straight section of the Broekhuizerlaan (see II.) and joins with the driveway mentioned sub a. Probably upon the laying out of the present driveway the last section of the aforementioned old driveway was planted with Weymouth pines (Pinus strobus).

c. The continuation of the driveways described above in the form of a LOOP, which through the wood mentioned under X. sub a. along the coach house leads to the main building and from there through the lawn returns to its starting point, as well as a BRANCH of this loop, which leads to the grounds behind the orangery and the kitchen garden/orchard (see IV.).

d. A PATH, which branches off from the vista avenue and at some distance from the eastern boundary of the park along the deer park leads to the loop-shaped continuation of the driveways mentioned sub c. and to the kitchen garden/orchard.

e. A LOOP OF PATHS starting from the Broekhuizerlaan around the brook-like, northern section of the large body of water (see IX.b.). These paths are accompanied in layout on both shores by avenue plantings of beeches (Fagus sylvatica), on the eastern shore in one row and on the western shore in two rows.

f. A PATH branching off to the east from the loop-shaped continuation of the driveways mentioned sub c., which divides itself in the rhododendron copse mentioned under III. sub b into a branch towards a passage in the wall mentioned under IV. along the kitchen garden/orchard and a branch, which leads past the orangery to the grounds beyond it.

g. A ROUND WALK around the large pond described under IX. sub b in the form of a path branching off on either side of the main building from the loop-shaped continuation of the driveways mentioned sub c., which follows the shores of said pond at varying distances. The path crosses the narrow ends of the pond to the north and southwest via wooden bridges (Note that the southern bridge is now relocated and the route of the path modified accordingly. Of the northern bridge the abutments remain).

h. A PAIR OF PATHS, branching off in the wood mentioned under X. sub b from the round walk mentioned sub g., which join to terminate in the path described under VI. The northern of these paths is accompanied in layout by a one-sided avenue planting of oaks (Quercus robur).

i. A ROUND WALK around the round pasture (see III.d.) in the form of a path that is flanked on both sides by the edge planting mentioned under X. sub f.; to the northeast the path connects with the round walk mentioned sub g. In the north corner the path forms part of a path triangle of which the two sides joining onto the present path join to terminate in the avenue mentioned under X. sub j. The path leads to the south of the vista between the pond space (see III.c.) and the round pasture over a so-called Zocherkam, a raised embankment, and is accompanied over that distance in layout by an avenue planting of oaks (Quercus robur) planted in triangular formation. The paths of the path triangle described above were accompanied in layout on both sides by rows of beeches (Fagus sylvatica) (Note that said beeches are now replaced by oaks (Quercus robur)).

An important part of the park moreover concerns the connection between the house and the funerary monument on the Donderberg. This connection was given form by means of a walk over a winding avenue planted with beeches, which is almost entirely preserved except for a small break at the Rijksstraatweg and leads up to beneath the monument, and by means of sightlines, which have partly become overgrown by undergrowth, but which remain very clearly recognisable in the field. From the Rijksstraatweg in the direction of the monument the winding avenue is paved with clinkers. The sightlines from the house and farmstead Schevickhoven towards the monument and vice versa are secured notarially in a servitude.

From the house the sightline leads over the grounds of Schevickhoven in the direction of Donderberg with the monument of Nellesteyn. The Bonnekaart from 1918 provides a good representation of this magnificent view over the terrain of Schevickhoven and the pasture to the north of the Middelweg in the direction of the monument. For this view, which is also represented on the Topographic and Military Map from 1847, the enclosure around the pasture surrounded by a wood margin to the north of the Middelweg was kept clear for a section, as remains observable to the present day. At the height of the boundary between Schevickhoven and Broekhuizen undergrowth now obstructs this sightline from the house over the mentioned pasture to the north of the Middelweg in the direction of the monument. From Schevickhoven this sightline over the pasture to the north of the Middelweg has been preserved in good condition. The green northwestern boundary of this pasture is determined by the winding avenue planted with beeches in the direction of the monument.

To the west of the Broekhuizerlaan lies the 'outer park', of which the winding oak avenue forms the most important link. This avenue, which was laid out in the early nineteenth century, originally led towards the Darthuizerberg, as the Topographic and Military Map from 1847 and the Bonnekaart from 1918 show. Now this nursery has been preserved to the nursery on the Bremweg and leads in a westerly direction a short distance in the direction of the avenue in the extension of the Traayweg, the western boundary of the historical park layout. The avenue section planted on either side with three double beech rows, which branches off from this walk and meets at right angles this avenue along the western boundary of the park layout, was presumably planted in the second half of the nineteenth century. This avenue section is not yet visible on the Topographic and Military Map from 1847 but is visible on the Bonnekaart from 1918. The pastures on either side of this avenue section are of subordinate importance for protection and are included in the protection because of their value as a green zone within the layout.

In the nineteen-nineties of the twentieth century the central park section around the house was restored. The surrounding park section is in a neglected state of maintenance.

Valuation

The GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the historical country estate Broekhuizen is of general importance:

- as a well-preserved and intact example of a park in mature landscape style;

- because of the quality of the design;

- for the oeuvre of landscape architects Michael and Zocher senior and junior;

- because of the partly preserved original tree stands;

- because of the visual-spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate.
