Inleiding

Description
Introduction
STUDIO 'VARA' until 1993 of the VARA, Association of Workers Radio Amateurs, founded on 1 November 1925. On 2 March 1929 the villa Heuvellaan 33 was taken into use as a studio. The studio block was created in four phases. The first phase (1929-1932) was designed by A. Eibink and J.A. Snellebrand and concerned the volume of one storey under a double-pitched mansard roof and the tower. The second phase (1952-1959) was designed by B. Merkelbach and P.J. Elling and concerned the hall and technical wing. The third phase (1959-1962) was designed by P.J. Elling and concerned the studio wing, placed at right angles to the technical wing. The fourth phase (1964-1969) was designed by the Elling office and concerned a volume on the south side and the large fan-shaped studio on the east side. In 1993, music halls were added to the south side according to the design of C. Weeber, whereby part of the third and fourth phases were replaced. The studio complex is prominently situated on a site sloping towards the northwest and enclosed by Heuvellaan on the north side, Jacobus Pennweg on the west side and Steynlaan on the south side, in the villa district de Trompenberg.
Description
Studio block, composed of various building volumes, oriented both north-south and east-west, with different floor plans and heights under their own roof covering.
On the north side is the old radio studio in a volume of one storey on a rectangular floor plan under a high double-pitched mansard roof with the ridge line parallel to the road, covered with grey curved tiles. Five grille windows are placed in the north facade. The high gable is accentuated by radially mounted aluminium plates, following the roof shape. The volumes from phase four adjoin on the east side. Against the west facade stands the predominantly blind, narrow volume, oriented north-south, from which the tower with chimney and flagstaff rises on the south side, built in beige glazed brickwork. The open iron stairs and concrete landing platforms with tube railings are located on the east side. A semi-circular glazed draught porch at the height of the roof of the narrow volume, a concrete round disc above the largest and projecting landing.
The horizontally finished hall on a rectangular floor plan has a glazed north facade with square panes. The platform for the slightly protruding entrance section is accessible via a staircase from Heuvellaan.
The technical wing, also situated parallel to the road and built in beige glazed brickwork on a rectangular floor plan, contains a basement and three storeys under a flat roof. At regular intervals windows are placed on each storey. A blocky protrusion in the middle of the facade on the right side contains a tile tableau by B. van der Leck in the primary colours on a white background, depicting a man, a rooster (in the middle) and a woman; a violin and a trumpet (below). The glazed staircase with blind west wall is placed against the west facade. The sculpture group in front of the technical wing by O. Jespers consists of a male and a female figure standing separately from each other and in their posture creating a connection between the task of the VARA in its early days and the work that had to be carried out.
At right angles to the technical wing stands the studio wing with open west facade (traffic area) with panes and blue panels at the height of the floor separations in a rectangular grid. Slightly angled towards the northeast, a predominantly closed studio space adjoins this in glazed brickwork.
On the south side, between the music halls, is located the south facade of phase four consisting of three storeys above which a terrace, predominantly of glass with balcony at the height of the floor, also accessible from the south side.
The large fan-shaped studio, with the arc on the east side, has facades finished with aluminium plates on a base of basalt lava plates. The facade is perforated on the east side by seven windows. The glass in the transition sections in the northeast corner is alternated by pilasters with red glazed tiles.
The interior of the studio complex is almost entirely preserved, such as the tile floors (dark and light grey, white, yellow), the stairs and iron balusters with plastic railings, the doors, particularly in the technical wing, the interior of the studios including also the old radio studio, with elements such as the acoustic provisions. A steel and glass sculpture by J. van de Broek and a rhythmic sculpture by A. Volten are located in the original hall. Essential in the designs were the windows so that contact with the exterior space remained.
Valuation
The former 'VARA' studio with interior components is of general importance due to its architectural and cultural-historical value as a well-preserved example of a studio complex created in phases from the first half of the twentieth century and as a component in the development of Hilversum as a broadcasting centre, prominently situated in the villa district de Trompenberg. Furthermore, the studio complex with interior components is historically-functionally important due to the insight into the development of studio construction.
