Inleiding
ZITBANK, in 1932 ontworpen door H.A. van Anrooij, in opdracht van de International Order of Good Templars ter nagedachtenis van prof. dr. J. van Rees (1854-1928). Van Rees vestigde zich in 1891 in Hilversum als arts, en heeft een actieve rol gespeeld in de strijd tegen het gebruik van alcohol en tabak, vóór de vrije ontwikkeling van het individu en vóór het vegetarisme. In 1897 was hij mede-oprichter van de Algemeene Nederlandsche Geheelonthoudersbond. In 1899 richtte hij in Blaricum de Tolstoiaanse Kolonie der Internationale Broederschap op. In 1931 werd voor Van Rees een rode kastanje geplant in het plantsoen op de hoek van de Hoge Naarderweg en de Godelindeweg/Insulindelaan op verzoek van de Hilversumse afdeling van de bond. Op 8 juli 1933 werd de daarbij geplaatste bank onthuld. De plek bevindt zich in de nabijheid van de adressen waar Van Rees in Hilversum heeft gewoond.
Omschrijving
De zitbank is opgetrokken op een betonnen funderingsplaat waarop in klinkers een kern is gemetseld welke het 7000 kg. zware Donaugraniet draagt. Het in zicht blijvende gedeelte is bekleed met paarse Siegersdorfer bau-keramiek. De zitbank bestaat uit drie, vrij van het graniet dragende gesmede, gebogen ijzeren strippen waarop geprofileerde blank gelakte Djattihouten ribben zijn aangebracht. Het portret van Van Rees is in het graniet gehouwen, met daaronder de tekst: "Prof. dr. J. Van Rees". In een gepolijst gedeelte van de keerzijde is een in memoriam ingehakt "In memoriam den oud-voorzitter der I.O.G.T. 16-04-1854 - 4-1-1928 aan de gemeente Hilversum overgedragen. Achter de zitbank een bloembak, gedekt met zwart verglaasde Siegersdorfer gevel-deksteen. De bak behoort gevuld te zijn met blauwe bloemen, de kleur van de geheelonthouders. Voor de beeltenis is een klein, halfcirkelvormig waterbekken in graniet uitgehouwen. Het water loopt vanuit een bronzen spuwer in een wijder, met rivierkeitjes bestraat bassin. Rondom het overige gedeelte van de bank is een perron van gemetselde paarse flagstones aangebracht.
Waardering
De Van Reesbank is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde, alsmede sociaalhistorische waarde als gaaf bewaard gebleven zitbank, geplaatst ter nagedachtenis van prof. dr. J. van Rees (1854-1928).

SEATING BENCH, designed in 1932 by H.A. van Anrooij, commissioned by the International Order of Good Templars in memory of prof. dr. J. van Rees (1854-1928). Van Rees settled in Hilversum in 1891 as a physician, and played an active role in the struggle against the use of alcohol and tobacco, for the free development of the individual and for vegetarianism. In 1897 he was co-founder of the General Dutch Abstinence League. In 1899 he founded in Blaricum the Tolstoian Colony of the International Brotherhood. In 1931 a red oak was planted for Van Rees in the green at the corner of the Hoge Naarderweg and the Godelindeweg/Insulindelaan at the request of the Hilversum chapter of the league. On 8 July 1933 the bench placed there was unveiled. The location is in the vicinity of the addresses where Van Rees lived in Hilversum.
Description
The seating bench is erected on a concrete foundation slab on which in clinkers a core is laid which supports the 7000 kg. heavy Danube granite. The visible part is clad with purple Siegersdorfer bau-ceramic. The seating bench consists of three, freely supported by the granite, curved iron strips on which profiled blank-varnished Djatti wood ribs are attached. The portrait of Van Rees is carved into the granite, with beneath it the text: "Prof. dr. J. Van Rees". In a polished part of the reverse side an inscription in memoriam is cut "In memory of the former chairman of the I.O.G.T. 16-04-1854 - 4-1-1928 transferred to the municipality of Hilversum. Behind the seating bench a flower box, covered with black glazed Siegersdorfer cornice brick. The box is to be filled with blue flowers, the colour of the abstainers. In front of the portrait a small, semicircular water basin is carved out in granite. The water flows from a bronze water spout into a wider basin paved with river pebbles. Around the remainder of the bench is a platform of laid purple flagstones.
Valuation
The Van Rees bench is of general importance on account of its architectural and cultural-historical value, as well as social-historical value as a well-preserved seating bench, placed in memory of prof. dr. J. van Rees (1854-1928).
