Inleiding
Voormalige TUINMANSWONING, gebouwd in 1902 in Chalet-stijl naar het ontwerp van E. Verschuyl in opdracht van G. van Mesdag als onderdeel van het landgoed "Quatre Bras" en gesitueerd op de hoek van de Beethovenlaan en de Bussumergrintweg.
Omschrijving
De tuinmanswoning is opgetrokken in rabatdelen uit Noors grenenhout op gepleisterde plint en op een vrijwel rechthoekige plattegrond met een oorspronkelijk open aanbouw aan de zuidwest- en noordwestzijde. De gevels worden geleed door houten stijlen en regels. De woning bevat een begane grond en een zolderverdieping onder ver overstekend zadeldak met de noklijn evenwijdig aan de weg, bedekt met rode tuiles du Nord. De topgevels aan de zuidoost- en noordoostzijde hebben een wolfseind, bekroond door een piron. De bovenlichten van vensters en deuren hebben een roedenverdeling.
De voorgevel (ZO) bevat een rechts uit het midden geplaatste risaliet. Op de begane grond bevindt zich een schuifvenster. Het venster op de zolderverdieping wordt omgeven door houten delen. De toegangsdeur bevindt zich links van de risaliet. Links van de deur en rechts van de risaliet is een venster geplaatst. Boven de deur en de vensters op de begane grond is een figuratieve voorstelling in hoogreliëf op houten paneel aangebracht. Van links naar rechts wordt uitgebeeld: sproeien, oogsten, zaaien en harken.
De linker zijgevel (ZW) bevat de oorspronkelijk open wasplaats. Het lessenaarsdak reikt tot iets onder de aanzet van het zadeldak. In het gevelvlak daarboven bevindt zich een venster.
De rechter zijgevel (NO) bevat op de begane grond en de zolderverdieping een venster. Het zoldervenster wordt omgeven door houten delen.
De achtergevel (NW) bevat aan de linkerzijde de aanbouw. Het venster aan de rechterzijde is samengesteld uit twee enkele en een dubbel raam. Via twee treden is de deur van de aanbouw aan de zuidwestzijde bereikbaar. In het dakvlak bevinden zich drie grote dakkapellen onder zadeldaken.

De voormalige tuinmanswoning is van algemeen belang wegens architectuur- en cultuurhistorische, alsmede typologische waarde als gaaf bewaard gebleven voorbeeld van een houten tuinmanswoning in Chalet-stijl uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw, behorende tot een voormalig landgoed en gesitueerd in het noordwestelijke villagebied van Hilversum.

Description
The gardener's cottage is constructed in rabbet joints from Norwegian pine wood on a plastered plinth and on a virtually rectangular floor plan with an originally open extension on the southwest and northwest side. The facades are articulated by wooden posts and rails. The dwelling contains a ground floor and an attic storey under a far-projecting gabled roof with the ridge line parallel to the road, covered with red tuiles du Nord. The gable ends on the southeast and northeast side have a half-hipped roof, crowned by a cresting. The fanlights of windows and doors have glazing bars.
The front facade (SE) contains a risalit placed off-centre to the right. On the ground floor there is a sash window. The window on the attic storey is surrounded by wooden elements. The entrance door is situated to the left of the risalit. To the left of the door and to the right of the risalit a window is placed. Above the door and the windows on the ground floor a figurative representation in high relief on wooden panel is applied. From left to right the following is depicted: watering, harvesting, sowing and raking.
The left side facade (SW) contains the originally open wash place. The sloping roof extends to just below the base of the gabled roof. In the facade plane above it there is a window.
The right side facade (NE) contains on the ground floor and the attic storey a window. The attic window is surrounded by wooden elements.
The rear facade (NW) contains the extension on the left side. The window on the right side is composed of two single and one double frame. Via two steps the door of the extension on the southwest side is accessible. In the roof plane there are three large roof dormers under gabled roofs.
Appreciation
The former gardener's cottage is of general importance on account of its architectural and cultural historical, as well as typological value as a well-preserved example of a wooden gardener's cottage in Chalet style from the early twentieth century, belonging to a former estate and situated in the northwestern villa area of Hilversum.
