Inleiding

Introduction

WATER TOWER with associated BOUNDARY FENCE, built in Neo-Romanesque style in 1893 on commission of the N.V. Utrechtse Waterleiding Maatschappij according to the design of the Compagnie Generale des Conduites d'Eau in Liège. The high-level reservoir was constructed by the firm F.A. Neuman in Eschweiler. The 24.5 m high water tower is situated at the corner of the Jac. Pennweg and the Godelindeweg at the highest point of the Trompenberg, which allowed this tower to remain relatively low in comparison with other water towers. Originally the tower was topped by an octagonal tent roof. The boundary fence with entrance gate stands along the road.

Description

The water tower has a cylindrical tower shaft built up in purplish-red brick with details such as voussoirs, corbels and bands in natural stone. Inside the tower a steel skeleton was constructed on which the high-level reservoir rests. The tower shaft consists of three sections. The facade openings are filled in with masonry.

The lower section contains a high plinth with band and setback and is topped by corniced bands between which the masonry is laid in herringbone pattern. The double panel door with semicircular fanlight is closed by a semicircular arch with corbels and voussoir. The fanlight and two panels are provided with ornamental ironwork. A number of six semicircular windows with voussoirs are set in the plinth.

The middle section of the tower shaft is articulated by twelve brick pilasters with natural stone speckled bands, base and capital above which semicircular arches with voussoirs are laid. The wall surfaces between the pilasters recede slightly. In six of these spare fields alternately long, narrow windows with voussoirs are set. The upper slightly projecting section of the tower shaft contains various brick mouldings with diamond- and circular-shaped recessed decorations, between which 48 small pilasters with semicircular arches are present, which are likewise terminated by capitals and voussoirs. Between the circles ornamental wrought-iron wall anchors are set. Above this is a semicircular frieze.

The steel structure within the tower shaft, consisting of twelve tapered columns with cross bracing, forms the structural base for the high-level reservoir.

The cylindrical high-level reservoir is composed of metal parts according to the Intze I type, with a bottom featuring a conical rise and a spherical central section. The high-level reservoir has a diameter of 10 m and a capacity of 600 m3. In the tower a staircase along the shaft connects the ground floor with the spillage floor.

The boundary fence consisting of a spile fence with double entrance gate in front of the entrance door is made of wrought iron. Between the uprights, alternately larger ones with hook-shaped cresting and smaller ones with flat cresting, run two rails above the middle, between which the decorative termination of always five spiles with alternately hook-shaped and flat cresting.

Valuation

The water tower with associated boundary fence is of general interest by virtue of its cultural-historical and architectural, as well as typological value as a rare and well-preserved example of a water tower in Neo-Romanesque style from the last quarter of the nineteenth century with a straight-sided cylindrical tower shaft and a steel structure on which an Intze high-level reservoir rests, and as an element from the history of drinking water supply, situated at the highest point of the Trompenberg in the northwestern villa district.
