Inleiding

KANTOORGEBOUW van het 'Dagblad de Gooi en Eemlander', gebouwd in 1928 in de stijl van de Amsterdamse School naar het ontwerp van J. van Laren, in opdracht van de directeur van de N.V. 'De Gooi en Eemlander', H.G. van der Wijk. De gekleurde glas-in-loodramen zijn vervaardigd door Winkelman te Amsterdam (J. van Staveren). Het pand is gesitueerd aan de oostzijde van de Groest in het centrum van Hilversum.

Omschrijving

Kantoorgebouw, opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond in drie bouwlagen en een tussenverdieping en horizontaal afgesloten. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in klinkers.

De iets schuin lopende voorgevel (W) bevat op de begane grond schuifdeuren die de oorspronkelijke tourniquet hebben vervangen, bereikbaar via drie natuurstenen treden. De deur- en vensterkozijnen van de vensters die de ingang flankeren, zijn van natuursteen. Links en rechts een venster met gekleurd glas-in-loodraam met voorstellingen uit het drukproces (links loodzetmachine, rechts drukpers). De gemetselde hoeklisenen bevatten een natuurstenen brievenbus boven de plint en worden afgesloten door een natuurstenen blok op ongeveer tweederde van de gevel. Boven de ingang bevindt zich tussen de lisenen een natuurstenen latei, voorzien van zes beeldhouwwerkjes. Daarboven bevatten drie vensters gekleurde glas-in-loodramen met voorstellingen uit het drukproces (matrijsenmachine, de uitvinder van de drukkunst L.J. Koster? en loodsmelterij). De drie vensters op de verdieping bevatten oorspronkelijk eveneens gekleurde glas-in-loodramen. De vensterbanken en lateien zijn van natuursteen, de ellipsvormige pilasters op de muurdammen worden afgesloten door een natuurstenen blok. Op het bovenste gedeelte van de gevel zijn met bladgoud afgewerkte letters aangebracht: 'Dagblad de Gooi en Eemlander'. De gevelrand is uitgevoerd in siermetselwerk en heeft een keramische afdekking. Aan de linkerzijde staat nog een vlaggestok in decoratieve smeedijzeren houders.

De linker zijgevel (N) grenst aan Groest 19/Leeuwenstraat 57.

De rechter zijgevel (Z) bevat een vierdelig venster.

De achtergevel (O) bevat op elk van de drie bouwlagen en de tussenverdieping een driedelig venster. Het trappenhuis aan de rechterzijde wordt verlicht door vensters op de tweede en derde laag.

Het oorspronkelijke interieur omvat onder meer het trappenhuis met gesneden trapbalustrade met pijler die wordt bekroond door gesneden beeldhouwwerk (steenbok met vrouw), houten deuren en deurkozijnen. Op de begane grond de balie met marmeren blad op houten onderstel waarin aan de achterzijde kasten, en met ijzeren baliehekken met drie openingen (advertenties, kleine advertenties/losse nummers en advertenties, terwijl de vierde (abonnementen) later is toegevoegd. De ruimte achter de balie, waar zich een leesplank en kalender bevinden, is bereikbaar via een ijzeren deur, bekroond door een ijzeren haan. In de hal de ombouw van de tourniquet, tegen de noordwand een houten bank waarboven een natuurstenen plaquette met de wapens van de gemeenten waar het dagblad de Gooi en Eemlander verschijnt en de tekst: '1928/de Gooi en Eemlander werd/in 1870 opgericht als weekblad door Johannes Geradts en verschijnt sinds 1922 als/dagblad onder leiding van/H.G. van der Wijk directeur en/A. Klene. cossa pres. coms-'. Tegen de zuidwand een leesmeubel waar(links)boven een natuurstenen plaquette met man met trompet op paard en de tekst: 'salus populi/suprema lex/de Gooi en Eemlander 1871-1946'.

Introduction

OFFICE BUILDING of the 'Dagblad de Gooi en Eemlander', built in 1928 in the style of the Amsterdam School to the design of J. van Laren, commissioned by the director of N.V. 'De Gooi en Eemlander', H.G. van der Wijk. The coloured stained-glass windows were made by Winkelman in Amsterdam (J. van Staveren). The building is situated on the east side of the Groest in the centre of Hilversum.

Description

Office building, erected on a rectangular floor plan in three storeys and an intermediate storey and closed off horizontally. The elevations are built of bricks.

The slightly sloping front elevation (W) contains on the ground floor sliding doors which have replaced the original revolving door, accessible via three natural stone steps. The door and window frames of the windows which flank the entrance are of natural stone. On the left and right a window with coloured stained-glass window depicting scenes from the printing process (left typesetting machine, right printing press). The brick corner pilasters contain a natural stone mailbox above the plinth and are closed off by a natural stone block at approximately two-thirds of the elevation. Above the entrance is situated between the pilasters a natural stone lintel, furnished with six sculptural works. Above this three windows contain coloured stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the printing process (matrix machine, the inventor of the printing art L.J. Koster? and lead smeltery). The three windows on the storey originally also contained coloured stained-glass windows. The window sills and lintels are of natural stone, the elliptical pilasters on the wall piers are closed off by a natural stone block. On the upper part of the elevation letters treated with gold leaf are applied: 'Dagblad de Gooi en Eemlander'. The facade edge is executed in decorative brickwork and has ceramic capping. On the left side still stands a flagpole in decorative wrought-iron holders.

The left side elevation (N) borders Groest 19/Leeuwenstraat 57.

The right side elevation (S) contains a four-part window.

The rear elevation (E) contains on each of the three storeys and the intermediate storey a three-part window. The staircase on the right side is lit by windows on the second and third storeys.

The original interior includes among other things the staircase with carved stair balustrade with pier which is crowned by carved sculptural work (chamois with woman), wooden doors and door frames. On the ground floor the counter with marble top on wooden base in which at the rear are cupboards, and with iron counter railings with three openings (advertisements, small advertisements/loose issues and advertisements, while the fourth (subscriptions) was added later. The space behind the counter, where there is a reading desk and calendar, is accessible via an iron door, crowned by an iron rooster. In the hall the reconstruction of the revolving door, against the north wall a wooden bench above which a natural stone plaquette with the coats of arms of the municipalities where the daily newspaper de Gooi en Eemlander appears and the text: '1928/de Gooi en Eemlander werd/in 1870 opgericht als weekblad door Johannes Geradts en verschijnt sinds 1922 als/dagblad onder leiding van/H.G. van der Wijk directeur en/A. Klene. cossa pres. coms-'.
