Inleiding

Introduction

The TERRACED HOUSES at Kerkplein 1-3 in Sint Odiliënberg were built in nineteenth-century traditional style in the period 1850-1855. The properties were designed by Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers.

Kerkplein 1 served as a chaplaincy until around 1960.

Kerkplein 3 functioned as a municipal office and veldwachter's residence until around 1930 - in 1939 a new town hall, designed by J. Franssen, was opened at the nearby Raadhuisplein. At this latter property, a fire engine house for the local fire brigade and holding cells were also installed. These are excluded from protection as their integrity has been compromised by alterations.

Both houses are located at Kerkplein in Sint Odiliënberg, which has traditionally served a central function. At the said square are located a rectory, a former school which now serves a museum function, a basilica, a monastery, a notary's house, various cafés and shops as well as the former town hall.

Description

The terraced properties at Kerkplein 1-3 have a rectangular ground plan, with two extensions at the rear facade. The properties are built of brick in chain bonding in two storeys. Kerkplein 1 features tooth-pointing in front and side facades, Kerkplein 3 only in the front facade. The properties are covered with a mansard roof, tiled with Spanish tiles. Beneath the roof is decorative brickwork which in some places runs vertically across the facade. Both properties have a plastered plinth.

In the facades of the residences are segment-arched openings for doors and windows in the first storey, while all facade openings in the second storey are round-arched. The facade openings are emphasized by decorative bands of brickwork. The windows of Kerkplein 1 have wooden frames with glazing bars and articulated fanlights. The frames of the windows of Kerkplein 3 are of plastic. With the exception of the fanlights, the glazing bars have been retained.

All windows in the front and side facades have stone sills. The sills of the windows in the rear facade are of brick. The entrance to the properties is a double wooden door with wrought-iron inlay and articulated fanlight. Next to each door, which is accessible by means of three steps, is a lancet-arched window on both sides.

The FACADES have a symmetrical composition. In the FRONT FACADE the central section projects forward and terminates in a stepped gable. At the top of the stepped gable is a decorative stone: a quatrefoil - a motif in Gothic tracery. The projecting central section is divided into two planes by three pilaster strips. In each of these facade planes is the entrance. In the top of the stepped gable we find for each property a lancet-shaped window.

To the left and right of the projecting central section each property has a rectangular volume with a window.

The SIDE FACADES of both properties were thoroughly restored in the second storey after the Second World War. In the SIDE FACADE of Kerkplein 1 there are two windows in both the first and second storey. In this facade plane also decorative brickwork. In the REAR FACADE there are two windows in the first storey. Beneath the roof edge decorative brickwork has been added. In the roof a dormer window and a roof light have been added. Behind the extension is the wooden door with articulated fanlight.

The SIDE FACADE of Kerkplein 3 has only two windows in the second storey. Moreover, the decorative brickwork is absent in this side facade. The REAR FACADE is identical to Kerkplein 1, with the exception of the plastic frames and whereas the roof contains two roof lights.

The structure of the INTERIOR of Kerkplein 1 is still very recognizable. Notable interior components include amongst others the marble floors in the hall and kitchen, the authentic wooden staircase, the barrel vaults in the cellars and the authentic doors and door posts.

The structure of the INTERIOR of Kerkplein 3 is still largely recognizable.

Valuation

The architectural-historical values of Kerkplein 1-3 are determined by the exceptional importance of the properties for the history of architecture and indeed as early examples within the oeuvre of Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers. The properties have considerable aesthetic qualities through the balanced composition of the facades and the present ornamentation. The objects possess cultural-historical values as a particular expression of a nineteenth-century development to achieve combined housing of administration, law enforcement (veldwachter) and pastoral care (clergy) in small communities. The ensemble values are determined by the situation, the centered location at Kerkplein. The properties are typologically rare. The properties are of general importance on account of the architectural-historical and cultural-historical values, the ensemble values and the integrity.
