Inleiding

Introduction

The CLOISTER MANSION (former parsonage) forms part of the complex Aan de Berg at Odiliënberg. The MANSION is situated on top of the church hill, accessible via the access road Aan De Berg. The object was built in nineteenth-century traditional style and contains elements of chalet style. The object is connected to the basilica and the southerly situated former cloister school via a cloister gallery.

As cloister mansion, Rector M.A.H.Willemsen places his parsonage from 1879 - situated on top of the church hill - at the disposal of the community. Rector Willemsen orders the construction of a new parsonage in 1889, located at Kerkplein 11.

Description

The MANSION has a rectangular floor plan in two storeys plus an attic storey with a gabled roof covered with slate tiles. It is supported by a wooden cornice with wooden consoles. The building has a brick facade with brickwork in English bond and has a projecting plinth with drip moulding. On the four corners under the roof there are always three natural stones which form a corner stone.

The facade openings are, unless otherwise indicated, segmental arch-shaped with rectangular wooden frames with glazing bars and articulated fanlights. The windows have above the frames infill panels with brickwork, finished with a course.

The FRONT FACADE has a symmetrical composition. The segmental arch-shaped entrance is centrally placed with a double rectangular wooden door with wrought-iron hinges and closing hardware.

Above the door is a canopy of natural stone and a round arch fanlight with a wrought-iron grille in front of it. The entrance is accessible via a flight of three natural stone steps and a natural stone threshold. The brick surround of the door rests on bases of natural stone. Above the entrance is a round arch window in the second storey. The central section of the front facade is crowned in the third storey by a dormer with gabled roof, articulated window and fanlight.

The hardstone roof cross has disappeared. In the first and second storeys there is on the left and right of the central section always one window. The projecting plinth contains two basement openings in the front facade.

The first storey of the RIGHT SIDE FACADE is concealed from view by the connection of the mansion to the basilica. In the second storey traces are visible of a demolished connection to basilica and school. The traces indicate a former chimney tower and gabled roof. Meanwhile the mansion is connected via a cloister gallery to the priory (former cloister school). In the second storey two windows and in the third storey a total of three windows. Two windows are rectangular, one window is segmental arch-shaped.

The LEFT SIDE FACADE is divided into two sections by an articulated chimney duct which opens in the second storey into a shallow bay-shaped projection with short gabled roof. Within it is a niche with a Saint Joseph image and a window. To the right of the chimney duct there is a veranda over two storeys with chalet influences. The materials used are decorative wood, articulated and coloured glass in rectangular wooden frames and brick. In the third storey there is a window. To the left of the chimney duct there is a window in each storey.

The REAR FACADE contains in the first storey three windows. In the second storey there are four windows, two of which date from circa 1965.

In the roof there is a dormer.

Valuation

The CLOISTER MANSION, Kerkplein 13, at Sint Odiliënberg possesses architectural-historical values because of the aesthetic qualities of the design of the mansion as former parsonage (1879-1888), through the particular use of materials and ornamentation as well as through the elements of chalet style. In cultural-historical respect the mansion is of importance as a particular expression of the spiritual development of the Roman Catholic church in Limburg, as an expression of the typological development of the parsonage as an exponent of the emancipation of denominational - primary - education in this case specially for girls.

The ensemble values are determined by the significance of the CLOISTER MANSION as an essential component of and situation within the complex Aan de Berg with the basilica, the O.L. Vrouwekapel, the cloister school and the parsonage at the foot of the church hill. The cloister mansion has been preserved in a high degree of integrity, also in relation to the visual and structural integrity of the surroundings.

The cloister mansion is of general interest because of the architectural-historical and cultural-historical values, the ensemble value and the integrity.
