Inleiding

Introduction

The former CLOISTER SCHOOL forms part of the complex Kerkberg at Sint Odiliënberg. The SCHOOL is situated at the foot of the church hill and has the address Aan De Berg 3. The object was built in nineteenth-century traditional style and contains elements of the neo-renaissance, such as a facade arrangement with horizontal bands and segmental arches with spandrels. The object is connected by means of a recent cloister passage with the CLOISTER MANSION.

In 1897 the cloister school is consecrated and education can commence in this new building. Already in 1905 the school is expanded with a block totalling 4 classrooms (including a gymnasium). This volume is placed in front of the existing construction. In concrete terms this means that the current front facade dates from 1905. Primary education for the girls of St. Odiliënberg is secularised from 1960 onwards and provided from a new building in the village itself. The Order must seek a new purpose for the complex. The name is changed to Priory Thabor and in the former school a centre for prayer and religious contemplation is established. The centre is renovated for the first time in 1961, whereby the attic is split into two storeys and divided into many bedrooms with roof windows. In 1969 and 1978 respectively, the Priory is expanded with a guest wing and a library on the south side of the complex. For this purpose the church hill is partially raised and the courtyard raised.

Description

The CLOISTER SCHOOL has a rectangular floor plan and three storeys under a hipped roof covered with bitumen shingles. The roof features various added roof dormers. Under the roof is decorative brickwork in a dog-tooth course. The building is constructed in red brick with brickwork in running bond and has a slightly projecting plinth, which is plastered only on the front facade. The facades furthermore feature yellow horizontal bands, yellow brick in the segmental arches and yellow brick under the roof edge.

The facade openings are, unless otherwise indicated, segmental arch-shaped. The windows contain rectangular wooden glazed frames with glazed fanlights. The sills and lintels are of stone. The facades are divided by means of horizontal yellow brick bands. The spandrels above the windows contain ceramic decorations. On the corners of the building are corner pilasters.

The FRONT FACADE has a symmetrical arrangement. The entrance is a double door half wood and half glazed glass. The fanlight is glazed. Above the door is a segmental arch-shaped spandrel in which a statue of Mary in a niche is located. This entrance and the window above are emphasized by two pilasters. To the left and right of this central section are in the first and second storey always three windows per storey. The projecting plinth to the right of the entrance contains three cellar openings. The roof contains 6 roof windows.

Under the roof is decorative brickwork in a dog-tooth course. On the roof are two wrought-iron ridge finials. In the first and second storey are always eight decorative wrought-iron wall anchors.

The RIGHT SIDE FACADE has three different facade planes in relation to the first expansion of the school in 1905. The side facade plane adjoining the front facade has only one window in the second storey, three wall anchors per storey and transitions by means of a pilaster into the second facade plane. In this are three windows per storey and two wall anchors. The third and final facade plane contains no facade openings but does have two wall anchors per storey.

On the REAR FACADE a staircase is placed in 1969 which forms the connection to an extension from the same year and an extension from 1978.

To the left of the staircase in the rear facade in both the first and second storey three windows and two wall anchors. In the roof two windows. The projecting plinth is cemented. To the right of the recent staircase in the rear facade two windows in the first and second storey. The windows in the first storey on the north-east side are only half visible due to the raised courtyard and accessible by means of grilles.

In the roof is a roof window.

The LEFT SIDE FACADE contains, viewed from the courtyard, respectively a blind facade with various wall anchors and in the roof various roof windows. Subsequently a facade plane divided by pilasters with a rectangular wooden window in the first storey with above it in the second storey a rectangular wooden door with glazed fanlight which leads onto an iron walkway towards the basilica and cloister mansion as well as various roof windows and a roof dormer. The next facade plane has a window that is only half visible in the first storey and a window in the second storey. Subsequently a tower which is entirely fitted out for sanitary facilities.

This tower has in the second storey a rectangular door with an iron emergency stair, at the top two small windows with courses of brick and natural stone and a tower cap covered with bitumen shingles. With the tower the main building projects to the right. This last facade plane has in the tower section a small window in the second storey and in the facade plane after the tower two ornamental wall anchors in the first storey, a window and three ornamental wall anchors in the second storey as well as an iron emergency stair.

In the roof are a roof dormer and various roof windows.

The INTERIOR is structurally still intact. Various former classrooms are divided by partition walls to make them suitable for the new function of the building. Of particular value are among others the authentic doors and door posts, the ceiling in the corridor and the authentic staircase.
