Inleiding.
De WONINGEN voor militairen zijn gesitueerd in een gesloten bouwblok langs de Mayweg, de Hertogstraat en de Guldenvliesstraat. Dit bouwblok vormt de westelijke begrenzing van de laat negentiende-eeuwse uitbreidingswijk 't Zand. De onder de bescherming vallende woningen betreffen tweelaags woonhuizen, waarin BENEDENWONINGEN en BOVENWONINGEN, bestemd voor de huisvesting van militairen: op de begane grond woningen voor officieren, de bovenwoningen huisvestten gewone soldaten. De woningen werden gebouwd in 1900-1901, naar ontwerp van architect P. Th. Stornebrink. Zij vertonen stijlelementen van het eecclecticisme en de neorenaissance.
Omschrijving.
De afzonderlijke woningen hebben een globaal rechthoekige plattegrond en tellen twee bouwlagen onder een plat dak met voorschild, gedekt met kruispannen. Dakkapellen in het dakschild, deels vernieuwd. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in machinale baksteen. In de voorgevels een geleding door middel van over het gehele bouwblok doorlopende natuurstenen cordonlijsten en speklagen. Natuurstenen vensterdorpels. De gevels worden afgesloten door een houten gootlijst op klossen. De woningen hebben rechtgesloten vensteropeningen, waarin ramen met drieruits bovenlicht, op de begane grond onder een strek, boven de vensters op de eerste verdieping segmentvormige ontlastingsbogen met aanzet- en sluitstenen en gepleisterde boogvulling. Hierin decoratie met rankenmotief. Bij sommige woningen aan de Mayweg een middenrisaliet met opbouw onder plat dak. Hierin gepleisterde velden met de inscripties: "ANNO 1900, MILITAIRE" en "ANNO 1901, WONINGEN". In deze hoger opgetrokken middenrisalieten kleinere vensters met valramen. De ingangen naar de bovenwoningen zijn bij deze risalieten gelegen in een portaal. De ingangspartijen van de woningen bestaan uit paneeldeuren onder een tweeruits bovenlicht. De hoekpanden aan de Mayweg (Hertogstraat 22-24 en Guldenvliesstraat 25) hebben een afgeschuinde hoek en zijn voorzien van een driehoekig houten balkon, waarboven een houten, vierkante hoektoren onder een spits, gedekt met zink. Halverwege de Mayweg wordt de gevel afgesloten door een topgevel met een natuurstenen deklijst. Hierin een paraboolvormige muurnis. De achtergevels van de woningen zijn sober uitgevoerd, met rechtgesloten vensteropeningen onder strek of onder ontlastingsboog, met aanzet- en sluitstenen. De woningen hebben een uitbouw ter plaatse van de keuken. Op de hoek hiervan een smallere uitbouw voor de toiletten. Bij een groot aantal woonhuizen zijn later echter aanbouwen gesloopt/toegevoegd en vensteropeningen gewijzigd.
Inwendig hadden de woningen oorspronkelijk een gang over de gehele diepte van het pand, met hierachter de keukenuitbouw. Naast de gang drie kamers en suite met schuifdeur. Deze indeling is nog gehandhaafd bij de woning Mayweg 30. Bij het merendeel van de woningen is de dispositie echter gewijzigd.
Waardering.
Het blok met militaire woningen is van algemeen belang. Het object bezit cultuurhistorische waarde, als uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling: de woonhuizen vormen een bijzonder voorbeeld van militaire huisvesting. Voorts vormt het een goede illustratie van de eenvoudigere bebouwing aan de buitenranden van de wijk 't Zand, de eerst Bossche stadsuitbreiding, tot stand gekomen na de slechting van de vestingwerken in de negentiende eeuw. Het object bezit architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de toegepaste eclectische bouwstijl, met elementen van de neorenaissance. Verder is het object van architectuurhistorisch belang vanwege de plaats die het inneemt binnen het werk van architect P.Th. Stornebrink, die een belangrijke rol heeft gespeeld bij de architectonische invulling van 't Zand. The DWELLINGS for military personnel are situated in a closed building block along the Mayweg, the Hertogstraat and the Guldenvliesstraat. This building block forms the western boundary of the late nineteenth-century extension district 't Zand. The dwellings under protection are two-storey dwelling houses, comprising GROUND-FLOOR DWELLINGS and UPPER DWELLINGS, intended for the housing of military personnel: on the ground floor dwellings for officers, the upper dwellings housed ordinary soldiers. The dwellings were built in 1900-1901, designed by architect P. Th. Stornebrink. They display stylistic elements of eclecticism and neo-renaissance.
Description.
The individual dwellings have a roughly rectangular floor plan and comprise two storeys under a flat roof with front slope, covered with interlocking tiles. Roof dormers in the roof slope, partly renewed. The facades are built in machine-made brick. In the front facades a division by means of natural stone cornice lines and speckle courses running over the entire building block. Natural stone window sills. The facades are closed off by a wooden cornice on corbels. The dwellings have right-angled window openings, in which frames with three-light fanlight, on the ground floor under a lintel, above the windows on the first floor segmental relieving arches with imposts and voussoirs and plastered spandrel filling. In it decoration with acanthus motif. At some dwellings on the Mayweg a central risalit with construction under flat roof. In it plastered fields with the inscriptions: "ANNO 1900, MILITARY" and "ANNO 1901, DWELLINGS". In these higher-constructed central risalits smaller windows with drop sashes. The entrances to the upper dwellings are located at these risalits in a porch. The entrance sections of the dwellings consist of panel doors under a two-light fanlight. The corner buildings on the Mayweg (Hertogstraat 22-24 and Guldenvliesstraat 25) have a chamfered corner and are provided with a triangular wooden balcony, above which a wooden, square corner tower under a pitched roof, covered with zinc.
