Inleiding.
Het DUBBELE WOONHUIS in Expressionistische stijl is in 1926 gebouwd naar ontwerp van H. Damen. Het is gelegen langs de Koningsweg, de belangrijkste noord-zuidas in de wijk Het Zand.
Omschrijving.
Het tweelaags dubbele woonhuis onder plat dak is gebouwd op U-vormige plattegrond en bestaat uit twee ongelijke woningen. Een gedeelte van de open oksel aan de oostzijde is in later tijd bebouwd met een eenlaags uitbouw. Het pand heeft een betonnen casco met dito vloeren en buitenmuren van machinale baksteen. De hoge dakrand bestaat uit uitspringende gemetselde banden. Uitstekende balkons zijn aangebracht op de eerste verdieping van de west- en de zuidgevel. Een inspringend terras bevindt zich op de begane grond in de zuid-oosthoek. De middenrisaliet van de noordgevel kent een inspringende voordeur met flankerende vensters die worden omlijst door keramische tegels met knopreliëf. De rechthoekige vensters hebben een, twee, drie of vier glaspanelen, die bij Koningsweg 4 nog ladderramen bevatten. In de woning Diepenbrockstraat 10 zijn deze vermoedelijk in later tijd vervangen door enkele ramen. In de laatste woning worden glas-in-loodramen aangetroffen in de vensters van de achtergevel, de achterdeur en in de ramen van het trappenhuis. De oorspronkelijk inspringende vensterpartij bij het balkon in de westgevel is in later tijd in het gevelvlak geplaatst. Het van oorsprong open balkon in de zuidgevel is in later tijd uitgebouwd. In de westgevel is een gevelsteen aangebracht, behorende bij de woning Koningsweg 4 en voorstellende een ooievaar (die verwijst naar de het beroep als gynaecoloog van de hoofdbewoner) met het bijschrift "1926" en "DE KWINT" (verwijzend naar het aantal leden van het gezin). Beide woningen zijn deels onderkelderd. De indeling van beide woningen is in hooflijnen intact gebleven, evenals de trappenhuizen. In de woning Koningsweg 4 wordt nog een enkel oorspronkelijk stucplafond aangetroffen, een enkele vloer heeft nog de oorspronkelijke betegeling. Het dubbele woonhuis met tuinmuur is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als herenhuis uit het Interbellum met een vormgeving die afwijkt van de omringende huizen. Het heeft architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de harmonieuze vormgeving en is een goed voorbeeld van Expressionistische bouwstijl uit het Interbellum. Het is gaaf behouden en zeldzaam als voorbeeld van een dubbel woonhuis in Expressionistische bouwstijl.

The DOUBLE RESIDENCE in Expressionistic style was built in 1926 according to a design by H. Damen. It is situated along the Koningsweg, the principal north-south axis in the Het Zand district.
Description.
The two-storey double residence under flat roof is built on a U-shaped plan and consists of two unequal dwellings. Part of the open corner on the east side was built over at a later date with a single-storey extension. The building has a concrete frame with likewise floors and outer walls of machine-made brick. The high roof edge consists of projecting brick bands. Projecting balconies are provided on the first floor of the west and south facades. An inset terrace is located on the ground floor in the south-east corner. The central projection of the north facade has an inset front door with flanking windows which are framed by ceramic tiles with knob relief. The rectangular windows have one, two, three or four glass panes, which at Koningsweg 4 still contain ladder sashes. In the dwelling Diepenbrockstraat 10 these were presumably replaced at a later date with single sashes. In the latter dwelling leaded-light windows are found in the windows of the rear facade, the rear door and in the windows of the stairwell. The originally inset window section at the balcony in the west facade was placed in the plane of the facade at a later date. The originally open balcony in the south facade was built in at a later date. In the west facade a facade stone has been placed, belonging to the dwelling Koningsweg 4 and depicting a stork (which refers to the profession as gynaecologist of the principal resident) with the inscription "1926" and "DE KWINT" (referring to the number of members of the family). Both dwellings are partly basements. The layout of both dwellings has remained intact in broad outline, as have the staircases. In the dwelling Koningsweg 4 a few original stucco ceilings are still found, one floor still has the original tiling. On the upper floor the original wooden door frames and the wall panelling are present. The dwelling Diepenbrockstraat 10 retains the original kitchen fitment and three marble fireplaces.
The garden of the building is surrounded by a brick wall with wrought-iron railings.
Evaluation.
The double residence with garden wall is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a gentleman's house from the Interwar period with a design that differs from the surrounding houses. It has architectural-historical value due to its harmonious design and is a fine example of Expressionistic architectural style from the Interwar period. It is well-preserved and rare as an example of a double residence in Expressionistic architectural style.
