Inleiding.
Het blok met HOFJESWONINGEN vormt de zuidelijke afsluiting van het Sint Jacobshofje. De vier woningen hebben één centrale ingangspartij in het midden van het blok. De woningen werden omstreeks 1930 gebouwd, in een regionale variant van de Amsterdamse School stijl. Opdrachtgever was de Rooms-Katholieke parochie van Sint Jacob. De woningen hadden een gemeenschappelijke berging aan de oostelijke zijde van het blok en een gemeenschappelijk waslokaal met douches aan de westelijke zijde hiervan. In 1993 werden de woningen gerenoveerd: hierbij werd de inwendige dispositie van het blok ingrijpend gewijzigd.
Omschrijving.
Het blok met hofjeswoningen heeft een globaal rechthoekige plattegrond en telt twee bouwlagen onder een zadeldak, gedekt met verbeterde Hollandse pannen. Bakgoot op klossen. Schoorsteen boven de westelijke zijde van het dak. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in baksteen. In de voorgevel (noordgevel) aan het Sint Jacobshofje in het midden de ingangspartij, bestaande uit een houten paneeldeur met vierruits bovenlicht. Hierboven, ter hoogte van het trappenhuis een smal, hoog venster met kleine roedenverdeling, dat doorloopt in een dakkapel. De kamers zijn voorzien van rechtgesloten vensters met schuiframen, met een kleine roedenverdeling in het bovenlicht. De vensters op de begane grond hebben onderluiken.
Aan weerszijden van de ingangspartij twee kleine vierkante éénruits vensters met sieromlijsting in baksteen. Op de bovenverdieping, aan weerszijden van het trappenhuisvenster, twee kleine ronde vensters.
De achtergevel (zuidgevel) heeft ter hoogte van de slaapkamers nieuwe rechtgesloten vensters. Geheel links in de achtergevel een achteringang naar het voormalige waslokaal.
Inwendig zijn de hofjeswoningen geheel gemoderniseerd. Ook is de dispositie ingrijpend gewijzigd.
Waardering.
De hofjeswoningen aan het Sint Jacobshofje zijn van algemeen belang. De woningen bezitten cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische en geestelijke ontwikkeling: zij vormen een goed voorbeeld van volkswoningbouw, gefinancierd door een Rooms-Katholieke parochie. Voorts illustreren zij een typologische ontwikkeling: zij vormen een voorbeeld van gesloten bebouwing met woonhuizen rondom een gemeenschappelijke open ruimte, een karakteristieke vorm van volkswoningbouwcomplexen in de eerste helft van deze eeuw en een actualisering van het hofjesthema in een historische binnenstad. De woningen hebben architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de bijzondere, op de Amsterdamse School gebaseerde ornamentiek en vanwege het bijzondere materiaalgebruik. Introduction.
The block containing COURTYARD DWELLINGS forms the southern closure of the Sint Jacobshofje. The four dwellings have one central entrance section in the middle of the block. The dwellings were built around 1930, in a regional variant of the Amsterdam School style. The client was the Roman Catholic parish of Sint Jacob. The dwellings had a shared storage room on the eastern side of the block and a shared washroom with showers on the western side thereof. In 1993 the dwellings were renovated: during this work the internal layout of the block was substantially altered.
Description.
The block containing courtyard dwellings has a broadly rectangular floor plan and comprises two storeys under a gabled roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles. Box gutter on corbels. Chimney above the western side of the roof. The facades are constructed in brick. In the front facade (north facade) facing the Sint Jacobshofje in the middle is the entrance section, consisting of a wooden panelled door with four-pane fanlight. Above this, at the height of the stairwell a narrow, tall window with small glazing bars, which continues into a roof dormer. The rooms are furnished with rectangular windows with sash frames, with small glazing bars in the fanlight. The windows on the ground floor have lower shutters.
On either side of the entrance section two small square single-pane windows with ornamental brick framing. On the upper storey, on either side of the stairwell window, two small round windows.
The rear facade (south facade) has new rectangular windows at the height of the bedrooms. On the far left in the rear facade a rear entrance to the former washroom.
Internally the courtyard dwellings have been completely modernised. The layout has also been substantially altered.
Valuation.
The courtyard dwellings at Sint Jacobshofje are of general importance. The dwellings possess cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a socio-economic and spiritual development: they form a good example of working-class housing, financed by a Roman Catholic parish. Furthermore, they illustrate a typological development: they form an example of closed development with residences surrounding a shared open space, a characteristic form of working-class housing complexes in the first half of this century and an actualisation of the courtyard theme in a historic city centre. The dwellings have architectural-historical value because of the particular ornamentation based on the Amsterdam School and because of the particular use of materials. The courtyard dwellings possess ensemble value as an essential component of Sint Jacobshofje, which is of national cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance. The courtyard dwellings are finally of importance because of the integrity of the exterior.
