Inleiding

Introduction

CANTEEN at the N.V. Biscuit Factory 'Victoria', built in 1941 after a design by architect D. Roosenburg in the manner of Traditionalism. The canteen stands along the railway line in the nineteenth-century urban fabric of Dordrecht.

NB The interior has been largely altered, except for the staircase at the main entrance. The side facade along the Havenstraat has new windows of plastic.

Description

Canteen, constructed from a rectangular floor plan in red hard-grey hand-moulded brick over two storeys with an additional rendered basement storey on the north side. The building has a curved, overhanging roof consisting of a structure of hollow pumice concrete slabs on iron roof trusses. The facades are laid in ornamental bonding with diagonal courses of red glazed brick. The building has a parapet which is constructed from rows of very large and small bricks and is edged with a concrete band. The building has steel right-angled windows and doors in frames of shock concrete.

The main entrance is located in the gable end facing Hoge Bakstraat. Double doors are set in a simple concrete door surround. To the left of the entrance and on the upper storey three round steel windows with glazing bars and a concrete frame. All around laid courses of red glazed brick and at the bottom a concrete keystone. The right part of the front facade is rounded and projecting and covered with a separate, overhanging pointed roof. In the rounded section 4x4 square frames are set. The lower storey consists of wide windows. All with steel glazing bars. To the left of the front facade the brickwork is continued in a boundary wall of approximately half a metre in height which is topped with concrete coping stones.

In the left side facade an additional rendered basement storey with five arched porches each with two four-light steel windows with brick sills. On the upper storeys six-part window groupings.

The right side facade has centrally five window axes with on either side an almost blind facade section with on the left one round window frame and on the right four round window frames, with only steel glazing bars. The large rectangular windows are set in six-part concrete frames.

On the rear facade a concrete staircase with landing and the rear door. In the parapet two ventilation grilles. On ground floor level four tall windows and on the upper storey five tall windows, composed of two square windows each.

Important in the interior is, at the main entrance, a flight of stairs with an ornate wrought-iron stair balustrade.

-The building is intact in its main form and detailing.
