Inleiding

Introduction

Semi-circular ensemble of MANSIONS built in 1898, forming part of the De Rozenhof complex, situated to the east and north of Villa Rozenhof.

Description

The mansions numbered 2 to 20 are constructed in red brick over two storeys with a spacious attic storey beneath a truncated gabled roof. These dwellings are larger than buildings 22 to 38. Due to the placement of the houses in a curved gable wall, the main form of the ground plans varies from rectangular to trapezoidal. The houses have three window bays wide front facades with individual detailing of glazed brick, red, yellow or green facing brick, plasterwork or natural stone, varied gable tops (stepped or spout gables) and alternately placed balconies. The front doors are each mirrored and located entirely to the right or left. All window openings are right-angled and placed beneath cock's combs of coloured facing brick with plastered setting and closing stones. The buildings have a granite plinth and granite window sills incorporated in a cordon line. In the gable tops ornamental brickwork and plastered layers. The entrances have a wide panelled door with two windows with ornamental ironwork and a fanlight with leaded glass. Beside the entrance two sash windows, on the upper floor three sash windows. In the gable top a two-light window. The buildings all have a wooden balcony located alternately on the first or second floor. Buildings no. 6 and 12 have a wooden gable top with a pigeon loft. No. 4 and no. 16 are identical and mirror-identical to no. 10 and no. 20. No. 6 is mirror-identical to no. 12. No. 8 is identical to no. 14 and no. 18.

The mansions no. 22 to 38 form a gable wall of nine dwellings constructed in brick over three storeys. The dwellings are lower and narrower than the dwellings 2 to 20. The buildings have cornice-topped facades and stand beneath mansard roofs. The projecting roof cornices rest on wooden brackets. The middle building, no. 30, has a gabled roof with a stepped gable. The gable schemes are mirrored with respect to the middle building.

Everywhere granite plinths that run through to the sills of the ground floor windows. All window openings are placed beneath arched stretches with sandstone closing and setting stones and arch rings with ornamental brickwork.

No. 22 and 38 have a neck gable. On the upper floor three French balconies, in the gable top a sash window with two horizontal small windows on either side.

No. 32 and 36 have a plastered facade on the ground floor with false joints and a profiled cordon line.

The interiors are reasonably intact. Original elements such as marble corridor floors with marble plinths and thresholds, rooms-en-suite with sliding doors with leaded glass, stucco ceilings with lion-head ornaments and profile lines are virtually everywhere still intact.

Valuation

Ensemble of mansions dating from 1898 in Transitional style, forming part of the De Rozenhof complex, of general importance because of architectural and cultural-historical value as a characteristic example of early development projects and also of importance because of ensemble value with Villa Rozenhof, the associated rosarium and the adjoining Singel buildings.
